The presented article is dedicated to stress state development while assessing the concentration of stresses in samples with continuously changing notches. These samples represent connecting elements of structural parts. The stress states of selected samples were determined experimentally by means of reflection photoelasticity. This method is suitable mainly for determination of stress state in the whole area in question, predominantly though for the analysis of stress concentration and its gradient in the notched area. Within the method of reflection photoelasticity, a layer was used to analyse the stress field. When loaded, this layer exhibits the ability of temporal birefringence. One of the statistical methods was selected in order to predict the stress state of other samples with bigger notches.

Contemporary computer techniques of sound analysis provide high precise melody analysis and estimation of sound pitch row. Usually, before experimental investigation, the structure of analyzed pitch system is unknown. In order to estimate pitch row stages, statistical analysis of melody line will be applied. Stage positions correlate with local maximums of statistical distribution of sounding durations on different pitches. For such analysis, some parameters of estimation algorithm must be chosen. This problem will be solved by applying of methods of mathematical statistics with accor ding to humans resolution of hearing. All needed transformations will be fulfilled in authors program SPAX.

The article presents the results of field tests of an experimental seeder when sowing seeds of onion varieties “Bereketli” with a ribbon-dotted pattern. At the same time, the developed technological scheme and the principle of operation of the experimental machine are presented. The experimental machine is based on the SZS-2,1 seeder with a reel-to-reel sowing device. The experimental seeder is additionally equipped with Romanian-made "HRC" seed drills.Processing the results of experiments of mathematical statistics show that with an increase in the speed of the tractor movement, the coefficient of variation, the arithmetic mean and root-mean-square value increases.

On the basis of analyzing clinical data and data from past history of patients with postinsult neurologic dificiency, a conclusion has been made by correlation analysis and determination of connection closeness between separate clinical signs. The conclusion tells about nonhomogeneity of motor disorders genesis in patients with hemi-sphere insult, foundation of which different chains of pathophysiology process make up.

The paper presents some interesting aspects related to the biography and works of Romanian mathematician Caius Iacob (1912–1992). He was famous for his works in the fields of mathematical analysis, fluid mechanics, classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory. At the age of 19, he graduated from the Mathematics Faculty in Bucharest, and then he went to Paris to continue his studies at the Faculty of Sciences, where he worked on a PhD thesis under the advice of famous French mathematician Henri Villat. On 24 June 1935, Caius Iacob successfully presented to the Sorbonne committee his PhD thesis about “Determination of conjugated harmonic functions with some limit conditions, and their applications in hydrodynamics”. Returning to Romania, Caius Iacob had a long and successful career teaching mathematics and mechanics at the universities of Timişoara, Cluj and Bucharest. His most important work is considered the “Mathematical introduction to the mechanics of fluids”. This book, providing original ways to work with classical hydrodynamics and compressible-flow theory, was published in Romanian in 1952 and in French in 1959. In 1955, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Romanian Academy, becoming a titular Member in 1963. He was also President of the Mathematics Section of the Romanian Academy from 1980 until the end of his life, in 1992. In 1991, he initiated the foundation of the “Romanian Academy Institute of Applied Mathematics”. In 2001 the institute merged with the “Centre for Mathematical Statistics”, which had been created in 1964 by mathematician Gheorghe Mihoc, thus creating the “Gheorghe Mihoc – Caius Iacob Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics” of the Romanian Academy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach of quantitative assessment of academic value and demand of journals for a discipline. Design/methodology/approach This study defines relative citation rate (RCR) and utilization rate (UR) of journals cited by a discipline with a case of inorganic chemistry discipline in Jilin University, ranks the journals in decreasing order of RCR and UR, and analyzes the RCR and UR curves with mathematical statistics and physics. Findings The RCR and UR curves can be expressed as: RCR(n)=N1exp(−n/t(N1))+N2exp(−n/t(N2))=64.54exp(−n/1.98)+31.14exp(−n/23.11) and UR(n)=Y1exp(−n/t(Y1))+Y2exp(−n/t(Y2))=85.06exp(−n/108.6)+12.94exp(−n/705.8). The parameters t(N1), t(N2), t(Y1) and t(Y2) can be used to assess quantitatively academica value and demand of journal for a discipline and to determine core journals of the discipline. Research limitations/implications This approach is used to quantitatively assess academic value and demand of journals for a discipline. Practical implications This approach may provide useful information for journal management of library. Originality/value The present work is original.
