The purpose of this study was to determine effective communication for distance learning. Which is viewed from the presence, response, understanding information from lecturers, and use of student communication applications in effective communication for distance lectures. This research uses descriptive quantitative method. Data were collected by administering a questionnaire accompanied by the reasons for choosing the answer chosen. The data in this study were analyzed descriptively which was presented in the form of a round diagram to describe effective communication for distance learning for students of the Islamic Education study program at the Tarbiyah Muhammadiyah University of Tanjung Redeb. The results showed that the attendance of students on a predetermined class schedule was 92%. Judging from the student response from the presence of lecturers by 100%. In terms of the student's ability to understand information from the lecturer, 55%. And in terms of online communication applications that are easier to use by students who are learning distance, WhatsApp is 62%. This shows that the message delivered by lecturers in distance learning can be accepted by all students. And the use of WhatsApp as a communication application that is most widely used by students has helped to realize effective communication for long-distance lectures.

This research is qualitative which aims to describe grammatical form of wish and hope, to classify elements of wish and hope sentences, and to analyse meaning of both words based on meaning tendency of grammatical form and elements. This research uses British National Corpus as data source, then the data are presented informally. This research shows that hope and wish have the same 5 grammatical forms, but hope and wish cannot be used interchangeable for having different tendency. Hope and wish can be synonymous conceptually, but characteristically they cannot be (real-unreal, and desired-wanted).

This research is a qualitative research which aims to describe the state of the use of English in Indonesia, in terms of language status and its influence on Indonesian society. To realize the purpose of this paper, the authors collected several news stories from national websites (such as Republika, Tribun News, detikNews, ANTARA, and Tempo) regarding the use of English in Indonesia as data that is explained and interpreted by descriptive qualitative analysis. The results of the study show that English is common and has massive use, even though it is still a foreign language. In fact, English has moved to improve its linguistic status, namely starting to act as a second language and the language of instruction.

ABSTRACTThis research examines violation of maxims of Garfield in Garfield comic strips. The purpose of this research is to find out types of maxims that are violated, describe how maxims are violated, and find out the reason behind the violation in Garfield’s utterances in Garfield comic strips. This research is descriptive qualitative. This research uses Cooperative Principle and Violation Maxim theories by Herbert Paul Grice. The data collection method used is documentation and note-taking. The data analysis method used is interactive model by Miles and Huberman with the cycle: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verifying. The results and discussion obtained is 15 comic strips that contain violation of maxims with 5 cases of violation of multiple maxims and 10 cases of violation of one single maxim and 11 reasons of violation of maxim (to save face, avoid of what is asked, cheer up hearer, convince hearer, deceive hearer, abuse verbally, avoid talking, satisfy hearer, hide the truth, express excitement, and get intension faster). Violation of maxim is dominated by violation of maxim of quantity with 9 cases in 9 comic strips. There are 8 cases of violation of maxim of quality in 8 comic strips, 2 cases of violation of maxim of manner in 2 comic strips, and 1 case of violation of maxim of relation in 1 comic strip.Keywords: Grice’s Violation Maxim, Utterance, Comic

This research focused on hamzah {أ} prefix and gemination {ــّــ} of fi’l tsulatsy mazid in Arabic: Case study from surah al baqarah. It was aimed to describe: (1)hamzah prefix and gemination of fi’l tsulatsy mazid’s distributions from surah al baqarah; (2) meaning from their distributions. The approach applied in this research is descriptivequalitative. Meanwhile, the method of collecting data is observation method with recording andtaking note technique.According to the number of data, there are five formulas found related to prefix hamzah {أ} and gemination {ــّــ}.In this case, hamzah {أ} prefixfrom surah al baqarahmight be distributeto verb, noun, adjective, andadverb. Then, gemination{ــّـ}might be distribute to verb, noun, and adjective. Furthermore, there was one similarity between them. Either hamzah prefix or gemination has benefactive meaning when it was distributed to verb, noun, and also adjective.

This research is a qualitative research which aims to describe the grammatical form of preposition in. This study uses Concordance to process Britain Awake's discourse in terms of Corpus Linguistics. This study shows that the preposition in can be in the form of simple prepositions and complex prepositions. These two forms of prepositions conform to the provisions put forward by experts, particularly the preposition formulas Preposition + Noun + Preposition. From the corpus data on oncordance, the simple prepositions is 73 (seventy three) and complex prepositions are 6 (six). The preposition in contains 13 (thirteen) of the 40 (forty) existing meanings.

Language and culture are two things that are interrelated in human life, especially in learning and langage teaching. The objective of this study is to dercribe the understanding of culture in learning English. This research belongs to qualitative research which applies libraries research to collect the data. The introduction of this culture is especially recommended for foreign language learning which places more emphasis on developing communication skills with the target language. The introduction of culture in learning English process can reduce the potential for misunderstandings to occur during the communication process.
