In this study, we demonstrate a simple and effective way to fabricate functionally graded TiNi-based alloys with linear variations of composition and martensitic transformation behavior. Ti50Ni50 and Ti50Ni35Cu15 alloy strips were fabricated through a melt overflow process. The compositionally graded diffusion couple was fabricated by annealing two strips of different alloy compositions after being placed face to face in a pressing graphite mold. The mechanical properties and martensitic transformation behaviour of the diffusion couple were analysed by tensile test and DSC. The compositionally graded specimens exhibited unique superelastic property and wide martensitic formation temperature range. Such mechanical and thermal behaviors of the compositionally graded TiNi-based alloy offer good function and controllability for actuators.

The hydrological hazard for the municipality of Yautepec de Zaragoza, State of Morelos, Mexico, is evaluated considering the overflow process of the rivers located in the Yautepec sub-basin. Different scenarios of hydrological hazard were generated to identify those areas with high flood potential using hydraulic modeling for three return periods (Rp) of 50, 100 and 500 years based on statistical analysis of the maximum annual discharge of the Yautepec hydrometric station. We used the Hec-Ras software and geographic information systems (GIS) to model the different flood scenarios. Our results indicate that 10% (1.5 km2) of the total urban area of the municipality will be flooded for a return period of 50 years. About 12% (1.8 km2) of the territory will be affected by flood for a Rp of 100 years. For a Rp of 500 years, approximately 13.5% (2.1 km2) of the municipality’s area will be flooded. Spatially, the central and southern regions of the municipality will be affected by flood heights greater than 1 m for Rp of 100 and 500 years. The northern zone will have heights of less than 0.50 m for Rp of 50 years. Our results can be used as a tool to prevent and reduce the impact of future floods in the municipality of Yautepec de Zaragoza.

Sewer overflow is one of the main causes of urban floods. Using an urban model called MURI recently built by Irstea, a series of experiments are carried out in order to simulate overflowing cases. The first configuration that was studied is a single street of 5.4 m in length, 0.15 m in width with a slope of 0.1% and two street inlets (of which the orifice diameter is 14 mm) that ensure the connection with the sewer network. Inflows of 2 and 3 L/s are used for the street and an inflow of 0.5 L/s for the sewer network that is partially closed in order to obtain overflow at the street inlets. The rising of the weir downstream the street permitted to obtain same water depth and to measure the vertical profiles of velocities. This study allowed us to investigate how the overflow process influence the water depth and the velocity field around the street inlet. The exchange flow discharge can be calculated using either an orifice equation or the head loss in the two pipes connecting the street and the sewage network, both methods requesting calibration, which is made difficult by the complexity of the flow around the street inlets.

We consider some simple Markov and Erlang queues with limited storage space. Although the departure processes from some such systems are known to be Poisson, they actually consist of the superposition of two complex correlated processes, the overflow process and the output process. We measure the cross-correlation between the counting processes for these two processes. It turns out that this can be positive, negative, or even zero (without implying independence). The models suggest some general principles on how big these correlations are, and when they are important. This may suggest when renewal or moment approximations to similar processes will be successful, and when they will not.
