Continuously Vegetation Greening over Inner Mongolia for the Past Three Decades

The warming climate has rapidly altered vegetation growth in drylands, and consequently, has put great pressure on sustainable livelihoods. Various datasets have been applied from local to global scale to study vegetation dynamics and there is a lack of solid comparison among multiple datasets. Note that vegetation growth might shift over time and the greening and browning components over a long-time span might be masked by a linear trend. Here, we aim to monitor the long-term and nonlinear dynamics in vegetation greenness for Inner Mongolia (an important part of dryland Asia). As a useful tool that indicates vegetation greenness, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and LAI (Leaf Area Index) integrals derived from the GIMMS (Global Inventory Modelling and Mapping Studies) NDVI3g and the GIMMS LAI3g products are applied. During the period of 1982-2016, NDVI/LAI integrals have an overall acceptable consistency in characterizing the trends of vegetation greenness, with NDVI large/small integrals and LAI large/small integrals increase at a rate of 0.96, 1.72, 2.23, and 3.13 per decade, respectively. Inner Mongolia experienced a noticeable greening process (71% and 82% greening area in NDVI large/small integrals, 67% and 73% greening area in LAI large/small integrals), despite the fragmentally distributed browning trends in eastern and partial northern Inner Mongolia. As inferred from nonlinear trend analysis, we found the greening process is still prevalent. The browning of eastern Inner Mongolia under the linear analysis was actually transferring from browning to greening, while the greening trend in northern Inner Mongolia was changing to browning. Increased occurrences in the frequency of breakpoints after 1999 suggest that previously stable vegetation ecology is more sensitive to external disturbances such as altered climatic impact and anthropogenic intervention.

Re-Os Geochronology, Whole-Rock and Radiogenic Isotope Geochemistry of the Wulandele Porphyry Molybdenum Deposit in Inner Mongolia, China, and Their Geological Significance

The Wulandele molybdenum deposit is a porphyry-type Mo deposit in the Dalaimiao area of northern Inner Mongolia, China. Molybdenite Re-Os dating yields a model age of 134.8 ± 1.9 Ma, with the fine-grained monzogranite most closely related to the mineralization. The lithogeochemical data show that the monzogranite is weakly peraluminous, high-K calc-alkaline series, with reduced to slightly oxidized, highly fractionated I-type granite characteristics. The relatively low initial 87Sr/86Sr (range from 0.705347 to 0.705771), weakly negative εNd(t) (range from −2.0 to −1.3), and crust-mantle mixing of Pb isotopes suggest that the monzogranite originated from the partial melting of mafic juvenile lower continental crust derived from the depleted mantle, with a minor component of ancient continental crust. Combined with the regional tectonic evolution, we argue that the partial melting, then injection, of the monzogranite melt was probably triggered by collapse or delamination of the thickened lithosphere, which was mainly in response to the post-orogenic extensional setting of the Mongol–Okhotsk belt; this is possibly coupled with a back-arc extension related to Paleo-Pacific plate subduction. The extensively fractional crystallization of the monzogranite melt is the crucial enrichment process, resulting in magmatic hydrothermal Mo mineralization in the Wulandele deposit, and the Cretaceous granitoids are generally favorable to form Mo mineralization in the Dalaimiao area.

Distribution and antimicrobial resistance of enteric pathogens in Chinese paediatric diarrhoea: a multicentre retrospective study, 2008–2013

SUMMARYThe enteric pathogens causing diarrhoea impair children's health severely. This study retrospectively analysed 1577 pathogens isolated from inpatients and outpatients in six hospitals located in Northern (Inner Mongolia), Northeastern (Hebei), Eastern (Shanghai and Jiangsu), Southern (Hainan) and Central (Hubei) China between 2008 and 2013. Of the 1577 enteric pathogens, Salmonella presented with the highest frequency (36·0%), followed by diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (23·7%), Staphylococcus aureus (15·0%), Shigella (13·1%), and Aeromonas (4·6%). The predominant pathogens varied in different regions of China, with Salmonella most prevalent in Shanghai and Hainan, diarrhoeagenic E. coli most prevalent in Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu and Hubei, and Shigella most prevalent in Hebei. Enteric pathogens were more frequently isolated in males (56·9%) than in females (43·1%). The highest proportion of all enteric pathogens was found in infants (67·6%) with a peak in summer and autumn (68·5%). Antimicrobial susceptibility assay demonstrated that Shigella was more resistant to ampicillin, ceftriaxone and sulfamethoxazole than Salmonella. Of the top two serotypes in Salmonella, Typhimurium was more resistant to ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and chloramphenicol than Enteritidis (P < 0·001). Meanwhile, the resistance rates of Shigella flexneri against ampicillin/sulbactam, ciprofloxacin, and chloramphenicol were significantly higher than those of Shigella sonnei (P < 0·001). Multidrug resistance was apparent in 58·2% of Shigella and 45·9% of Salmonella, and this phenomenon was more pronounced in S. flexneri.
