Boundary scattering and lattice thermal conductivity of semicrystalline polymer at low temperatures: Application to polyethylene

We theoretically investigate the lattice thermal conductivity of a hollow Si nanowire under the relaxation time approximation. The results show that the thermal conductivity in such structure is decreased markedly below the bulk value due to phonon confinement and boundary scattering. The thermal conductivities under different scattering mechanisms are given, and it is found that the boundary scattering is dominant resistive process for the decrease of the thermal conductivity.

An apparatus for measuring the thermal and electrical conductivities of solids at temperatures between 2° and 300°K. is described. Results are presented of measurements of some dilute copper alloys, beryllium, bismuth, and germanium. Where possible the lattice thermal conductivity has been deduced, directly or indirectly from the measurements, and its magnitude and variation with temperature are discussed with relation to theory.
