TiO2/hydroxyapatite (TiO2/HA) composite nanofiber mats were fabricated using an electrospinning technique. Subsequently, pamidronic acid (PDA) was immobilized on the surface of the TiO2/HA nanofiber mat to improve osseointegration. X-ray photoelectron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the PDA-immobilized TiO2/HA composite nanofiber mat (TiO2/HA-P). The potential of TiO2/HA-P as a bone scaffold was assessed by examining the cell adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts on the TiO2/HA-P composite nanofiber mat were slightly higher than those on the TiO2/HA composite nanofiber mat, whereas the viability of osteoclasts on the TiO2/HA-P nanofiber mat was significantly suppressed. These results suggest that the TiO2/HA-P nanofiber mat has the potential for use as a therapeutic bone implant.

A novel cationic polymer, poly[2-(tert-butylaminoethyl) methacrylate] (PTA), effectively kills various strains of bacteria with low toxicity to tissue cells. Graphene-based materials demonstrate exceptional electron transport capability, antibacterial activity, favorable nontoxicity, and versatile applicability. PTA can be grafted onto the graphene oxide (GO) surface (GO-g-PTA) to enhance the antimicrobial efficiency of the latter against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In this study, GO-g-PTA powders were successfully synthesized via free radical polymerization (GO-g-PTA-F) and atom transfer radical polymerization (GO-g-PTA-A). The antimicrobial efficiencies of graphene nanosheets (GNSs), GO-g-PTA-F, and GO-g-PTA-A were then investigated. Addition of GNS, GO-g-PTA-F, and GO-g-PTA-A to the PVA nanofibers was carried out elucidate the effects of filler amount and physical treatment on the morphology, microstructure, crystallization behaviors, antimicrobial efficiency, and cytotoxicity of the composite fibers. Finally, the potential applications of electrospun PVA/GNS, PVA/GO-g-PTA-F, and PVA/GO-g-PTA-A composite nanofiber mats to chronic wound care were evaluated. The resulting PVA/GO-g-PTA-A composite nanofiber mats showed enhanced antimicrobial ability against S. aureus compared with the PVA/GNS and PVA/GO-g-PTA-F composite nanofiber mats at the same filler volume percentage.

Nanofiber mats of polyvinyl(pyrrolidone) (PVP) with Garcinia mangostana extract (GME) as the encapsulated drug have been developed using electrospinning. SEM images of all electrospun PVP/GME composite nanofiber mats showed that they had similar and smooth morphology, no beads, and spindle shape. Its average diameter decreased and its surface area therefore increased with the decrease of its PVP concentration. The benefit of high surface area is obvious in drug delivery systems for poorly water-soluble drugs. Their FTIR spectra indicated that PVP and GME interacted intermolecularly via hydrogen bonds in the composite nanofiber mats. A conformational change in the C-H chain of PVP occurred in the composite nanofiber mats due to the intermolecular interactions. Their XRD patterns confirmed that they were amorphous because of amorphization during electrospinning. The XRD analyses also strengthened the FTIR studies; namely, GME and PVP formed intermolecular interactions in the electrospun composite nanofiber mats. As a result, GME as the encapsulated drug was molecularly dispersed in the electrospun PVP nanofiber matrix that functioned as a drug delivery system. From the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, the composite nanofiber mats exhibited very high antioxidant activities despite having been exposed to high voltage during electrospinning. Therefore, they are potential antioxidant products for food and pharmaceutics.
