Energy Storage as an Equity Asset

Purpose of Review This review offers a discussion on how energy storage deployment advances equitable outcomes for the power system. It catalogues the four tenets of the energy justice concept—distributive, recognition, procedural, and restorative—and shows how they relate to inequities in energy affordability, availability, due process, sustainability, and responsibility. Recent Findings Energy storage systems have been deployed to support grid reliability and renewable resource integration, but there is additional emerging value in considering the connections between energy storage applications and equity challenges in the power system. Through a thorough review of the energy justice and energy transitions literature, this paper offers the equity dimensions of storage project design and implementations. Summary Emerging energy programs and projects are utilizing energy storage in pursuit of improved equity outcomes. Future research and policy design should integrate energy justice principles to align storage penetration with desired equity outcomes.

Load Control by Demand Side Management to Support Grid Stability in Building Clusters

Increasing numbers of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps in existing building clusters can lead to an overload of the associated electric grid substations. Based on a multi-agent-based simulation of three building cluster types the impact of building flexibility in regard to the residual substation load is studied. Each building announces its available flexibility, e.g., “heat pump can be switched off/on”. A cluster master coordinator evaluates the incoming offers and decides which offers are accepted in regard to the substation’s capacity utilization. The goal is to honour the substation’s limit by shifting the residual load. This paper presents results from three typical urban building clusters for different penetration scenarios in regard to heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric vehicles. It is shown that in the studied building clusters a high penetration of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems can violate the existing substation’s limits, regardless of the efforts by the master coordinator. Batteries of typical capacities cannot reduce the peak residual load. The load shifting options of the master coordinator are limited.

Research on Key Technologies and Scenario Application of Emerging Business under the Energy Internet

Under the energy Internet situation, the market-oriented competition of emerging power grid businesses is increasingly intensified. The traditional single-type information construction system and model cannot adapt to the market. Therefore, this paper proposes a shared service architecture technology for China and Taiwan. This article introduces the goals and architectural ideas of the China-Taiwan shared service architecture and proposes a five-step method to sort out shared service centers. When the enterprise implements the China-Taiwan shared service center architecture, it proposes the implementation strategy of minimizing closed-loop principles and staged iterations, which are shown through research and application., China-Taiwan shared service architecture can support grid companies to quickly respond to the needs of emerging power business markets, and play an IT support role for grid companies in the transformation process.
