A new type of nano-composite film was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol, Ni2+-montmorillonite (Ni2+-MMT), defoamer, a levelling agent and a plasticizer. Its thermal characteristics were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The intermolecular interactions were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (%E) were measured. The microstructures were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). FT-IR and XPS spectra indicated that cross-linking has taken place between PVA and Ni2+-MMT. XRD and AFM indicate that the PVA molecules had inserted themselves into the silicate layers of MMT, exfoliating them and dispersing them randomly into the PVA matrix. Compared to pure PVA film, the TS of the films was increased and %E decreased when the Ni2+-Montmorillonite was added and the dissolution temperature of the film was also reduced.

In this paper, two types of fiber surface treatment methods, namely heat treatment and chemical coupling, were used to improve the basalt fiber surface properties. The basalt fiber surface was heated under 250Celsius degree for 30minites, and then was treated by silane coupling agent ethanol solution with different concentrations. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was utilized to study the surface chemical compositions of basalt fiber after treatments. The XPS analysis indicated that chemical bonds between basalt fiber and KH-550 have occurred, and silanols were adsorbed to the surface of basalt fibers by an ether linkage between the silanols and the hydroxyl groups of the fibers. When the concentration of KH-550 is 0.8wt%, the optimal bonding condition is formed between basalt fiber and silane coupling agent.

Chemical interactions between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and triethanol amine titanate chelate were studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The titanate chelate cross coupled the PVA solution and produced a viscous gel. The gel had a three-dimensional network structure containing -CPVA-O-Ti-O-CPVA- organic complexes. A new C(ls) signature at 285.7 eV and an O(ls) signature at 531.25 eV were associated with the formation of these complexes. The water of the PVA solution was physically retained in the gelled structure and was readily available for chemical reactions. The removal of this entrapped water was irreversible and led to a collapsed film of Ti-cross-linked PVA.

In this paper, a novel conductive silver adhesive (ECA) for transducer is prepared to bond piezoelectric patch and the aluminum substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study the fracture elements in order to analyze bond mechanics, fracture morphology is observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result of test and analysis shows ECA with sliane coupling agent have both physical and chemical bonding and the fracture type is cohesive failure. However the ECA without sliane coupling agent only has physical bonding and fracture type is mixed failure.

This study shows that chitosan (CS) could be highly useful as a coupling agent in phosphate glass fibre/polycaprolactone (PGF/PCL) composites, as it improved the interfacial shear strength by up to 78%. PGFs of the composition 45P2O5–5B2O3–5Na2O–24CaO–10MgO–11Fe2O3 were dip-coated with CS (with a degree of deacetylation >80%) dissolved in acetic acid solution (2% v/v). Different CS concentrations (3–9 g L−1) and coating processes were investigated. Tensile and fragmentation tests were conducted to obtain the mechanical properties of the single fibres and interfacial properties of the PGF/PCL composites, respectively. It was observed that post-cleaning, the treated fibres had their tensile strength reduced by around 20%; however, the CS-coated fibres experienced strength increases of up to 1.1–11.5%. TGA and SEM analyses were used to confirm the presence of CS on the fibre surface. FTIR, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses further confirmed the presence of CS and indicated the protonation of CS amine groups. Moreover, the nitrogen spectrum of XPS demonstrated a minimum threshold of CS coating required to provide an improved interface.

The effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) stabilizers and gold nanoparticles supported on active carbon (AuNPs/AC) was investigated in this article. Polymers with different molecular weights and hydrolysis degrees have been synthesized and used, like the stabilizing agent of Au nano-catalysts obtained by the sol-immobilization method. The reduction of 4-nitrophenol with NaBH4 has been used as a model reaction to investigate the catalytic activity of synthesized Au/AC catalysts. In addition, we report several characterization techniques such as ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in order to correlate the properties of the polymer with the metal nanoparticle size and the catalytic activity. A volcano plot was observed linking the catalytic performance with hydrolysis degree and the maximum of the curve was identified at a value of 60%. The Au:PVA-60 weight ratio was changed in order to explain how the amount of the polymer can influence catalytic properties. The effect of nitroaromatic ring substituents on the catalytic mechanism was examined by the Hammett theory. Moreover, the reusability of the catalyst was investigated, with little to no decrease in activity observed over five catalytic cycles. Morphological and kinetic studies reported in this paper reveal the effect of the PVA polymeric stabilizer properties on the size and catalytic activity of supported gold nanoparticles.

ABSTRACTMetal deposition on a p-sexiphenyl (6P) film was studied by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), metastable atom electron spectroscopy (MAES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The deposited metals were Au, Mg, and several alkali metals (K, Na, Rb, and Cs). No chemical reaction between 6P and Au or Mg was observed in the measured spectra, while additional gap states appeared in the UPS and MAES spectra by deposition of the alkali metals. The diffusion of Au and Mg atoms into the 6P film was observed in the MAES spectra. We found the trend of the vacuum level shift is different between the systems of the 6P on the Au and its reversed systems (Au on the 6P film), suggesting the different formation of the interface depending on the deposition sequence.

AbstractA surface of PC, PMMA, and PET samples irradiated with Ar+ ion of 1 keV energy with and without oxygen environment was investigated by contact angle measurement and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra. Contact angle of water droplets on the irradiated surface of the polymers decreased and remained almost constant with increasing Ar+ irradiation without oxygen. However, when the polymers were irradiated under oxygen environment, the contact angle markedly decreased with increasing ion dose upto 1016 ions/cm2. XPS results show that, after Ar+ irradiation under oxygen, hydrophilic groups were developed on PC, PMMA, and PET. The peak ratio (O/C) of PET irradiated without oxygen decreased with increasing ion dose, whereas that of PET irradiated under oxygen increased with ion dose upto 1016 ions/cm2
