Abstract In this work, nanosilica and micro carbon black (CB) as a fillers were used to improve the properties of styrene butadiene rubber/natural rubber blends (SBR/NR) crosslinked by γ radiation. Nanosilica was prepared from silica sand and used as eco-friendly material. These composites were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the measurements of the physic-mechanical and thermal properties were measured. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that the composites reinforced by nanosilica and the measurements of the CB are uniformly dispersed in the blends matrix. The results showed that the physico-mechanical and thermal properties were improved indicating a good interaction between the fillers and rubber matrix. The volume fraction measurements confirmed the formation of crosslinking network structure. Meanwhile, the reinforcement of SBR/NR blend loaded with nanosilica showed improved mechanical than blend loaded with both the nanosilica/carbon black and the CB alone. The highest enhancement was obtained for the three fillers by using a concentration of 35 phr at a dose of 150 kGy of γ-irradiation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the thermal stability of SBR/NR blend reinforced by nanosilica is higher than those blends reinforced with combined filler the silica. It was also found that the irradiated SBR/NR nanocomposites were more stable than the un-irradiated ones.

Composites of polypropylene/Acylonitrile butadiene rubber/Rice husk powder/ (PP/NBRr/RHP) with and without trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) were prepared, and the effects of trans-polyoctylene rubber were investigated. By using rice husk powder of 150300μm, five different compositions of PP/NBRr/RHP composites (i.e.100/0, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and 40/60 phr) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180 °C and 50 rpm rotor speed. The results indicate that the incorporation of TOR improved the tensile properties of PP/NBRr/RHPcomposites. Scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surfaces proved that TOR promoted good adhesion between the PP-NBRr matrices and RHP.Keywords: Polypropylene; Trans-polyoctylene rubber; Rice husk powder; Acrylonitrile Butadiene rubber; composite

Purpose – This paper aims to express in detail the rheological, morphological and thermal properties of unpigmented and pigmented styrene-butadiene rubber composites with new prepared inorganic pigment based on kaolin covered with a thin layer of calcium and magnesium oxides or mixed oxide of both together. These new pigments combine the properties of both their constituents (kaolin and metal oxides), which are a new trend in inorganic pigments called core-shell pigments. The pigments used for comparison are kaolin (K), CaO/kaolin (CaO/K), MgO/kaolin (MgO/K) and CaO.MgO/kaolin (CaO.MgO/K). Design/methodology/approach – The different pigments were characterized using different analytical and spectrophotometric techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray and transmission electron microscopy, while rubber vulcanizates' rheological, morphological, swelling and thermal properties were examined using different standard and instrumental testing and methods. Findings – The study revealed that there is a significant effect of the new prepared pigments on SBR properties, where the optimum pigment loading was 40 phr for CaO/kaolin, while it was 2.5 phr for MgO/kaolin. Studying the effect of different ratios of oxides on kaolin (5, 10 and 20 per cent), different loadings of these pigments ranging between 2.5 and 40 phr were done for each pigment. These modified kaolin or core-shell metal oxide/kaolin pigments imparted new and improved reinforcing properties to SBR vulcanizates. Research limitations/implications – No research limitations were found. Practical implications – Core-shell MgO/kaolin pigments are eco-friendly and can replace other expensive pigments that are usually used as fillers in the rubber industry with less expenses and comparable efficiency. Originality/value – These new pigments are cheap and efficient and can be used in different fields other than rubber.

Nanocellulose (NCC) is incorporated into nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) latex with the composition 0 to 5 phr using dipping method. Mechanical properties of NBR/NCC composites using tensile test was used to characterize their mechanical performance and the fracture surfaces post tensile test were studied. The tensile strength of NBR/NCC composites increase significantly with the addition of nanocellulose. This could be anticipated due to the presence of Van der Waals interaction between hydrophilic natures of nanocellulose with hydrophobic of NBR consequently limits the tearing propagation. The result was supported with the fracture surfaces morphology viewed under Fourier Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM).

ABSTRACT To overcome the problem of fossil fuel depletion and associated environmental issues arising from the use of tire tread elastomers, a convenient, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient strategy was developed to prepare high-performance green solution polymerized styrene–butadiene rubber (SSBR)/silica nanocomposites by improving silica dispersion in the nonpolar polymer matrix via the introduction of a biobased nonpolar bottlebrush segment with two double bonds. Various elastomers containing biobased nonpolar bottlebrush β-myrcene segments were synthesized using an industrially robust anionic polymerization method. Results of robotic process automation, small-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that rubber with myrcene could significantly improve silica dispersibility and inhibit the strong filler–filler interactions, which are due to the formation of hydrogen bonding between the double bonds in the myrcene block and silanol groups on the silica surface and possibly to the spreading or infiltrating of myrcene bottlebrush segments onto silica. Furthermore, for the modified rubber, rolling resistance decreased by 41.7%, tear strength increased by 20.78%, and tensile strength increased by 77.8% with the elongation at break remained practically unchanged as compared with the unmodified silica/SSBR composite. On the basis of aforementioned assessment, we believe that silica-reinforced β-myrcene–based styrene–butadiene integrated rubber is a versatile and promising candidate for future tire tread elastomers.

Abstract Nanocellulose was extracted from bagasse (bagasse nanocellulose, BNC) by hydrolysis with alkali and acid, then grafted by maleic anhydride (MAH) and styrene (St). The modified nanocellulose (BMS) was further investigated to partially replace carbon black (CB) in St butadiene rubber (SBR) composites via coagulation to prepare SBR/BMS/CB composites. Through the comparison of the vulcanization characteristics, processing properties, mechanical properties, and dynamic mechanical performance of them, BMS proved to be more efficient than BNC. The results showed that BMS could activate the vulcanization process, suppress the Payne effect, and increase the modulus and hardness. Moreover, a fine BMS dispersion and strong interfacial interaction were achieved in SBR/BMS/CB composites. The observed reinforcement effects were evaluated based on the results of G′, tanδ and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of SBR/BMS/CB in comparison with SBR/BNC/CB composites.

Mechanical and vulcanization behaviors of styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR)/N330 and SBR/N330/PBMCN nanocomposites were investigated via partial replacement of SBR with pyrophyllite based modified composite nanopowder(PBMCN), which were prepared by melt mixing procedure. Results show a fairly good dispersion of PBMCN in the SBR/N330/PBMCN composites characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Mechanical and vulcanization behaviors of the as-abtained pruducts were measured according to GB/T 528-2009 and GB/T 16584-1996, respectively. Near properties in tensile strength, elongation at break and vulcanization behaviors were observed in SBR/N330/PBMCN nanocomposites when SBR was partially replaced by PBMCN for 8% mass fraction. A possible reinforcement mechanism of PBMCN to SBR/N330/PBMCN nanocomposites is also dicussed based on the experiment.
