Wear Analysis of Materials Used for a Track Steering System in Abrasive Soil Mass

This paper presents the results of comparative research on materials used for a track steering system in an abrasive soil mass. Two types of elastomer tracks were tested: a steel-rubber stave from an asphalt paver and a rubber overlay used in vehicles with a steel track chain. The results obtained were related to the wear of Hadfield steel. The tests were carried out on a “spinning bowl” stand in a natural soil mass, which consisted of two types of soil: light and heavy. It was shown that the resistance to abrasive wear depended on the grain size of the worked soil and the chemical composition of the materials. Rubber overlay was found to have the highest resistance index in all types of soils. It was made of high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, ethylene acrylate/ethyl copolymer (ethylene acrylate 18%) and ethylene/propylene copolymer with an ethylene content of 60%. An analysis of the condition of the machined surfaces after friction tests complements the results presented.

Electrochemical Corrosion Behaviour of Different Grades of WC-Co, High-Cr White Cast Irons and Hadfield Steel in 1 M Sulphuric Acid

Electrochemical polarisation tests were carried out on three grades of WC-Co cemented carbides to investigate the corrosive behaviour of the hardmetals and rank them as viable protective liners for chutes and skips in the mining industry. The cobalt binder content and WC particle size varied. The binder content ranged from 6–12 wt%, and the grain size of the WC particles ranged from 0.4–2.3 µm. The performance of the WC-Co hardmetal was compared to three different grades of high chromium white cast irons and Hadfield steel. The cast irons varied in both their chromium content and the morphology of the Cr-rich primary carbides. Potentiodynamic polarisation and linear polarization resistance scans were used to determine the corrosion current density and other electrochemical parameters. The microstructural characteristics of the samples were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscopy. The potentiodynamic scans revealed that, although the WC-Co alloys were found to have generally improved corrosion resistance, it was the high-Cr white cast iron (22 wt% Cr) that recorded the lowest corrosion current density and therefore displayed the best resistance against corrosive attack in 1 M H2SO4. The Hadfield steel exhibited the poorest resistance to corrosion and therefore, suffered the most degradation to its exposed surface.

The Repair of Defects in High-Manganese Steel Castings by Welding Technology

Welding technologies are used to repair defects in cast parts of high - manganese austenitic steel (Hadfield steel). These include repair welding for newly manufactured castings, welding the formed defects in the old operating cast parts and, finally, for cladding layer of wear-resistant metal on the surface of the cast parts. Manual metal arc welding (MMAW) are used as often as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and of flux-core wire welding (FCAW-S). These welding processes make possible to obtain a weld metal with the expected quality of the restored surface and a slight distortion of the base metal structure. The article presents methods of the casting repair by welding and surfacing. The parameters of welding and surfacing procedures are given, welding materials are recommended, and the methods for nondestructive testing of welds are prescribed.

Hardening by Transformation and Cold Working in a Hadfield Steel Cone Crusher Liner

This paper presents the characterization of a secondary cone crusher concave liner made of Hadfield steel used in Chilean mining after crushing copper minerals during all service life. During use, a cone crusher concave liner suffers indentation (cold working) and abrasion; this combination provides the concave with a layer that constantly renews itself, maintaining a surface highly resistant to abrasive wear. The results presented here were obtained using optical microscopy, microhardness test, measuring abrasion using the dry sand/rubber wheel apparatus, and x-ray diffraction peaks analysis through the classic Williamson–Hall method. After analysis of results, two hardened surfaces have been found—one a product of heat treatment and the other due to deformation during use. This work proposes ways to explain them; the first one uses a thermodynamic model to calculate stacking fault energy, and the second compares the liner with cold-rolled samples.
