Development of Flood Defense Alternaives for the Beach of Deir El Balah Camp, Palestine

The development along the coastal zone has led to the host of problems such as erosion, siltation, flooding, loss of coastal resources and the destruction of the fragile marine habitats. The erosion threatens the coastal zone, which affects people's economic, tourist, and recreational life. The main reason of the erosion is due to Khan Younis breakwater and the sea waves working on empty the beachy sand, thereby flooding and scouring the area as it ebbs and removing part of the unconsolidated sand. This study uses Geographic Information System to detect changes in the coastline along Deir El Balah coast during the 1972–2020 period. Shoreline change rates in the form of erosion and accretion patterns are quantified. In addition, four alternatives are proposed to to mitigate the current problems raised by repeated flooding and erosion through reefballs, cubes, geotubes and seawalls and analyze their impacts on coastal protection to provide the best possible mitigations in environmental, economical and engineering terms. Multi criteria analysis is used to assess the alternatives with respect to criteria that capture the key dimensions of the selection process. Multi criteria have been selected and addressed the most important factors when planning, designing, financing, and implementing coastal protection measures. Based on the analysis, the best alternative of three-row reefballs submerged breakwaters is recommended.

OPERAÇÃO CAST LEAD

O objetivo desse artigo consiste em observar o trabalho do jornalista e quadrinista estadunidense Joe Sacco, intitulado Notas sobre Gaza. Nesse trabalho, o autor, por meio de várias entrevistas tenta rememorar os acontecimentos nas aldeias de Khan Younis e Rafah, ambas na Faixa de Gaza, acerca do massacre de novembro de 1956, diante dos litígios que darão início à Guerra de Suez de 1956. No entanto, além de representar a memória dos palestinos que vivenciaram os acontecimentos de 1956, o trabalho de Sacco entrecruza com os acontecimentos que condizem com o período de produção de seu trabalho (2002-2009). Nesse artigo, nossa atenção estará voltada para a Operação Cast Lead, que aconteceu entre o final de 2008 e início de 2009. Para isso, utilizaremos como base teórica o conceito de representações do historiador francês Roger Chartier a fim de analisarmos os sistemas de representações que estavam sendo produzidos concomitante ao período de produção de Notas sobre Gaza.

Notas al Pie de Gaza (Joe Sacco): pensando la identificación como posibilidad ética

Notas al pie de Gaza (2009) es una novela gráfica del artista Joe Sacco en la que se retoma el conflicto palestino-israelí ya tratado en Palestina: En la Franja de Gaza (2004). En esta obra se abocará a la investigación de dos matanzas cometidas el año 1956 en territorio palestino. (Khan Younis y Rafah). En este trabajo nos centraremos en el controvertido final de la novela, en la que Sacco, mediante una notable técnica gráfica, obliga al lector a convertirse en una de las víctimas de la matanza de Rafah. ¿Es esta técnica válida o éticamente cuestionable? Para contestar a esta pregunta buscaremos orientación mediante conceptos descriptivos de Dominick LaCapra y de Judith Butler. Este ejercicio teórico previo nos permitirá retomar una evaluación crítica más serena y exacta

Constructing an Instrument for Measuring the Selective Visual Attention of Basic-Stage Students in Gaza and Verifying its Psychometric Characteristics

The research aims at constructing an instrument for measuring the selective visual attention of basic education students in Gaza, and verifying its validity and reliability. The research sample consisted of 200 grade ten students in Khan Younis (for the academic year, 2018 -2019). The evidence of constructive validity and the factorial validity of the instrument were investigated. Results of the predictive factorial analysis showed that the three tasks of the instrument covered a single potential factor namely selective visual attention. All slides of the selective visual attention tasks have achieved statistically significant correlations with the overall scores of the instrument. The content of the slides was also validated in relation to the instrument. The instrument reliability was also checked with the alpha coefficient for the final form of the instrument as a whole (0,962), and the split–half reliability coefficients ranged from (0.770 – 0.907). The final form of the instrument showed three major functions.

The Reality of the Medical Waste Management in Dental Clinics Case Study: Dental Clinic in Khan Younis Governorate: واقع إدارة النفايات الطبية في عيادات الأسنان دراسة حالة: عيادة الأسنان في محافظة خانيونس

This study aimed to evaluate the status of medical waste management in dental clinics in Khan Younis governorate (case study) in terms of sorting of hazardous medical waste, collection of waste in sealed bags when filled, transportation through transport trucks for the disposal of medical waste. The researchers used field interview methodology and the direct observation of the clinic and ask a set of questions to the staff in the clinic. The most important findings of the study that there was no proper process of sorting of medical waste where it is random and there was no application of instructions of the laws of the World Health Organization for waste management properly so that it is disposed of by the Ministry of Health in Gaza Governorates incinerators. The study recommended the need for a special system for sorting of hazardous medical waste from non-hazardous medical waste at the source of its production in proper methods and promoting the development of legislation as policies for the management of health waste for health safety and raising awareness among health institutions employees about the concept of medical waste management.
