SummaryIn an open study, ten people with phobia or panic disorder who could not travel repeatedly to a therapist accessed a computer-aided exposure self-help system (Fear Fighter) at home on the internet with brief therapist support by telephone. They improved significantly, and their outcome and satisfaction resembled those in patients with similar disorders who used Fear Fighter in clinics with brief face-to-face therapist support.

This article describes a unique project using commercial haptic interfaces to augment the teaching of high school physics. Since force is central to the teaching of physics, we believe that the use of haptics in virtual reality physics simulations has the potential for deeper, more engaging learning. Software has been developed which is freely-available on the internet, and HTML tutorials have been developed to support these haptics-augmented software activities in the teaching and learning of high school physics. Pilot study results are reported, which yielded positive feedback and suggestions for project improvement from high school physics students and teachers.

A pilot study devised to explore factors contributing to searcher persistence in varying electronic environments was conducted in the usability lab at the School of Information Studies at Florida State University in the summer and fall of 1997. Subjects were students who claimed some knowledge of WWW searching and students who had completed a basic course in traditional electronic searching.

A pilot study of immigrant youth ages 14-18 of African and Caribbean descent revealed a generation wired to the internet for their information needs. The study finds that they would benefit from library programs better suited to their day to day life questions concerned with living in the adopted community.
