Broad scope of attention results in better temporal resolution: Evidence from a temporal order judgment study

The nature of spatiotemporal interactions in visual perception due to modulations of attention is still not well understood. Transient shifts of attention have been shown to induce a trade-off in spatiotemporal acuities at the cued location. Attention also can be varied in terms of scope and the evidence for the effects of scope on the spatiotemporal resolution for coupling or trade-offs have been equivocal. We predicted that scaling or changing the scope of attention would rather result in a spatiotemporal trade-off based on the complementary spatial and temporal frequency properties of the magnocellular and parvocellular channels. We manipulated the scope of attention by asking participants to perform a global or local target detection task with hierarchical stimuli. In addition, participants performed a temporal order judgment task with two discs presented alongside the hierarchical stimuli. We found higher temporal sensitivity with broad scope of attention or global processing compared to narrow scope of attention or local processing. The results provide evidence for a spatiotemporal processing trade-off when attention is scaled spatially. This result throws doubt on a general coupling or resource metaphor explanation irrespective of the spatial or temporal nature of the tasks. The results indicate the further need for carefully investigating the spatial and temporal properties of attention and its effect on spatiotemporal processing at different scales.

Bidirectional propagation of low frequency oscillations over the human hippocampal surface

The hippocampus is diversely interconnected with other brain systems along its axis. Cycles of theta-frequency activity are believed to propagate from the septal to temporal pole, yet it is unclear how this one-way route supports the flexible cognitive capacities of this structure. We leveraged novel thin-film microgrid arrays conformed to the human hippocampal surface to track neural activity two-dimensionally in vivo. All oscillation frequencies identified between 1–15 Hz propagated across the tissue. Moreover, they dynamically shifted between two roughly opposite directions oblique to the long axis. This predominant propagation axis was mirrored across participants, hemispheres, and consciousness states. Directionality was modulated in a participant who performed a behavioral task, and it could be predicted by wave amplitude topography over the hippocampal surface. Our results show that propagation directions may thus represent distinct meso-scale network computations, operating along versatile spatiotemporal processing routes across the hippocampal body.

Spatiotemporal Processing of Bimodal Odor Lateralization in the Brain Using Electroencephalography Microstates and Source Localization

The neuronal cascade related to the perception of either purely olfactory or trigeminal airborne chemicals has been investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analyses and source localization. However, most airborne chemicals are bimodal in nature, encompassing both properties. Moreover, there is an ongoing debate regarding whether there is one dominant nostril, and this could be investigated using these multichannel EEG methods. In this study, 18 right-handed, healthy participants (13 females) were monorhinally stimulated using an olfactometer with the bimodal component acetic acid during continuous EEG recording. Participants indicated the side of stimulation, the confidence in their decision, and rated the strength of the evoked perception. EEG microstate clustering determined four distinct maps and successive backfitting procedures, and source estimations revealed a network that evolved from visual-spatial processing areas to brain areas related to basic olfactory and trigeminal sensations (e.g., thalamus, cingulate cortex, insula, parahippocampal, and pre-/post-central gyri) and resulted in activation of areas involved in multisensory integration (e.g., frontal-temporal areas). Right-nostril stimulation was associated with faster microstate transition and longer involvement of the superior temporal gyrus, which was previously linked to chemical localization and provides evidence for a potential nostril dominance. The results describe for the first time the processing cascade of bimodal odor perception using microstate analyses and demonstrate its feasibility to further investigate potential nostril dominance.

An Analysis of Entropy-Based Eye Movement Events Detection

Analysis of eye movement has attracted a lot of attention recently in terms of exploring areas of people’s interest, cognitive ability, and skills. The basis for eye movement usage in these applications is the detection of its main components—namely, fixations and saccades, which facilitate understanding of the spatiotemporal processing of a visual scene. In the presented research, a novel approach for the detection of eye movement events is proposed, based on the concept of approximate entropy. By using the multiresolution time-domain scheme, a structure entitled the Multilevel Entropy Map was developed for this purpose. The dataset was collected during an experiment utilizing the “jumping point” paradigm. Eye positions were registered with a 1000 Hz sampling rate. For event detection, the knn classifier was applied. The best classification efficiency in recognizing the saccadic period ranged from 83% to 94%, depending on the sample size used. These promising outcomes suggest that the proposed solution may be used as a potential method for describing eye movement dynamics.
