Abstract The following three papers were presented in September 2019 at the Simposio Psicanalise e Envelhecimento convened by the Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise de Rio de Janeiro. They are the result of the internal production of the Travesía Foundation of Buenos Aires, institution devoted to the meta-psychological study of midlife transition and crisis since 1989. We would like to thank the SBPRJ for its invitation and the cordiality with which we were received. The fact that the three workshops were written especially for the Symposium led us to select narratives from Brazilian authors so that our words would resonate in the auditorium as something familiar. Likewise, we have allowed ourselves to disseminate psychoanalytic understanding towards other ends, contributing to the universality of the discipline. Furthermore, the workshops have been written in a way that makes previous readings of the narratives under consideration unnecessary.

Background: South Asian immigrant women make up the largest visible minority in Canada, where visible minorities include persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour, and approximately half of these women are above the age of 35. Few studies have investigated the factors that impact the midlife transition for these women. This study aims to identify the facilitators and barriers experienced by South Asian immigrant women during the midlife transition. Methods: Two focus groups and ten one-on-one interviews about the midlife transition were held with South Asian first-generation immigrant women in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada; discussions were analyzed thematically. Findings: Personal facilitators to the midlife transition included being employed and possessing adequate life skills. Personal barriers consisted of financial strain, overwhelming demands, and limited life skills. Familial facilitators were stable financial status and support. Familial barriers included limited understanding and support and high expectations. Community facilitators included a close social circle and adequate healthcare. Community barriers were limited social support and cultural expectations. Fair and respectful societies were a facilitator, whereas inadequate policy support and acculturative stress were societal barriers. An environmental barrier was the colder Canadian climate. Discussion: Employment and education programs for South Asian immigrant women need to be prioritized to help them integrate into society. Family-centred assessment and education can improve familial support. Communities need to foster peer support groups and culturally sensitive healthcare. Social and employment policies should accommodate the midlife transition. Conclusions: South Asian immigrant women experience unique facilitators and barriers to their midlife transition that should be considered by healthcare providers, policymakers and society to support them.

This article explores the use of The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) to support 8 women as they struggled with the challenges of midlife. Unconscious forces can reach a critical mass at midlife and the Self is summoned to search for a new psychological identity. Case study data from 49 standard GIM sessions conducted over a 22 month period was pooled, analysed and reviewed for commonalities in imagery. This was a convenience sample based on clients attending a private practice in Sydney, Australia. The examination of the reported imagery discovered a number of emergent themes: 1) Land of death and darkness; 2) Betwixt and Between 3) Encounters with the Shadow, Archetypes and Helpers; 4) The Body and 5) Looking Forward. Keywords: midlife, guided imagery and music (Bonny Method)German An der Kreuzungen in der Mitte des Lebens: auf der Reise des Midlife-Übergangsmit Guided Imagery and Music  Louise Terry-ClarkDieser Artikel untersucht die Arbeit mit der Bonny Methode der Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM), 8 Frauen während ihrer Kämpfe in der Midlife-Krise zu unterstützen. In dieser Zeit können unbewusste Kräfte ein kritisches Maß erreichen, und das Selbst ist gefordert, eine neue psychologische Identität zu suchen. Abstract The movement of the baby boomers into the middle ages made the 45-65 age cohort the largest and the fastest growing segment of population in the first decade of the 21st century. This demographic expansion will have multiple consequences for ageing society. This paper aimed to provide an overview on biology of midlife transition. Physical characteristics, midlife-specific morbidity and mortality were described with focus to sexual dimorphism in physique and gender gap in mortality and morbidity. These characteristics made midlife a separate and unique stage of life. In-depth knowledge of this life stage may be useful in identifying and solving problems of ageing individuals and population.
