Abstract Electromagnetic radiation (ER) emitted by mobile phones and other modern devices has potentially harmful effects on ocular tissue. Their effects on the eye surface and tear film are little known so far. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of ER emitted by the phone mobile on the tear film. For this study, we selected a total of 50 subjects, young, healthy, without chronic treatment, who are not contact lens wearers and who have no history of ophthalmic surgery. Schirmer I test, tear pH and tear ferning test (TFT) were performed on all subjects before (“-pre”) being exposed to ER emitted by the mobile phone and after (“-post”) exposure for 5 minutes, the pH and TFT of the tears were performed. Following the analysis of the obtained results, we found that there are significant changes in tear quality and increased tear pH, which over time can lead to tear film instability, damage to the eye surface and the appearance of dry eye syndrome.

Abstract Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial ocular surface disease. The commonest treatment is artificial tears. A novel artificial tears is urgently required to treat DED pathophysiologically, more than symptoms relief. In this study, a novel artificial tears with highly purified recombinant human lysozyme (rhLYZ), high homologous with natural tear, was obtained for DED treatment on a established rabbit DED model. 36 models were divided into 6 groups (n = 6), and treated with different concentration of novel artificial tears 180µl of drops daily, continuously for 4 weeks. To evaluate pathophysiologic therapeutic effect of the novel artificial tears, rabbit eyes were performed to the schirmer I test, tear ferning test, and corneal fluorescein staining test in 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks post-administration, respectively. The sacrificed models' corneas in 4 weeks were performed by pathological section staining. In the project, the quality of the artificial tears including rhLYZ was up to the quality standards of pharmacopoeia. RhLYZ eye drops, especially in the medium (0.15% of rhLYZ) and the high(0.30% of rhLYZ) concentration, enable to improve dry eye symptoms effectively, benefit to anti-inflammatory function and promote corneal repair. The novel artificial tears is a promising pathophysiological therapeutic agent in DED treatment.

Background. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a rare ocular surface inflammatory disease that affects mainly boys in the first decade of life. Clinical observations show that it generally regresses spontaneously with the onset of puberty, but therapeutic measures must be taken before then to control the course of the disease. Purpose. To evaluate the role of the lacrimal mucous component in VKC patients and compare tear ferning test (TFT) modifications, MUC5AC levels in tears, and density of conjunctival goblet cells to clinical characteristics before and after treatment with cyclosporine A (CY) in eye drops. Methods. Forty-seven patients affected by VKC and 30 healthy subjects aged between 3 and 16 years of life were enrolled. All individuals were submitted to complete eye examination and skin prick test (SPT) for the most common allergens. Then, they were subjected to collection of the tears and to impression cytology to evaluate TFT, MUC5AC levels, and conjunctival goblet cell density, before and after treatment with CY in eye drops. Results. Comparing the VKC group vs. the control group at baseline, a significant alteration in the degree of the ferns was found, indicating a pathological condition of the lacrimal mucous layer. In addition, an increased number of goblet cells were observed in the patients. The concentration of lacrimal secretory mucins (MUC5AC) did not show significant differences between the 2 groups. Patients treated with CY have reported improvements of some signs and symptoms of disease activity, including TFT, and a tendency of conjunctival goblet cell density to normalise. Conclusions. The results obtained demonstrated for the first time a significant alteration of the lacrimal mucin component evaluated in the VKC group, and an improvement of the latter after CY therapy.
