Relevance. Traumatic and ischemic injury of the limbs is accompanied by damage of the skeletal muscles and peripheral nerves of the limbs. The dynamics and consequences of ischemic lesions remain poorly understood and need to be corrected. Objective: using quantitative morphological and sonographic methods, to study the dynamics of skeletal muscle damage of the limb after traumatically induced ischemia with and without the injection of platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate, and adipose tissue fraction. Materials and Methods. In 3 experiments, rabbits were modeled with 6-hour limb ischemia by applying an elastic tourniquet. After compartment syndrome detection, based on the assessment of subfascial pressure, cell suspensions were injected into the leg muscles. Sonographic and histological examination of the muscles was performed on days 5, 15, and 30. The results of sonography and morphometry were evaluated by statistical methods. Results. The developed model of ischemia consists of 6-hour immobilization of the limb, on тwhich medical elastic tourniquets were imposing. The action of the tourniquets causes high subfascial pressure and necrosis of the superficial muscle groups of the lower third of the thigh and lower leg. According to sonography, the δ-entropy of damaged tissues on day 5 is reduced relative to the intact limb, as in the case of administration of bone marrow aspirate cells. On days 15 and 30, sonography showed no difference between the comparison groups. The dynamics of morphological features of limb tissue damage consist of necrosis of superficial muscle groups, atrophy in the middle layers, and almost intact deep muscle groups. Necrosis was replaced by scar tissue, the density of which increases 11-14 times, and does not differ in the period 5-30 days. The administration of platelet plasma, bone marrow aspirate, and adipose tissue fraction did not change the dynamics of fibrotic changes in ischemic damaged muscles. Muscle atrophy is accompanied by activation of endogenous repair of single muscle fibers, which tended to intensify after injection of bone marrow aspirate. The sciatic nerve of the injured limb was not structurally damaged according to the deep topography, while the nerves of the tibia develop degenerative changes from the 15th day.

Abstract Background In aging, muscle stiffness is considered as one of the factors associated with the reduction of force generation capability. There have been inconsistent findings on age-related alteration in the passive stiffness of quadriceps muscle in the female adults. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of aging on the shear moduli of the superficial muscle heads of the quadriceps and to explore its relationship with knee extension force. Methods Passive shear moduli of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) were measured at rest using shear wave elastography in 20 young and 20 senior female adults. Measurements were repeated at four knee joint positions, that is, 30°, 60°, 90°, and 105° of knee flexion. Maximal isometric voluntary knee extension force was assessed at 30°, 60°, and 90° of knee flexion. Results As per our findings, senior adults were determined to have significantly higher passive muscle shear moduli in the RF (by 34% – 68%; all p < 0.05) and the VL muscle heads (by 13%–16%, all p < 0.05) at and beyond 60° of knee flexion. Age-related increase in the VM was evident at 105° knee flexion (by11%, p = 0.020). The RF shear modulus was negatively correlated to the maximal isometric voluntary contraction force measured at 60° (r =  − 0.485, p = 0.030) in senior adults. Conclusions Senior female adults had greater passive stiffness at the superficial muscle heads of the quadriceps muscles when measured at long muscle length. Among the senior female adults, the passive stiffness of RF has been determined to have a negative association with the knee extensor force only at 60° knee flexion. No significant association was noted for other angles and muscles.

AbstractTrematode larvae (metacercariae) causing black spot disease occur frequently in gills, fins, skin and the superficial muscle layers of marine fish. Species within the genus Cryptocotyle Lühe, 1899 are frequently associated with this disease. Descriptions of the metacercarial stage are relatively limited and none has hitherto been reported from fish from the English Channel. The present study reports the morphological and molecular identifications of encysted black spot-inducing parasites from whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) caught respectively from the north coast of France (English Channel) and from Danish sea waters. Metacercariae were characterised morphologically based on microscopic observations and molecularly using Sanger sequencing of fragments of the mitochondrial cox1 gene and rDNA ITS region. Morphological data were compared with available data in the literature. Phylogenetic trees including reference sequences were built to confirm morphological and molecular identifications. This survey constitutes the first description of C. lingua metacercariae in the English Channel ecosystems.

We show that supine exercise causes a greater degree of muscle deoxygenation in both deep and superficial muscle and increases the spatial heterogeneity of muscle deoxygenation. Therefore, this study suggests that any O2 delivery gradient toward deep versus superficial muscle is insufficient to mitigate impairments in oxidative function in response to reduced whole muscle O2 delivery. More heterogeneous muscle deoxygenation is associated with slower V̇o2 kinetics.

Objective: This study was investigated the effects of dietary supplementation of Antrodia cinnamomea fermented product on modulation of antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and lipid metabolism in broilers.Methods: Functional compounds and in vitro antioxidant capacity were detected in wheat bran (WB) solid-state fermented by Antrodia cinnamomea for 16 days (FAC). In animal experiment, 400 d-old broiler chickens were allotted into 5 groups fed control diet, and control diet replaced with 5% WB, 10% WB, 5% FAC, and 10% FAC respectively. Growth performance, intestinal microflora, serum antioxidant enzymes and fatty acid profiles in pectoral superficial muscle were measured.Results: Pretreatment with hot water extracted fermented product significantly reduced chicken peripheral blood mononuclear cells death induced by lipopolysaccharide and 2,2′-Azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride. Birds received 5% and 10% FAC had higher weight gain than WB groups. Cecal coliform and lactic acid bacteria were diminished and increased respectively while diet replaced with FAC. For FAC supplemented groups, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased at 35 days only, with catalase elevated at 21 and 35 day. Regarding serum lipid parameters, 10% FAC replacement significantly reduced triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein level in chickens. For fatty acid composition in pectoral superficial muscle of 35-d-old chickens, 5% and 10% FAC inclusion had birds with significantly lower saturated fatty acids as compared with 10% WB group. Birds on the 5% FAC diet had a higher degree of unsaturation, followed by 10% FAC, control, 5% WB, and 10% WB.Conclusion: In conclusion, desirable intestinal microflora in chickens obtaining FAC may be attributed to the functional metabolites detected in final fermented product. Moreover, antioxidant effects observed in FAC were plausibly exerted in terms of improved antioxidant enzymes activities, increased unsaturated degree of fatty acids in chicken muscle and better weight gain in FAC inclusion groups, indicating that FAC possesses promising favorable mechanisms worthy to be developed.

Medium Definition Liposuction is an alternative liposuction approach, without the need of external energy device (such as LASER or VASER), that avoids the eventual stigmata of some cases of High Definition liposuction. This approach uncovers the abdominal muscle outlines by enhancing the superficial muscle anatomy and topography, creating an athletic, natural look. The ideal patient should have the Body Fat Index (BFI) of 18% or less with abdominal muscle hypertrophy. 50 patients underwent Medium Definition Liposuction (2016-2018) and were evaluated by the authors according Strasse Aesthetic Outcome Scale 1.

Abstract Background To report the case of a surgical-induced necrotizing sclertitis (SINS) following vitreoretinal retinal surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, successfully managed by superficial muscle temporal fascia grafting. Case presentation An 18-year-old teenage, with a history of a twenty-three gauges vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade forrhegmatogenous retinal detachment of the left eye presented two months after surgery with intense left ocular pain, decreased visual acuity to counting fingers and eye redness. Split lamp exam showed: conjunctival infiltration with silicone oil, circumferential sclera thinningpredominantly in the superonasal quadrant with ectasia of the underling uvea). The fundus examination showed an attached retina. Necrotizing scleritis was the retained diagnosis. Performed etiological assessment was negative.Surgical induced necrotizing scleritis was the final diagnosis. An immunosuppressive therapy based on general corticoids was started. With the immanent risk of globe perforation, superficial muscle temporal fascia grafting was performed to cover the necrotizing sclera.The patient did well postoperatively without sclera thinning or ectasia and the fascia grafting still intact without retraction after six months of follow up. Conclusion This is the first case in the literature thatused the superficial temporal muscle fascia as a graft for sclera reinforcement in SINS. Wepropose a new support to reinforce the deficient sclera.This graft must be associated with prompt immunosuppressive therapy at high doses.

Imaging techniques play a key role in the assessment of patients with the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can reveal muscle inflammation similarly to muscle scintigraphy and 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, but is also able to visualize findings of chronic muscle damage such as muscle atrophy or fat replacement. Ultrasonography has a more limited role because it can only depict the superficial muscle layers. Imaging findings are not specific to IIM, but in the appropriate clinical context they support the diagnosis. MRI is also useful to target biopsy to affected muscles, thus increasing biopsy yield. In addition, because different myopathies present with different patterns of muscle involvement, imaging studies can provide differential diagnostic clues. Finally, imaging studies—especially MRI—can be used to monitor the effects of treatment by serially evaluating changes in muscle inflammation and damage.

Muscle deoxygenation (i.e., deoxy[Hb + Mb]) during exercise assesses the matching of oxygen delivery (Q̇o2) to oxygen utilization (V̇o2). Until now limitations in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology did not permit discrimination of deoxy[Hb + Mb] between superficial and deep muscles. In humans, the deep quadriceps is more highly vascularized and oxidative than the superficial quadriceps. Using high-power time-resolved NIRS, we tested the hypothesis that deoxygenation of the deep quadriceps would be less than in superficial muscle during incremental cycling exercise in eight males. Pulmonary V̇o2 was measured and muscle deoxy[Hb + Mb] was determined in the superficial vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), and rectus femoris (RF-s) and the deep rectus femoris (RF-d). deoxy[Hb + Mb] in RF-d was significantly less than VL at 70% (67.2 ± 7.0 vs. 75.5 ± 10.7 μM) and 80% (71.4 ± 11.0 vs. 79.0 ± 15.4 μM) of peak work rate (WRpeak), but greater than VL and VM at WRpeak (87.7 ± 32.5 vs. 76.6 ± 17.5 and 75.1 ± 19.9 μM). RF-s was intermediate at WRpeak (82.6 ± 18.7 μM). Total hemoglobin and myoglobin concentration and tissue oxygen saturation were significantly greater in RF-d than RF-s throughout exercise. The slope of deoxy[Hb + Mb] increase (proportional to Q̇o2/V̇o2) in VL and VM slowed markedly above 70% WRpeak, whereas it became greater in RF-d. This divergent deoxygenation pattern may be due to a greater population of slow-twitch muscle fibers in the RF-d muscle and the differential recruitment profiles and vascular and metabolic control properties of specific fiber populations within superficial and deeper muscle regions.

AbstractGastrocnemius is a superficial muscle of the posterior compartment of leg. It usually arises by two heads- a medial and a lateral head. A third head of Gastrocnemius has been reported to occur in 2.9 - 5.5% of subjects. This anomaly has been implicated as a cause for popliteal vessel entrapment syndrome.Variations of the heads of origin of Gastrocnemius muscle were studied in 20 lower extremities of ten adult cadavers during routine Popliteal Fossa dissection at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry. An accessory third head of Gastrocnemius was found in four lower limbs (20% ). This third head originated along with the lateral head of Gastrocnemius.
