‘Now we don’t even have anyone in fucking Manchester’: Falling Apart in the ‘Last Chance Saloon’From Enquirer (2012). David Mellor MP’s memorable phrase: ‘I do believe the popular press is drinking in the last chance saloon’, spoken on Channel 4’s Hard News Programme on 21 December 1989 has now become shorthand for criticism of British tabloids. The phrase of course has achieved a degree of irony, and received several embellishments some 25 years on. For example, media academic Tom O’Malley, in criticizing another Parliamentary Select Committee for ducking the issue of press behaviour writes: ‘The Select Committee … has left the music blaring, the lights glaring, and the Lords, tycoons, conglomerates and their hired hands free to carry on getting drunk and disorderly in the Last Chance Saloon.’ Blog posted on the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom website 23/1/2010 http://www.cpbf.org.uk/body.php?id=558&selpanel=1 accessed 10 April 2015.
