This study is to investigate the status of using rope in purse seine fisheries in Viet Nam based on surveyed data from 13 provinces/cities across country. Statistic data were taken randomly from 30 purse seine samples per each region of North, Middle, and South by pre-designed questionnaire with direct survey method of fishing gears combined with interview with the owners/captains. The results indicated that the initial constructing and annual replacing ropes of purse seine is mainly concentrated in the group of diameters from 10 - 20 mm. Up to 98% of Polypropylene (PP) material is used in Vietnamese purse seine. Float line and lead line are used the most ropes in purse seine. In purse seine fisheries, the annual additional rope is one quarter of the original amount of rope fitted. Purse seine in the Middle and the South is larger than that in the North of Viet Nam. The ratio of lengths between the float line and the lead line among the regions is different. The ratio of the main purse line with the lead line ranges from 1.1 to 1.75. Average life expectancy of main purse line is lowest in rope types of the purse seiners. The characteristics of the fishing grounds are different in these three regions, so the rope of purse seine is also different.

Discarding is a significant problem due to net damage and labour loss in trammel net fisheries. In this study, the effects of 15, 25, and 35 cm high cloth tarpaulin rigged between the lead line and the net were investigated in reducing the discard amount of trammel nets for red mullet (Mullus barbatus) in the south-eastern Black Sea. During the study, twenty fishing trips were carried out on-board a commercial vessel between May 11 and June 20, 2018. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the amount of discards between the commercial and experimental nets (P>0.05) However, cloth tarpaulin mounted nets (CTMN) were found to be significantly successful to reduce the amount of shore crab (Liocarcinus depurator) and the veined rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) (P<0.05). Although it is insignificant, a decline of capture was also observed in the amount of target species in CTMN compared to the commercial net (CN). Finally, the advantages and concerns of this gear modification, and potential reasons for the reduction of target and discard species are discussed.

Abstract Panoramic radiography is the most commonly used equipment in the dental field, but there is no comprehensive standard about how to evaluate the spatial resolution of panoramic radiography. In this study, panorama resolution phantoms were developed for evaluation of horizontal and vertical resolution reflecting unique characteristics of panoramic radiography. Four horizontal resolution phantoms of staircase shape were designed to obtain images of horizontal lead line pairs in a 52 mm width. Four vertical resolution phantoms with vertical lead line pairs placed at an oblique angle were also designed. A phantom stand was made. Three machines were evaluated twice by two oromaxillofacial radiologists. The horizontal lead line pairs were readable over the entire measured area at the values of 1.88, 2.32, and 2.58 lp/mm for all machines. A readable area of horizontal 3.19 lp/mm was observed in the lingual side. In the vertical resolution phantoms, it was possible to read a narrower range. By using the panorama resolution phantoms and phantom stand, it was possible to evaluate the resolution of a wide buccolingual width in four significant areas. By evaluating the resolution of the vertical and horizontal compartments separately, it was possible to gain a better understanding of the obtained images.

AbstractIn this study, a hydrographic map of a South Florida canal is prepared using RTK GPS (Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System) measurements combined with a hydrolite (single beam echo sounder). RTK GPS measurements are made using both single RTK and Network RTK systems. Digital sounding measurements taken by hydrolite are compared to manual lead line measurements. Single RTK and Network RTK results differed in the order of tenth of a foot accuracy for horizontal coordinates and for height measurements variations can go up to several tenths. Sounding results indicate a best-fit trend line with a slope of 0.993, and an R squared value of 0.972, demonstrating that hydrolite measurements and manually collected depths at this site are well correlated.
