In this paper, the bifurcation trees of periodic motions in a parametrically excited pendulum are studied using discrete implicit maps. From the discrete maps, mapping structures are developed for periodic motions in such a parametric pendulum. Analytical bifurcation trees of periodic motions to chaos are developed through the nonlinear algebraic equations of such implicit maps in the specific mapping structures. The corresponding stability and bifurcation analysis of periodic motions is carried out. Finally, numerical results of periodic motions are presented. Many new periodic motions in the parametrically excited pendulum are discovered.

In this paper, the bifurcation trees of a periodically excited pendulum are investigated. Implicit discrete maps for such a pendulum are developed to construct discrete mapping structures. Bifurcation trees of the corresponding periodic motions are predicted semi-analytically through the discrete mapping structure. The corresponding stability and bifurcation analysis are carried out through eigenvalue analysis. Finally, numerical illustrations of various periodic motions are given to verify the analytical prediction. The accurate periodic motions in the periodically forced pendulum are predicted for the first time through the implicit mapping systems, and the corresponding bifurcation trees of periodic motion to chaos are obtained.

In this paper, the bifurcation trees of period-1 motions to chaos are presented in a periodically driven pendulum. Discrete implicit maps are obtained through a mid-time scheme. Using these discrete maps, mapping structures are developed to describe different types of motions. Analytical bifurcation trees of periodic motions to chaos are obtained through the nonlinear algebraic equations of such implicit maps. Eigenvalue analysis is carried out for stability and bifurcation analysis of the periodic motions. Finally, numerical simulation results of various periodic motions are illustrated in verification to the analytical prediction. Harmonic amplitude characteristics are also be presented.

It is not easy to find periodic motions to chaos in a pendulum system even though the periodically forced pendulum is one of the simplest nonlinear systems. However, the inherent complex dynamics of the periodically forced pendulum is much beyond our imaginations through the traditional approach of linear dynamical systems. Until now, we did not know complex motions of pendulum yet. What are the mechanism and mathematics of such complex motions in the pendulum? The results presented herein give a new view of complex motions in the periodically forced pendulum. Thus, in this paper, periodic motions to chaos in a periodically forced pendulum are predicted analytically by a semi-analytical method. The method is based on discretization of differential equations of the dynamical system to obtain implicit maps. Using the implicit maps, mapping structures for specific periodic motions are developed, and the corresponding periodic motions can be predicted analytically through such mapping structures. Analytical bifurcation trees of periodic motions to chaos are obtained, and the corresponding stability and bifurcation analysis of periodic motions to chaos are carried out by eigenvalue analysis. From the analytical prediction of periodic motions to chaos, the corresponding frequency-amplitude characteristics are obtained for a better understanding of motions’ complexity in the periodically forced pendulum. Finally, numerical simulations of selected periodic motions are illustrated. The nontravelable and travelable periodic motions on the bifurcation trees are discovered. Through this investigation, the periodic motions to chaos in the periodically forced pendulums can be understood further. Based on the perturbation method, one cannot achieve the adequate solutions presented herein for periodic motions to chaos in the periodically forced pendulum.

In this paper, analytical solutions for period-[Formula: see text] motions in a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) nonlinear oscillator are developed through the finite Fourier series. From the finite Fourier series transformation, the dynamical system of coefficients of the finite Fourier series is developed. From such a dynamical system, the solutions of period-[Formula: see text] motions are obtained and the corresponding stability and bifurcation analyses of period-[Formula: see text] motions are carried out. Analytical bifurcation trees of period-1 motions to chaos are presented. Displacements, velocities and trajectories of periodic motions in the 2-DOF nonlinear oscillator are used to illustrate motion complexity, and harmonic amplitude spectrums give harmonic effects on periodic motions of the 2-DOF nonlinear oscillator.

In this paper, analytical solutions for period-m motions in a buckled, nonlinear Jeffcott rotor system are obtained. This nonlinear Jeffcott rotor system with two-degrees of freedom is excited periodically from the rotor eccentricity. The analytical solutions of period-m solutions are developed, and the corresponding stability and bifurcation are also analyzed by eigenvalue analysis. Analytical bifurcation trees of period-1 motions to chaos are presented. The Hopf bifurcations of periodic motions cause not only the bifurcation tree but quasi-periodic motions. The quasi-periodic motion can be stable or unstable. Displacement orbits of periodic motions in the buckled, nonlinear Jeffcott rotor systems are illustrated, and harmonic amplitude spectrums are presented for harmonic effects on periodic motions of the nonlinear rotor. Coexisting periodic motions exist in such a buckled nonlinear Jeffcott rotor.

In this paper, periodic motions in a periodically excited, Duffing oscillator with a time-delayed displacement are investigated through the Fourier series, and the stability and bifurcation of such periodic motions are discussed through eigenvalue analysis. The time-delayed displacement is from the feedback control of displacement. The analytical bifurcation trees of period-1 motions to chaos in the time-delayed Duffing oscillator are presented through asymmetric period-1 to period-4 motions. Stable and unstable periodic motions are illustrated through numerical and analytical solutions. From numerical illustrations, the analytical solutions of stable and unstable period-m motions are relatively accurate with AN/m < 10-6 compared to numerical solutions. From such analytical solutions, any complicated solutions of period-m motions can be obtained for any prescribed accuracy. Because time-delay may cause discontinuity, the appropriate time-delay inputs (or initial conditions) in the initial time-delay interval should satisfy the analytical solution of periodic motions in the time-delayed dynamical systems. Otherwise, periodic motions in such a time-delayed system cannot be obtained directly.

In this paper, the analytical methods for approximate solutions of periodic motions to chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems are reviewed. Briefly discussed are the traditional analytical methods including the Lagrange stand form, perturbation methods, and method of averaging. A brief literature survey of approximate methods in application is completed, and the weakness of current existing approximate methods is also discussed. Based on the generalized harmonic balance, the analytical solutions of periodic motions in nonlinear dynamical systems with/without time-delay are reviewed, and the analytical solutions for period-m motion to quasi-periodic motion are discussed. The analytical bifurcation trees of period-1 motion to chaos are presented as an application.
