A Proposed Method for Residual Citation Allocation Based on Citation Contexts’ Similarity

This article proposes an approach for allocating residual citations to scientific publications and demonstrating this proposed approach with a sample of biomedical publications. Residue citations (i.e., citations that are lost due to citation practices termed “Obliteration by Incorporation” and the “Palimpsestic Syndrome”) in consequent citations in the second, third or nth generations are then reconstituted. The proposed approach takes into account citation contexts (i.e., the contribution of a cited publication) for allocating residual citation. The proposed method for allocating residual citation is based on the similarity between the citation contexts of a publication and those of its nth generation citations in their n+1th generation citations. The proposed method was demonstrated using a sample with ten base articles and their five generations of citations, from which 5,272 citation context pairs were obtained. The proposed indirect citation weighting was compared with the existing cascading citation weighting method using one T-test. Statistical tests were also performed to understand the differences in the residual citations from one generation to the other. Like the cascading citation system, residual citations from articles to their generations of citations decreased as the number of generations increased. However, residue citations accrued to publications at all the generations were statistically different between the proposed residual citation and the cascading citation system. This study proposes a method for assessing scientific communication based on the contribution of scientific publications beyond the conventional direct citation.

Assessment of the different citation systems in the scientific publication of nursing authors from Spanish-speaking countries

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the distribution of citations of nursing authors in Spanish in Google Scholar as well as to compare the possible differences between this source and Web of Science and Scopus. Method: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study based on the citation systems offered by Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus. Results: Nursing researchers present a verified mean h-index of 7.82 in Academic Google. 74% of researchers belong to the academic field, compared to 26%, who are in health services. Most of them live in Spain (83%), followed by Colombia (12%), Mexico (4%), and Chile (1%). In Spain, the community with the largest number of researchers is Andalusia (41.5%), followed by Valencia (14.6%), and Madrid (7.3%). Conclusion: The Google Scholar citation system requires adjustments in its algorithm for selecting works and citations, and it should also allow some system of confirmation by authors. Nursing can have relatively low h-index values compared to other courses due to short research development.

Results of vitamin and mineral complexes’ use during pregnancy (literature review)

The purpose of this review was to study the effect of the intake of vitamin and mineral complexes (VMC) by pregnant women on obstetric and perinatal outcomes. To carry out the analysis, a search was carried out in foreign and domestic publications in the international citation system PubMed, published over the past 15 years. The results of the analysis showed that the use of VMC within 3 months before conception and during pregnancy reduces the risks of intrauterine abnormalities and improves the prognosis of postnatal development of offspring. In addition, taking VMC during gestation reduces the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnant women, preeclampsia, macrosomia, low birth weight, premature birth and postpartum hemorrhage. The use of multicomponent VMC has advantages over taking only folic acid and iron. Conclusion. Taking an VMC during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes. The use of complex drugs is especially important at the stage of preconception and early pregnancy, but it is advisable to continue until the end of pregnancy and lactation.

Design and Validation of a Rubric to Assess the Use of American Psychological Association Style in scientific articles

In this study, the researchers will explore the process of designing and validating a rubric to evaluate the adaptation of scientific articles in the format of the American Psychological Association (APA). The rubric will evaluate certain aspects of the APA format that allow authors, editors, and evaluators to decide if the scientific article is coherent with these rules. Overall, the rubric will concentrate on General Aspects of the article and on the Citation System. To do this, 10 articles that were published within 2012-2016 and included in the Journal Citation Report will be analyzed using technical expertise. After doing 5 pilot studies, the results showed the validity and the reliability of the instrument. Furthermore, the process showed the evidence of the possibilities of the rubric to contribute to uniform criteria that can be used as a didactic tool in different scenarios.

Research Commentary Survival of the Fittest Algorithm or the Novelest Algorithm?

Recently a paper was published which claims “harmony search is equivalent to evolution strategies and because the latter is not popular currently, the former has no future. Also, research community was misguided by the former’s disguised novelty.” This paper is written to rebut the original paper’s claims by saying 1) harmony search is different from evolution strategies because each has its own uniqueness, 2) performance, rather than novelty, is an algorithm’s survival factor, and 3) the original paper was biased to mislead into a predefined conclusion. Also, the shortcomings of current review system, citation system, and funding system are briefly mentioned.
