Abstract Dense slicks of Trichodesmium were found in the shelf-break region in the Southwestern Atlantic during austral spring and autumn. A total of 14 slicks were sampled, and the absorption coefficients of phytoplankton (aph(λ)) indicated clear spectral features of phycobilin pigments. Although these samples showed low-degradation products and detrital importance, the chemotaxonomy, shape, and magnitude of aph(λ) indicated the importance of co-occurring species in the slicks. In addition to the difficulties of enumerating trichomes in situ, co-occurring species affect the expected chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) to trichome ratio, further complicating the detection of Trichodesmium by ocean colour remote sensing. Our results showed that trichome density could be predicted similarly by Chl-a and by aph(621), especially for trichome densities above 8000 trichomes L−1. The phycocyanin spectral feature is a potential source of quantitative information for the detection of Trichodesmium, but noninvasive techniques for quantifying the abundance of Trichodesmium in natural waters are necessary.

The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS ) is an ongoing 12-band photometric optical survey, observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern Hemisphere from the dedicated JAST/T80 telescope at the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ). The T80Cam is a camera with a field of view of 2 deg2 mounted on a telescope with a diameter of 83 cm, and is equipped with a unique system of filters spanning the entire optical range (3500–10 000 Å). This filter system is a combination of broad-, medium-, and narrow-band filters, optimally designed to extract the rest-frame spectral features (the 3700–4000 Å Balmer break region, Hδ, Ca H+K, the G band, and the Mg b and Ca triplets) that are key to characterizing stellar types and delivering a low-resolution photospectrum for each pixel of the observed sky. With a typical depth of AB ∼21.25 mag per band, this filter set thus allows for an unbiased and accurate characterization of the stellar population in our Galaxy, it provides an unprecedented 2D photospectral information for all resolved galaxies in the local Universe, as well as accurate photo-z estimates (at the δ z/(1 + z)∼0.005–0.03 precision level) for moderately bright (up to r ∼ 20 mag) extragalactic sources. While some narrow-band filters are designed for the study of particular emission features ([O II]/λ3727, Hα/λ6563) up to z <  0.017, they also provide well-defined windows for the analysis of other emission lines at higher redshifts. As a result, J-PLUS has the potential to contribute to a wide range of fields in Astrophysics, both in the nearby Universe (Milky Way structure, globular clusters, 2D IFU-like studies, stellar populations of nearby and moderate-redshift galaxies, clusters of galaxies) and at high redshifts (emission-line galaxies at z ≈ 0.77, 2.2, and 4.4, quasi-stellar objects, etc.). With this paper, we release the first ∼1000 deg2 of J-PLUS data, containing about 4.3 million stars and 3.0 million galaxies at r <  21 mag. With a goal of 8500 deg2 for the total J-PLUS footprint, these numbers are expected to rise to about 35 million stars and 24 million galaxies by the end of the survey.

Abstract A significant decadal change is detected in the break of the western North Pacific summer monsoon (WNPSM) around 2002/03. For the period 1979–2002, the monsoon break occurs in early August, accompanied by noticeable convection suppression over the ocean to the east of the Mariana Islands (10°–20°N, 140°–160°E). However, for the period 2003–11, the monsoon break there is delayed until mid-August. This decadal change is attributable to the differences in the evolution of the WNPSM. Over this break region, convection becomes weaker after its peak in late July for the former period, and the monsoon break appears in early August. In contrast, for the latter period, convection continues strengthening in late July and reaches its peak in early August, and the monsoon break is delayed until mid-August. The differences in the evolution of sea surface temperature (SST) in the western Pacific warm pool region are responsible for the decadal change in the evolution of the WNPSM. In contrast to the former period, for the latter period the southern extent of the warm pool is remarkably warmed, and tends to be higher than the northern extent in mid- and late July, which enhances atmospheric convection nearby but inhibits the development of convection over the northern extent through a local meridional circulation. As the SST in the northern extent continues warming and becomes higher than that in the southern extent, the convection over the northern extent reaches its maximum intensification in early August. The presented results highlight that the spatial pattern of SST changes can modulate the subseasonal evolution of the WNPSM.

Kinetic studies on the reactions of Y-aryl phenyl isothiocyanophosphates with substituted X-anilines and deuterated X-anilines were carried out in acetonitrile at 55.0 °C. The free-energy relationships with X in the nucleophiles were biphasic concave upwards with a break region between X = H and 4-Cl, giving unusual positive ρX and negative βX values with less basic anilines (X = 4-Cl and 3-Cl). A stepwise mechanism with rate-limiting bond breaking for more basic anilines and with rate-limiting bond formation for less basic anilines is proposed based on the positive and negative ρXY values, respectively. The deuterium kinetic isotope effects involving deuterated anilines (XC6H4ND2) showed primary normal and secondary inverse DKIEs for more basic and less basic anilines, rationalized by frontside attack involving hydrogen-bonded four-center-type TSf and backside attack TSb, respectively. The positive ρX values with less basic anilines are substantiated by the tight TS, in which the extent of the bond formation is great and the degree of the bond breaking is considerably small.

The final phyllosoma of Panulirus cygnus metamorphoses to a non-feeding puerulus that lives on energy reserves accumulated in the final larva, and the metamorphic moult occurs mainly in the slope region adjoining the shelf-break off Western Australia. A review of the literature on field studies, laboratory rearing and nutritional studies of phyllosomal and other decapod zoeal larvae provided no evidence that metamorphosis in P. cygnus (or other shallow-water palinurids) is triggered by a direct environmental cue. It did indicate that metamorphosis results from the culmination of sustained nutrition and reserve energy levels through the later larval phase. Therefore, since the puerulus is secondarily lecithotrophic, it is considered that metamorphosis occurs only after the final phyllosoma has reached some critical, specific, level of stored energy reserves. Appropriate food for later larval development and successful metamorphosis of P. cygnus is more abundant in the shelf-break region (than further offshore) because this is a region of high plankton and micronekton biomass dominated by the Leeuwin Current. It also explains why metamorphosis occurs mainly in the shelf-break region. This review indicates research necessary for evaluation of the present interpretation and of larval recruitment processes in this species.
