Public expenditures for research and development have increased very rapidly in the last two decades. Despite the apparent high payoff from this research, there is an increasingly greater reluctance on the part of legislative groups and the general public to support such research. This problem revolves around the question of social priorities, but it also involves an assessment of the value of the research investment.

The concept, history, and operation of the Derailment Investigation Service maintained by the Research and Development Division of the British Railways Board is discussed, together with the nature and sources of the body of technical and numerical data which has been established. The mechanisms and causes of derailment are also described and the relevance of vehicle condition, track geometry, operating circumstances, and vehicle dynamics discussed.
