This paper reports on the compatibility of waste rubber as binder for M2 High Speed Steel injection moulding. The feedstock was prepared at a powder loading of 65 vol.% using 22μm M2 High Speed Steel powder and the binders consisting of 55wt.% paraffin wax, 21wt.% polyethylene, 14wt.% waste rubber and 10wt.% stearic acid. The specimens were then sintered in vacuum and 95%N2/5%H2 atmosphere. The sintering in vacuum atmosphere occurred within a temperature range from1200°C to 1260°C, whilst the 95%N2/5%H2 atmosphere was carried out within a temperature range from 1220°C to 1300°C. The effects of the sintering atmosphere and temperature on the physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated.

Boron nitride coatings have been deposited onto high-speed steel substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique combined with RF-discharge. In order to improve adhesion and reduce internal stresses, substrates were subjected to gas nitriding. The structure and morphology of coatings were investigated applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanohardness and elastic modulus were examined employing a nanoanalyzer (CETR). On the basis of the conducted experiments, stable, crystalline, multiphase coatings have been obtained. It has been proved that morphology, structure and mechanical properties strongly depend on the parameters of the PLD process; in particular, the temperature of the substrate has a crucial influence on the properties of BN coatings.

Towards the end of the last century, vacuum heat treatment of high speed steels was increasingly used in the fabrication of precision cutting tools. This study investigates the influence of vacuum heat treatments at different pressures of quenching gas on the microstructure and mechanical properties of taps made of M35 high speed steel. Taps were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, apparent grain size and Vickers hardness measurements, and scratch tests. Failure analysis after tapping tests was also performed to determine the main fracture mechanisms. For all taps, the results showed that microstructures and the values of characteristics of secondary carbides, retained austenite, apparent grain size and Vickers hardness were comparable to previously reported ones for vacuum heat treated high speed steels. For taps vacuum heat treated at six bar, the highest plane strain fracture toughness was due to a higher content of finer small secondary carbides. In contrast, the lowest plane strain fracture toughness of taps vacuum heat treated at eight bar may be due to an excessive amount of finer small secondary carbides, which may provide a preferential path for crack propagation. Finally, the predominant fracture mechanism of taps was quasi-cleavage.

Systematic microstructural and mechanical investigations of the Fe84.3Cr4.3Mo4.6V2.2C4.6 alloy cast under special manufacturing conditions in the as-cast state and after specific heat treatment are presented to point out that the special manufacturing of the alloy led to high compression strength (up to 4680 MPa) combined with large fracture strain (about 20%) already in the as-cast state. One select chemical composition of the alloy, which was mentioned previously [Kühn et al., Appl. Phys. Lett.90, 261901 (2007)] enhanced mechanical properties already in the as-cast state. Furthermore, that composition is comparable to commercial high-speed steel. By the special manufacturing used, a high purity of elements and a high cooling rate, which led to a microstructure similar to a composite-like material, composed of dendritic area (martensite, bainite, and ferrite) and interdendritic area (e.g., complex carbides). The presented article demonstrates an alloy that exhibits already in the as-cast state high fracture strength and large ductility. Furthermore, these outstanding mechanical properties remain unchanged after heating up to 873 K.
