Compounds based on new cyanide cluster anions [{Mo6I8}(CN)6]2–, trans-[{Mo6I8}(CN)4(MeO)2]2– and trans-[{W6I8}(CN)2(MeO)4]2− were synthesized using mechanochemical or solvothermal synthesis. The crystal and electronic structures as well as spectroscopic properties of the anions were investigated. It was found that the new compounds exhibit red luminescence upon excitation by UV light in the solid state and solutions, as other cluster complexes based on {Mo6I8}4+ and {W6I8}4+ cores do. The compounds can be recrystallized from aqueous methanol solutions; besides this, it was shown using NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy that anions did not undergo hydrolysis in the solutions for a long time. These facts indicate that hydrolytic stabilization of {Mo6I8} and {W6I8} cluster cores can be achieved by coordination of cyanide ligands.

The synthesis and characterisation of Ti–Zr mixed oxides containing 1 to 10 wt.% of Zr is herein reported. In addition, the samples were tested as photocatalysts in the generation of hydrogen from aqueous methanol solutions. The solids were prepared by sol-gel and then characterised by X-ray diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, physisorption of nitrogen, scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopies. The results show the presence of anatase as a predominant structure and the oxides present larger specific surface areas than that of pure titania. A maximum value of 168 m2/g was determined for the sample with 5 wt.% of zirconium. The calculated band gap energies varied from 3.05 to 3.15 eV. It was observed that the greater the zirconium content in the solid, the higher the generation rate of hydrogen when testing the Ti–Zr solids as photocatalysts. Under our experimental conditions, the best catalyst, Ti–Zr oxide with 10 wt. % Zr, showed a production rate of 2100 μmol of H2/h which was about tenfold higher than that observed for pure titania.

AbstractCarbon C^+ ions formed in a mass-spectrometric electrospray source with controlled in-source fragmentation and atomization interface have been observed for the first time. The measurements were performed in a special MI-20 LowMass mass spectrometer (MS-Bio LLC) using aqueous methanol solutions of lithium and beryllium salts. The peak of C^+ ions was substantially broadened as compared to the peaks of metal ions. A model is proposed that explains the formation of C^+ ions due to charge exchange immediately at the high-vacuum boundary near the skimmer output.
