Evaluation of Methodology for Lightning Impulse Voltage Distribution over High-Voltage Windings of Inductive Voltage Transformers

Knowledge of lightning impulse (LI) voltage distribution over transformer windings during the design stage of the transformer is very important. Specific design differences in inductive voltage transformers make the transient analysis approach different to the approach to the power transformers. In this paper, a methodology for acquiring lightning impulse voltage distribution over high-voltage (HV) winding of inductive voltage transformers is presented and evaluated. Resistance, inductance, and capacitance matrices are calculated using the integral and boundary element methods (BEM) approach. Additionally, in order to improve the capacitance matrix solver, adaptive cross approximation (ACA) is applied. These parameters are then used to solve the equivalent circuit model in time domain. In order to evaluate the methodology, an experimental and numerical investigation of the layer discretisation, iron core influence, and accuracy of the proposed methodology is performed. The comparison of numerical results with measurements confirms the validity of the methodology.

Classical Casimir free energy for two Drude spheres of arbitrary radii: A plane-wave approach

We derive an exact analytic expression for the high-temperature limit of the Casimir interaction between two Drude spheres of arbitrary radii. Specifically, we determine the Casimir free energy by using the scattering approach in the plane-wave basis. Within a round-trip expansion, we are led to consider the combinatorics of certain partitions of the round trips. The relation between the Casimir free energy and the capacitance matrix of two spheres is discussed. Previously known results for the special cases of a sphere-plane geometry as well as two spheres of equal radii are recovered. An asymptotic expansion for small distances between the two spheres is determined and analytical expressions for the coefficients are given.

Study of coupling configurations of capacitive power transfer system with four metal plates

In this paper, possible coupling configurations of a four-plate capacitive power transfer system are studied by varying the combinations of its input and output ports. A voltage source is applied between two of the four plates, and a load is connected to the other two to form different circuit topologies. A mathematical model based on a 4 × 4 mutual capacitance matrix is established for equidistantly placed four identical metal plates. Based on the proposed model, four separate circuit topologies are identified and analysed in detail and described in a general form. The electric field distributions of the coupling configurations are simulated by ANSYS Maxwell. The theoretical modeling and analysis are then verified by a practical system, in which four aluminum plates of 300 mm × 300 mm are used and placed with a gap of 10 mm between adjacent plates. The experimental results show that the measured output voltage and power under the four coupling configurations are in good agreement with the theoretical results. It has found that the voltage gain is the highest when the two inner plates are connected to the source, and this coupling configuration also has the lowest leakage electric field.
