Rising crime, homicide, economic despair, infant mortality. The common narrative of the situation in the Northern Triangle nations of Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, points to these grim circumstances to explain the exodus of families leaving for America. But it is not the case that conditions have worsened there in recent years; the best available data show improvement in many socioeconomic measures.  This article draws upon the best sources from the Northern Triangle, Mexico, US, and international organizations. Socioeconomic studies and analysis by universities, policy groups, and government agencies from the region provide details on the day-to-day experiences of ordinary people, the realities of poverty, crime, and violence.  The conclusions from these studies do not always match common suppositions. Homicides are down, but El Salvador and Honduras remain two of the most dangerous countries in the world. In the Northern Triangle, economic growth has been above the regional average, while the percentage of families living in poverty in Guatemala is actually increasing as income distribution worsens. More Central American families are migrating to the USA than ever before, but far fewer total immigrants are coming to America as the immigration from Mexico has declined.  This article concludes with policy recommendations. Since the US economy is creating more jobs than entrants into the workforce. US immigration policies should be adjusted to match economic needs and must be changed to reflect its highest humanitarian values.

The minimum level of sufficiency (kifayah adna) for a wife guarantees her basic living maintenance in Islam. It is a level forwarded by some Hanafi scholars who considered it the bare minimum maintenance required to meet a wife’s basic needs. An adequate stipend for a wife’s maintenance secures her livelihood. This study interviews a group of mothers and judges. Analysis of the collected data reveals that determining what constitutes kifayah helps resolve various questions and uncertainties in judicial issues such as determining the minimum level of living in the community, over-maintenance issues, fasakh case claims due to a waiver of maintenance or inadequate livelihood and issues pertaining to polygamy. The paper concludes that determining the minimum level of kifayah and ensuring it is practised helps satisfy the basic needs of a wife and avoid her being subjected to harm. It is a clear manifestation of the maqasid al-shariah that seek to preserve life, intellect, religion, wealth and progeny. Its determination guarantees the wife a monthly stipend to ensure her needs are met. This requires periodic socioeconomic studies of society to ensure that the maintenance levels are adequate.

Abstract The Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) provides an international forum for the exchange of technical information on geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellite systems. In 2013, the CMGS established the Socioeconomic Benefits Tiger Team (SETT) to develop a credible methodology and common terminology for articulating the socioeconomic benefits of satellite observing systems, and to explore the most effective ways to communicate the benefits to decision makers and stakeholders. As part of its first years’ activities, the SETT gathered examples of socioeconomic studies across all member organizations. This article describes key elements of these studies, and identified eight key themes that are presented. We welcome additional collaborations to identify opportunities to incorporate socioeconomic best practices, integrate these into additional or subsequent phases of work on new instruments and satellites, and develop recommendations for the way forward for the broader meteorological community.

The central topic of this article is the social devaluation of domestic work, especially focusing on its affective dimension. The question of reproduction as well as the productive character of care-work is constantly neglected in many socioeconomic studies. This counts also for Marxist analyses. Following enquiries in European countries on how domestic work is sensed, how this impacts the people delivering this work, as well as how these feelings linger in spaces and are transferred within relations, the results are interpreted in the context of processes of feminization and the coloniality of labor. Special attention is given to the situation of undocumented migrant domestic workers. As conclusion to these observations some thoughts on formulating domestic workers’ rights along the lines of the politics of affect are elaborated.

A number of studies on biodiversity and ecosystem structure of the region were published during the last century. There have been no special socioeconomic studies of the region till now. The data should be collected mostly from different archives and statistical summaries. Biodiversity of the region has been formed over the centuries and is strongly dependent on socioeconomic factors.
