Pelleting of complete formula feeds in this country started in the early 1930’s. Today, it is estimated that over thirty million tons are pelleted annually. Pelleting of single ingredients, such as citrus fines, alfalfa meal, wheat by-products, and sugar beet pulp, received their impetus in the early 1950’s. Today, it appears that large quantities of citrus pulp will be pelleted for the domestic and foreign markets. Paper published with permission.

There are many kinds of natural and synthetic polymer systems which can be formed into packaging films. Well known examples are the cellulosics, polyolefins, polyesters, vinyls, and nylons. All of these may be formed into the thin (0.003" or less) sheets which constitute the films family. However, only a relatively few can be prepared in such a fashion that, when heat is applied, they will shrink-up in an orderly fashion. Paper published with permission.

From the Flavor Chemist’s standpoint, the Citrus Oil family of products provides important ingredients for the creation of a wide range of imitation flavors. This paper will describe some sources and types of citrus oils used by the Flavor Chemist, the types of imitation flavors in which citrus oils are used, and the flavor characteristics or functions which citrus oils provide in the various imitation flavor formulations. Paper published with permission.

We in the citrus processing industry have been contributing to the pollution of Florida lakes and streams, air and land for a number of years. Now, as just about everyone knows it is beginning to catch-up with us, and indeed its a problem all over the world where any food or chemical processing takes place. Some of us have already made the local newspapers and we will all probably make the national news before we get the problem solved. Paper published with permission.

Enforced regulations on permissible levels of noise exposure in all industrial plants can be anticipated in the near future. The Walsh-Healy Public Contracts Act, which specifies safety and health standards for federal supply contracts, is an example of federal legislation that already imposes such regulation on many industries. Prior to about 1940 there was little concentrated effort made to standardize motors as to their physical dimensions. This meant that mountings for a motor made by one manufacturer would not fit another motor of the same type, size and speed made by another manufacturer, or, for that matter, by the same manufacturer. Realizing these conditions caused much confusion and inconvenience when it was necessary to replace a motor or even in their use in production line assembly, the NEMA ultimately evolved a standardized list of specifications for motor dimensions. The majority of the American motor manufacturers eventually conformed to these specifications. Paper published with permission.

A nutrient is defined as a “nourishing substance”. It shouldn’t then, be called a pollutant. By definition it should be good for us. But, one man’s nutrient may be another man’s poison. We in the pollution control field actually are concerned when too many nutrients spoil the brew. Paper published with permission.
