Emergence of teleradiology, PACS, and other radiology IT solutions in Acta Radiologica

For this historical review, we searched a database containing all the articles published in Acta Radiologica during its 100-year history to find those on the use of information technology (IT) in radiology. After reading the full texts, we selected the presented articles according to major radiology IT domains such as teleradiology, picture archiving and communication systems, image processing, image analysis, and computer-aided diagnostics in order to describe the development as it appeared in the journal. Publications generally follow IT megatrends, but because the contents of Acta Radiologica are mainly clinically oriented, some technology achievements appear later than they do in journals discussing mainly imaging informatics topics.

Measuring Maximum Head Circumference Within the Picture Archiving and Communication System: A Fully Automatic Approach

This study describes an automatic technique to accurately determine the maximum head circumference (MHC) measurement from MRI studies within the Picture Archiving and Communications System, and can automatically add this measurement to the final radiology report. Participants were selected through a retrospective chart review of patients referred to the neurosurgery clinic. Forty-nine pediatric patients with ages ranging from 5 months to 11 years were included in the study. We created 14 printed ring structures to mirror the head circumference values at various ages along the x-axis of the Nellhaus chart. The 3D-printed structures were used to create MRI phantoms. Analytical obtainment of circumference values from the 3D objects and phantom images allowed for a fair estimation and correction of errors on the image-based-measuring instrument. Then, standard manual MHC measurements were performed and compared to values obtained from the patients' MRI T1 images using the tuned instrument proposed in this document. A T-test revealed no statistical difference between the manual assessments and the ones obtained by the automation p = 0.357, α = 0.05. This automatic application augments the more error-prone manual MHC measurement, and can add a numerical value to the final radiology report as a standard application.

Prevalence of metacarpophalangeal sesamoid bones of the hand in Turkish population

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the prevalence and location of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) sesamoid bones using computed tomography (CT) images. Patients and methods: A total of 767 hands of 735 patients (503 males, 232 females; mean age: 36.9±17.0 years; range, 18 to 105 years) obtained from picture archiving and communication system were retrospectively analyzed between January 2016 and December 2019. The sesamoid bones of MCP joints I, II, III, IV, and V were recorded. Data including age, sex, side, number, pathologies, and location of the sesamoid bones were recorded. Results: The prevalence of sesamoid bones was found to be 100%, 37.61%, 1.17%, 0.5%, and 80% in MCP I, II, III, IV, and V, respectively. There was no significant correlation between the sex of the patient and presence of sesamoid bone at MCP II or MCP V (p>0.970 and p=0.176, respectively). The presence of sesamoid bone at MCP II was statistically significantly correlated with the presence of sesamoid bone at MCP V (p<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in the side and sesamoid prevalence in the remaining 703 patients (p>0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of MCP V sesamoid bone is higher than previous studies from our country. The CT of hand can be used to determine sesamoid fractures and degenerative conditions of sesamoids.
