This study concerned the influence of the material strength, ductility and impact energy and the relationship of the broken section profile vs. ductile transition brittle where the steel material was treated under different tempering temperature and hardness. Generally after the steel materials, 10B35 coil wire materials which was generally applied to form screws, was treated by quenching and tempering, its hardness ranged from HRC30 to HRC45. The results showed that the elongation rate beyond 20.4% would be proportional to the impact energy with linear relation, but with reverse proportion to the hardness value. The brittle-tough point of the hardness was set around HRC37 after heat treatment in order to balance the strength and the toughness. In addition, the coil wire materials were analyzed from broken section materials showing good toughness; this represented that the area of the cross section radiation layer due to ductile fracture would largely increase. On the contrary, the wire material test fragment with bad toughness represented that the area of the shear layer due to brittle fracture would largely increase as well. As to that material, if its hardness was greater than or equal to HRC37, that material would have an excellent turning danger from transition. At the same time, when the tempering temperature of the wire steel material was set under 4600C and its corresponding central hardness was about HRC37, the distance between two cementite phase layers suddenly increased. This result leaded to the reason why the wire material test fragment was turned into brittleness from ductility. Therefore, when the fastener was manufactured under tempering treatment, avoiding the tempering brittleness temperature range was necessary.

23 female undergraduate students ( M = 20 yr., 10 mo., SD = 15 mo.) were given a word-fragment completion task, containing a study and nonstudy list. In the present study, the effect of orthographic familiarity (e.g., script type) of a test item on a word-fragment completion task was examined. The script types of word stimuli (Katakana and Hiragana) were manipulated between a study and test phase. Priming effect was greater when the script type was the same between a study and test phase than in the cross-script condition. Further, even if the script type of word stimulus was different between study and test phases, a significant priming effect was obtained when the test fragment was orthographically familiar. These results suggested that not only the consistency of the perceptual feature of the stimulus word between study and test phases, but also orthographic familiarity of the stimulus word in the test phase facilitated priming effect in a word-fragment completion test.

AbstractThe centromere is essential for proper segregation and inheritance of genetic information. Centromeres are generally regulated to occur exactly once per chromosome; failure to do so leads to chromosome loss or damage and loss of linked genetic material. The mechanism for faithful regulation of centromere activity and number is unknown. The presence of ectopic centromeres (neocentromeres) has allowed us to probe the requirements and characteristics of centromere activation, maintenance, and structure. We utilized chromosome derivatives that placed a 290-kilobase “test segment” in three different contexts within the Drosophila melanogaster genome—immediately adjacent to (1) centromeric chromatin, (2) centric heterochromatin, or (3) euchromatin. Using irradiation mutagenesis, we freed this test segment from the source chromosome and genetically assayed whether the liberated “test fragment” exhibited centromere activity. We observed that this test fragment behaved differently with respect to centromere activity when liberated from different chromosomal contexts, despite an apparent sequence identity. Test segments juxtaposed to an active centromere produced fragments with neocentromere activity, whereas test segments far from centromeres did not. Once established, neocentromere activity was stable. The imposition of neocentromere activity on juxtaposed DNA supports the hypothesis that centromere activity and identity is capable of spreading and is regulated epigenetically.

1. Four polypeptide fragments, obtained by cyanogen bromide treatment of the protein flagellin from Salmonella adelaide, were tested for their antigenic activity by using them as inhibitors in three different assays: bacterial immobilization, haemagglutination of sensitized erythrocytes and quantitative micro precipitation. Immunodiffusion studies were also performed on the protein fragments. 2. Cleavage of the flagellin molecule in this way gave no detectable loss of antigenic determinants. Fragment A (mol.wt. 18000), the largest of the polypeptides, contained all the antigenic specificities present on flagellin that were recognized by the antisera used. In one test, fragment B (mol.wt. 12000) also contained antigenic activity to an extent not easily explainable by contamination with fragment A. Fragments C (mol.wt. 5500) and D (mol.wt. 4500) appeared to be antigenically inactive.
