This study shows that chitosan (CS) could be highly useful as a coupling agent in phosphate glass fibre/polycaprolactone (PGF/PCL) composites, as it improved the interfacial shear strength by up to 78%. PGFs of the composition 45P2O5–5B2O3–5Na2O–24CaO–10MgO–11Fe2O3 were dip-coated with CS (with a degree of deacetylation >80%) dissolved in acetic acid solution (2% v/v). Different CS concentrations (3–9 g L−1) and coating processes were investigated. Tensile and fragmentation tests were conducted to obtain the mechanical properties of the single fibres and interfacial properties of the PGF/PCL composites, respectively. It was observed that post-cleaning, the treated fibres had their tensile strength reduced by around 20%; however, the CS-coated fibres experienced strength increases of up to 1.1–11.5%. TGA and SEM analyses were used to confirm the presence of CS on the fibre surface. FTIR, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses further confirmed the presence of CS and indicated the protonation of CS amine groups. Moreover, the nitrogen spectrum of XPS demonstrated a minimum threshold of CS coating required to provide an improved interface.

In this paper, two types of fiber surface treatment methods, namely heat treatment and chemical coupling, were used to improve the basalt fiber surface properties. The basalt fiber surface was heated under 250Celsius degree for 30minites, and then was treated by silane coupling agent ethanol solution with different concentrations. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was utilized to study the surface chemical compositions of basalt fiber after treatments. The XPS analysis indicated that chemical bonds between basalt fiber and KH-550 have occurred, and silanols were adsorbed to the surface of basalt fibers by an ether linkage between the silanols and the hydroxyl groups of the fibers. When the concentration of KH-550 is 0.8wt%, the optimal bonding condition is formed between basalt fiber and silane coupling agent.

A novel biosorbent was prepared by chemically grafting of polyethylenimine (PEI) onto the fungal biomass of Penicillium chrysogenum through a two-step reaction. The modified biosorbent is favorable for the removal of anionic Cr(VI) species from aqueous solution due to the protonation of amine groups on the biomass surface. The sorption capacity for Cr(VI) increased by 7.2-fold after surface modification. Sorption kinetics results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the experimental data well. During the sorption process, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to analyze the chromium species on the biosorbent surface and the results indicate that part of the Cr(VI) ions were reduced to Cr(III) ions which can be chelated with the amine groups on the biomass surface. The reduced Cr(III) ions formed some aggregates on the surface at higher solution pHs.

A novel ester derivative, dodecyl xanthate acetic dodecyl xanthate ester(DXAD) was synthesized and it’s tribological behaviors as additives in hydrogenated oil, were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Results show that the compound possesses good antiwear performance, extreme pressure capacity, and good friction-reducing property. The action mechanism was estimated through analysis of the worn surface with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of XPS and SEM analyses illustrate that the prepared compound as an additive in hydrogenated oil forms a protective film containing ferric sulfide and ferric sulfate compounds on the rubbed surface.

Novel ECPs (electronic conducting polymers) based on amino β-styryl-substituted terthiophene (AST) were synthetized by direct electropolymerization. The ECPs were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The poly(amino β-styryl terthiophene) displayed cyclic and square-wave voltammograms with redox peaks that can be assigned to the aminophenyl moiety and the polyterthiophene backbone. The presence of free primary amine groups on the ECP film permitted further biological functionalization (i.e., covalent bonding of various bioreceptors on its surface). The electrochemical performance of Biotin grafted at the AST modified glassy carbon electrode was investigated to detect the Avidin protein in solution by cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry.Key words: electronic conducting polymer, electrode surface modification, biosensor, β-styryl-substitued terthiophene, functionalization, cyclic, square-wave voltammetry.

In this study, a lead-resistant bacterium, Bacillus subtilis X3, was used to prepare a lead bioadsorbent for immobilization and removal of lead in lead solution. The lead shot precipitate was analysed by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorbed lead was mainly mineralized to form Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, Pb 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 and Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl; however, other mechanisms that can also promote the mineralization of lead should not be ignored. For example, Na + and Ca 2+ on the cell wall surface were exchanged with Pb 2+ in solution, which confirmed that the ion-exchange process occurred before mineralization. Moreover, adsorption bridging caused by extracellular polymeric substances also accelerated the further aggregation of lead, and the biomass was encapsulated by lead gradually. Hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl and amine groups were not observed in lead mineral crystals, but the complexation between lead and these groups still benefited the mineralization of lead. The valence of Pb(II) was not changed after mineralization, which indicated that the biosorption process was not a redox reaction. Finally, biosorption occurred on the outer surface of the cell, but its specific surface area was relatively small, limiting the amount and efficiency of biosorption.

Surface coating using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) has been applied to improve the electrochemical properties of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode materials. The APTES coating layer on the surface of NCM523 protects the direct contact area between the cathode material and the electrolyte, and facilitates the presence of electrons through the abundance of electron-rich amine groups, thereby improving electrochemical performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the existence of APTES coating layers on the surface of NCM523 cathode materials, revealing three peaks—N1s, O1s, and Si1s—that were not identified in bare NCM523. In addition, the discharge capacities of the bare electrode and the APTES-coated NCM523 electrode were 121.06 mAh/g and 156.43 mAh/g, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the use of an APTES coating on NCM523 cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries has never been reported.

In this paper, a novel conductive silver adhesive (ECA) for transducer is prepared to bond piezoelectric patch and the aluminum substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study the fracture elements in order to analyze bond mechanics, fracture morphology is observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result of test and analysis shows ECA with sliane coupling agent have both physical and chemical bonding and the fracture type is cohesive failure. However the ECA without sliane coupling agent only has physical bonding and fracture type is mixed failure.
