Spatial-Temporal Variation of Snow Black Carbon Concentration in Snow Cover in Northeast China from 2001 to 2016 Based on Remote Sensing

The amount of black carbon (BC) on snow surface can significantly reduce snow surface albedo in the visible-light range and change the surface radiative forcing effect. Therefore, it is key to study regional and global climate changes to understand the BC concentration on snow. In this study, we simulated the BC concentration on the surface snow of northeast China using an asymptotic radiative transfer model. From 2001 to 2016, the BC concentration showed no significant increase, with an average increase of 82.104 ng/g compared with that in the early 21st century. The concentration of BC in December was the largest (1344.588 ng/g) and decreased in January and February (1248.619 ng/g and 983.635 ng/g, respectively). The high black carbon content centers were concentrated in the eastern and central regions with dense populations and concentrated industries, with a concentration above 1200 ng/g, while the BC concentration in the southwest region with less human activities was the lowest (below 850 ng/g), which indicates that human activities played an important role in snow BC pollution. Notably, Heilongjiang province has the highest concentration, which may be related to its atmospheric stability in winter. These findings suggest that the BC pollution in northeast China has been aggravated from 2001 to 2016. It is estimated that the snow surface albedo will decrease by 16.448% due to the BC pollution of snow in northeast China. The problem of radiative forcing caused by black carbon to snow reflectivity cannot be ignored.

The Use of Composite GOES-R Satellite Imagery to Evaluate a TC Intensity and Vortex Structure Forecast by an FV3GFS-Based Hurricane Forecast Model

The HAFS model is an effort under the NGGPS and UFS initiatives to create the next generation of hurricane prediction and analysis system based on FV3-GFS. It has been validated extensively using traditional verification indicators such as tracker error and biases, intensity error and biases, and the radii of gale, damaging and hurricane strength winds. While satellite images have been used to verify hurricane model forecasts, they have not been used on HAFS. The community radiative transfer model CRTM is used to generate model synthetic satellite images from HAFS model forecast state variables. The 24 forecast snapshots in the mature stage of hurricane Dorian in 2019 are used to generate a composite model synthetic GOES-R infrared brightness image. The composite synthetic image is compared to the corresponding composite image generated from the observed GOES-R data, to evaluate the model forecast TC vortex intensity, size, and asymmetric structure. Results show that the HAFS forecast TC Dorian agrees reasonably well with the observation, but the forecast intensity is weaker, its overall vortex size smaller, and the radii of its eye and maximum winds larger than the observed. The evaluation results can be used to further improve the model. While these results are consistent with those obtained by traditional verification methods, evaluations based on composite satellite images provide an additional benefit with richer information because they have near-real-times spatially and temporally continuous high-resolution data with global coverage. Composite satellite infrared images could be used routinely to supplement traditional verification methods in the HAFS and other hurricane model evaluations. Note since this study only evaluated one hurricane, the above conclusions are only applicable to the model behavior of the mature stage of hurricane Dorian in 2019, and caution is needed to extend these conclusions to expect model biases in predicting other TCs. Nevertheless, the consistency between the evaluation using composite satellite images and the traditional metrics, of hurricane Dorian, shows that this method has the potential to be applied to other storms in future studies.

Prediction of Solar Irradiance over the Arabian Peninsula: Satellite Data, Radiative Transfer Model, and Machine Learning Integration Approach

Data from a moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer instrument onboard the Terra satellite along with a radiative transfer model and a machine learning technique were integrated to predict direct solar irradiance on a horizontal surface over the Arabian Peninsula (AP). In preparation for building appropriate residual network (ResNet) prediction models, we conducted some exploratory data analysis (EDA) and came to some conclusions. We noted that aerosols in the atmosphere correlate with solar irradiance in the eastern region of the AP, especially near the coastlines of the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. We also found low solar irradiance during March 2016 and March 2017 in the central (~20% less) and eastern regions (~15% less) of the AP, which could be attributed to the high frequency of dust events during those months. Compared to other locations in the AP, high solar irradiance was recorded in the Rub Al Khali desert during winter and spring. The effect of major dust outbreaks over the AP during March 2009 and March 2012 was also noted. The EDA indicated a correlation between high aerosol loading and a decrease in solar irradiance. The analysis showed that the Rub Al Khali desert is one of the best locations in the AP to harvest solar radiation. The analysis also showed the ResNet prediction model achieves high test accuracy scores, indicated by a mean absolute error of ~0.02, a mean squared error of ~0.005, and an R2 of 0.99.

Importance of radiative transfer processes in urban climate models: a study based on the PALM 6.0 model system

Including radiative transfer processes within the urban canopy layer into microscale urban climate models (UCMs) is essential to obtain realistic model results. These processes include the interaction of buildings and vegetation with shortwave and longwave radiation, thermal emission, and radiation reflections. They contribute differently to the radiation budget of urban surfaces. Each process requires different computational resources and physical data for the urban elements. This study investigates how much detail modellers should include to parameterize radiative transfer in microscale building-resolving UCMs. To that end, we introduce a stepwise parameterization method to the Parallelized Large-eddy Simulation Model (PALM) system 6.0 to quantify individually the effects of the main radiative transfer processes on the radiation budget and on the flow field. We quantify numerical simulations of both simple and realistic urban configurations to identify the major and the minor effects of radiative transfer processes on the radiation budget. The study shows that processes such as surface and vegetation interaction with shortwave and longwave radiation will have major effects, while a process such as multiple reflections will have minor effects. The study also shows that radiative transfer processes within the canopy layer implicitly affect the incoming radiation since the radiative transfer model is coupled to the radiation model. The flow field changes considerably in response to the radiative transfer processes included in the model. The study identified those processes which are essentially needed to assure acceptable quality of the flow field. These processes are receiving radiation from atmosphere based on the sky-view factors, interaction of urban vegetation with radiation, radiative transfer among urban surfaces, and considering at least single reflection of radiation. Omitting any of these processes may lead to high uncertainties in the model results.

Two Simulated Spectral Databases of Lunar Regolith: Method, Validation, and Application

Our simulated lunar regolith spectra database, based on the Hapke AMSA radiative transfer model (RTM), is a large supplement to the limited number of lunar spectra data. By analyzing the multiple solutions and applicable scopes of the Hapke model by means of Newton interpolation and the least square optimization method, an improved method was found for the simulation of spectra, but it remained challenging to use to invert mineral abundance. Then, we simulated the spectra, mineral abundance, particle size and maturity of 57 mare and highland samples of the Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium (LSCC) in size groups of 10 µm, 10–20 µm and 20–45 µm. The simulated and measured spectra fit well with each other, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99 and root mean square errors at a magnitude of 10-3. The parameters of mineral abundance, particle size and maturity are highly consistent with the measured values. Having confirmed the reliability of our simulation method, we analyzed the mechanism, reliability and applicability of the “spectral characteristic angle parameter” proposed by Lucey using the simulated spectral data of lunar regolith. Lucey’s method is only suitable for macro analysis of the entire moon, and the error is large when it is used for areas with high abundance of forsterite or ilmenite. In the spectral simulation of lunar regolith, olivine was subdivided into forsterite and fayalite, and the two end-members were mixed to approximately estimate the effect of the chemical composition of olivine on the spectra, which has been confirmed to be feasible.

Contrasting Mineral Dust Abundances from X-Ray Diffraction and Reflectance Spectroscopy

Mineral dust particles dominate aerosol mass in the atmosphere and directly modify Earth’s radiative balance through absorption and scattering. This radiative forcing varies strongly with mineral composition, yet there is still limited knowledge on the mineralogy of atmospheric dust. In this study, we performed X-ray diffraction (XRD) and reflectance spectroscopy measurements on 37 different atmospheric dust samples collected as airfall in an urban setting to determine mineralogy and the relative proportions of minerals in the dust mixture. Most commonly, XRD has been used to characterize dust mineralogy; however, without prior special sample preparation, this technique is less effective for identifying poorly crystalline or amorphous phases. In addition to XRD measurements, we performed visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared (VNIR/SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy for these natural dust samples as a complementary technique to determine minerology and mineral abundances. Reflectance spectra of dust particles are a function of a nonlinear combination of mineral abundances in the mixture. Therefore, we used a Hapke radiative transfer model along with a linear spectral mixing approach to derive relative mineral abundances from reflectance spectroscopy. We compared spectrally derived abundances with those determined semi-quantitatively from XRD. Our results demonstrate that total clay mineral abundances from XRD are correlated with those from reflectance spectroscopy and follow similar trends; however, XRD underpredicts the total amount of clay for many of the samples. On the other hand, calcite abundances are significantly underpredicted by SWIR compared to XRD. This is caused by the weakening of absorption features associated with the fine particle size of the samples, as well as the presence of dark non-mineral materials (e.g., asphalt) in these samples. Another possible explanation for abundance discrepancies between XRD and SWIR is related to the differing sensitivity of the two techniques (crystal structure vs chemical bonds). Our results indicate that it is beneficial to use both XRD and reflectance spectroscopy to characterize airfall dust, because the former technique is good at identifying and quantifying the SWIR-transparent minerals (e.g., quartz, albite, and microcline), while the latter technique is superior for determining abundances for clays and non-mineral components.

Radiative Transfer Model Simulations for Ground-Based Microwave Radiometers in North China

Ground-based microwave radiometer profilers (MWRPs) are widely used to provide high-temporal resolution atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. The quality of the observed brightness temperature (TB) from MWRPs is key for retrieving accurate atmospheric profiles. In this study, TB simulations derived from a radiative transfer model (RTM) were used to assess the quality of TB observations. Two types of atmospheric profile data (conventional radiosonde and ERA5 reanalysis) were combined with the RTM to obtain TB simulations, then compared with corresponding observations from three MWRPs located in different places in North China to investigate the influence of input atmospheric profiles on TB simulations and evaluate the quality of TB observations from the three MWRPs. The comparisons of the matching samples under clear-sky conditions showed that TB simulations derived from both radiosonde and ERA5 profiles were very close to the TB observations from most of the MWRP channels; however, the correlation was lower and the bias was obvious at 51.26 GHz and 52.28 GHz, which indicates that the oxygen absorption component in the RTM needs to be improved for lower-frequency temperature channels. The difference in location of the radiosonde and MWRP sites affected the TB simulations for the water vapor channels, but had little impact on temperature channels that are insensitive to humidity. Comparisons of both simulations (ERA5 and Radiosonde) and the corresponding TB observations from the three sites indicated that the water vapor channels observation quality for the MWRP located in southern Beijing needs improvement. For the two types of profile data, ERA5 profiles have a more positive effect on TB simulations in the water vapor channels, such as enhanced consistence, reduced bias and standard deviation between simulations and observations for those MWRPs located away from the radiosonde station. Therefore, hourly ERA5 data are an optimal option in terms of compensating for limited radiosonde measurements and enhancing the monitoring quality of MWRP observations within 24 h.

Evaluation of surface processes in the PALM model system 6.0 for a real urban environment: a case study in Dejvice, Prague

<p>In recent years, the the Large-eddy simulation (LES) model PALM has been rapidly developed its capability to simulate physical processes within urban environments. For example, this includes energy-balance solvers for building and land surfaces, a radiative transfer model to account for multiple reflections and shading, a plant-canopy model to consider the effects of plants on flow (thermo-)dynamics, and a chemistry transport model, as well as nesting capabilities that enable “hot-spot” analysis, to name a few.</p> <p>This contribution provides an evaluation of modeled meteorological as well as ground and wall-surface quantities against dedicated in-situ measurements taken in an urban environment in Dejvice, Prague. Measurements included monitoring of surface temperature and wall heat fluxes. Simulations were performed for multiple days during several summer and winter episodes, characterized by different atmospheric conditions. To consider time-evolving synoptic conditions, boundary conditions were obtained from mesoscale WRF simulations.</p> <p>For the simulated episodes, the resulting temperature and wind speed within street canyons show a realistic representation of the observed state, except that the LES did not adequately capture night-time cooling near the surface in some scenarios. At most of the evaluation points, the simulated surface temperature reproduces the observed surface temperature reasonably well, for both, absolute and daily amplitude values. However, especially for the winter episodes and for modern buildings with multi-layer wall structure, the heat transfer through the walls is not well captured in some cases, leading to discrepancies between the modeled and observed wall-surface temperature. Moreover, we also show that the model performance with respect to the observations strongly depends on the accuracy of the input data. To name a few, this includes e.g. the prescribed initial soil moisture, the given leaf-area densities to account for correct shading, or if a facade is insulated or not. Additionally, we will point out current model limitations, particularly implications accompanied by the step-like topography on the Cartesian grid, or wide glass facades that are not fully represented in terms of radiative processes.</p> <p>With our findings we are able to evaluate the representation of physical processes in PALM, while also pointing out specific shortcomings.</p>

Cloud detection methods for a stand-alone ground based microwave radiometer

<p>The project “Pilotstation” at DWD employs a test bed setup to assess data availability, quality, observation impact and operational sustainability for five different ground based remote sensing instruments. The instruments in question, also referred to as “profilers”, are designed to continuously measure vertical profiles of thermodynamic and cloud/aerosol related variables.</p> <p>A ground based microwave radiometer (MWR) is one of the instruments evaluated in the project “Pilotstation”. MWR primarily measure downwelling radiation in the K-band and V-band in the form of brightness temperatures (TB). All-sky temperature and low-resolution humidity profiles as well as high-accuracy liquid water path (LWP, ΔLWP: ± 10-20 gm<sup>-2</sup>) and integrated water vapour (IWV, ΔIWV: ~ ± 0.5 kgm<sup>-2</sup>) are secondary products, which can be derived from the TB.</p> <p>The adaptation of the fast radiative transfer model RTTOV for ground based instruments enabled weather services to go forward with directly assimilating MWR TB rather than secondary products. First assimilation experiments of MWR TB at DWD were successful. Alongside other quality checks, the data assimilation (DA) relies on a cloud detection beforehand. The most frequent reason for rejecting data from DA is the suspected presence of clouds, consequently reliably identifying clouds without excessively rejecting clear-sky data is especially important for a high availability of suitable data.</p> <p>The study presented focuses on the requirements of operational DA and a stand-alone setup of an MWR. The work compares the performance of cloud detection algorithms used in scientific publications based on MWR observations. The comparisons include methods using TB, LWP and their variability. For this the CloudNet classification time series at Lindenberg and observation minus model background statistics serve as references. The presentation will also include progress made on refining the cloud detection schemes at hand in order to achieve a higher precision and to better meet the requirements of DA.</p>
