On the Description of Cityscape in Novels Written by Zhang Ailing (Eileen Chang)

Zhang Ailing captures and describes various cityscapes with fierce and exquisite style. These “-scapes” not only exist as the carrier of urban civilization, but also demonstrate the looks of Shanghai’s people from all walks of life. The “-scapes” represented by apparels entail pessimistic life philosophy and connotate the emotional experience and fate of characters. Architectures, as time-markers, are shaped in the macro background of the era sensitively and organically. As for sounds, they can not only strengthen the daily space constructed by Zhang Ailing because of their inherent natural attributes, but also vividly depict the living things in the form of hearing. All kinds of “-scapes”, such as apparels, architectures, and sounds, whether fleeting or continuous, have been polished into an indispensable form in Zhang Ailing's urban writing. They are scattered all over the city and bear the unique literary significance organically and completely.

Wuthering Heights and Kleist's Novellen: Rousseauian Nature, Spontaneous Love, Infancy and the Performative Subversion of the Law

This article analyses the numerous thematic similarities between Wuthering Heights and Heinrich von Kleist’s Novellen, especially “Der Findling”. I justify this seemingly unconventional comparison on the basis that both Kleist and Emily Brontë were deeply influenced by Rousseau’s works and by his novel, Julie, ou, laNouvelle Héloïse (1761). The works of both authors share a typically Rousseauian theme: a hostility toward urban civilization and a strong intimacy with nature. This theme is loaded with ideological force and is present in at least four subthemes: the communion with nature, natural childhood, the nature of spontaneous love and the parodic reiteration of the normative community. Thus, although there is no evidence of Brontë’s direct knowledge of Kleist’s work, I suggest that their shared recourse to a common precursor may account for the uncanny similarity between Kleist’s Novellen and Wuthering Heights.

The Emergence and Formation of a Proto-Urban Civilization in Azerbaijan: Certain Issues in the Transition to Class Society

В статье освещаются некоторые актуальные вопросы, связанные с раннегородской культурой. Сложность проблемы заключается в отсутствии ранних письменных источников. Поэтому для освещения темы привлечены археологические материалы. Особое внимание уделено возникновению зачатков ранних поселений городского типа, истокам протогородской культуры. На ряде памятников бронзового века в Азербайджане зафиксированы признаки начальной стадии раннегородской цивилизации. Выявленные факты позволили выдвинуть гипотезы о причине и предпосылках формирования раннегородских центров — предвестников первых классовых обществ. Выделены основные критерии поселений раннегородского типа: их площадь и структура, наличие оборонительных сооружений, численность и плотность населения. Прослеживается уровень развития ремесленного производства в этих поселениях и ряд других аспектов. Впервые обосновывается тезис о том, что почти все главные культурные ценности, характерные для передовых центров Древнего Востока, были заимствованы населением Южного Кавказа. В рамках изучаемой темы рассмотрены величественные курганные памятники позднего бронзового века Карабаха. Идея связи элитных погребений с раннегородскими центрами основана на том, что только могущественные главы крупных племенных союзов и ранних классовых обществ могли претендовать на такие грандиозные погребальные сооружения.
