This research paper tends to have an insight into the dynamics of cam and tappet of diesel engine which is supposed to work continuously for a longer period under huge variable loads to operate the valves of an internal combustion engine. The dynamics of valve gear train is so elemental in the due functioning of an engine. In this research, the analysis of five-order polynomial cam has been done to find the profile of displacement, velocity, acceleration and jerk for the suitability of diesel engines. The MATLAB software has been used as the vital aid in this analysis. This insight would sure be helpful in improving the mechanism of cam profile generation leading to betterment of camshaft design so as to increase the overall efficiency of the engine.

Abstract In the paper results of studies that aim was to develop a diagnostic method for high-speed marine diesel engines are presented. Polish Navy is operating significant number of engines of this type also on board of submarines. Engines of this type do not have indicator valves, which complicates the assessment of combustion process and their technical condition. Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia for years has been developing methods of diagnosing marine internal combustion engines. In recent years, a diagnostic method for high-speed marine diesel engines based on the analysis of envelope of vibration accelerations generated by the valve gear mechanism and fuel system has been developed. Some tests results made on Mercedes-Maybach MB820 engines used on Kobben class submarines are presented in the paper.

In this paper, taking the high-power low-speed diesel engine as a study object, aiming at the key components' reliability analysis, a series of methods is proposed based on the finite element analysis. That is, the strength and fatigue analysis of the engine's body, the bending and torsion fatigue analysis of the crankshaft, the thermal fatigue and mechanical fatigue analysis of the cylinder head-piston, the wear analysis of the valve-seat, the structural-thermal coupling analysis and the other methods. The dynamics test system of the valve gear is built to provide the technical preparation for optimizing the diesel engine's structure.
