Background: Both physical and psychological factors have been associated with functional disability. However, the associations between stress-coping strategies and future functional disability remain unclear. Methods: We analyzed 2,924 participants who did not have incidence of functional disability or death within the first 3 years of the baseline survey and were aged 65 years or more at the end of follow-up. Stress-coping strategies were assessed via a self-administered questionnaire (emotional expression, emotional support seeking, positive thought, problem-solving, and disengagement) in a baseline survey from 2006 to 2014. Levels of coping strategies were classified as low, middle, and high based of frequency. Functional disability decline was followed up using the long-term-care insurance program until November 1, 2019. Functional disability decline was defined as a new long-term-care insurance program certification. Cox proportional hazards model with competing risk analysis for death was used to evaluate associations between coping strategy levels and functional disability. Results: During the follow-up period, we observed 341 cases of functional disability and 73 deaths without previous incidence of functional disability. A significant inverse association between “positive thought” and “problem-solving” and future functional disability was observed. Multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for functional disability were 0.68 (0.51–0.92) for high levels of “positive thought” and 0.73 (0.55–0.95) for high levels of “problem-solving,” compared with low levels of the coping strategies. The inverse association was stronger in men. Conclusions: Some subcomponents of stress-coping strategies might be associated with future incidence of functional disability among older adults.

In this article, we explore and seek to understand transnational teacher migration from the narrative expressions of two women who migrated from their home countries to another southern African country. The data are complemented by a self-constructed narrative of a woman who left her home country. Framed through Appreciative Inquiry, the study observes that all individuals, organizations, and institutions are powered by positive thought and have some good or something that works well for them at some point. The data generated from two narrative expressions were analyzed through narrative analysis with emerging themes presented. In addition, data were complemented by a coconstructed narrative of a woman who gave up her career aspirations to migrate with the family. With the latter, the situation got more complicated when the husband untimely passed away. Issues such as gender discrimination and socialization as well as imaginations of positive futures do play a role in women teachers’ transnational migration decisions. We conclude that transnational women teacher migration should be understood within its own socially constructed, relativist ontology and subjectivist epistemology, which may be influenced by the power of appreciative, positive thought.

This article reviews the relationship between inequality and social conflict in society. This literature review finds that there are at least four schools of thought in contemporary conflict theory that examine the relationship of inequality to conflict. The first is the flow of positive thought which includes the theory of structural conflict. Second is the flow of humanism thinking which consists of symbolic interactions and social construction theory. The third is the school of thought which consists of the thoughts of Jurgen Habermas and Pierre Bourdieu. And the last is a multi-disciplinary school built by Johan Galtung and Anthony Giddens. The four schools of thought develop classical conflict theory, especially Marx's thought that argues that economics is the only factor of conflict in society.

Introduction Nerve injuries to the upper trunk, lateral cord and musculocutaneous nerve can result in the loss of active biceps contraction. Oberlin nerve transfer surgery is often performed to re-animate the biceps muscle. Outcome studies following this surgery almost exclusively focus on muscle strength. To date, no research has focused on the lived experience of motor recovery following Oberlin nerve transfer. Methods A focus group discussion ( n = 6) allowed participants to give their accounts of successful restoration of active elbow flexion. Qualitative analysis of the transcript identified ‘significant statements’ which were used to generate themes and capture participants’ lived experience. Results Four main themes were identified as being important components of the lived experience: ‘pain’, ‘patience and positive thought’, ‘functionality and daily lifestyle’ and ‘the biceps muscle’ itself. Each theme was identified to have several subthemes and constituent parts. Conclusions The lived experience of motor recovery is complex, multifaceted and individual to the patient. This study has identified areas where clinicians may be able to better tailor their care to the individual and suggested adjuncts to therapy have been included.

Abstract. This study discusses about body image undergone by a seventeen year old boy named Troy, the main character in K. L. Going’s novel Fat Kid Rules the World. The study focuses on Troy’s perception of his body. Qualitative research is applied in this study due to the fact that this study provides understanding into the problems through description. In addition, psychological approach is employed as this study deals with the psychological motivation of the main character in the novel. From the analysis it is found that Troy has negative body image which consists of three areas, namely belief in being heavy, belief in look, and feeling about how people regard his physical structure and look. His negative body image is caused by his negative thoughts and feelings about the size of his body which he believes is huge and ugly so that people always look at him and make fun of his size. Based on the analysis it can be concluded that negative body image could be avoided by developing positive thought and feeling about one’s body . One should not value oneself on the basis of physical appearance but on the basis of achievement. Keywords: body image, perception, Fat Kid Rules the World

The main objective of this research is to analyze the use of dialogue journal to teach writing. This case study research was conducted at one of senior high school in Cianjur. The research purposively sampling twenty students of grade XI. In order to collect the data, I used three techniques of data collection namely interview, observation, and document analysis. The research findings revealed that: (1) The reasons behind the implementation of dialogue journal were because the teacher wanted to give students opportunity to fulfill the need of reflection and expressing ideas while the belief relied on the standpoint to give non-threatening atmosphere for students to freely express themselves and to give opportunities for teacher to observe students’ progress and their personal background. The procedure of dialogue journal was done five up to seven minutes which involved three parts, those were greeting/ salutation, body, and closing. While, the learning situation was positive in the case of interaction, attitude, and motivation. Students’ responses were classified into open-ended responses which displayed students’ positive thought, feeling, and reaction because they had experienced many advantages in doing dialogue journal as well as silence which indicated the moment when the students reduced interaction to only center their attention in writing dialogue journal; (2) Teacher’s difficulties in doing dialogue journal were managing time to handle with students’ dialogue journal overload and responding to super active students. Whereas, students’ difficulties in doing dialogue journal were writing in limited time, finding suitable vocabulary, using correct grammar, and responding as well as giving suggestions to the questions given by the teacher; and (3) To cope with such difficulties, the teacher should manage a schedule to be able to correct students’ work and respond to the students’ questions. Furthermore, students’ difficulties in doing dialogue journal could be solved by giving more language skills input, doing peer correction, and encouraging autonomous learning. Keywords: Dialogue Journal, Use, Teach Writing.
