The experimental data of the elastic scattering angular distribution of 17F+12C at 170 MeV is analyzed by the continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC) method and the optical model (OM). In the CDCC calculation, the unambiguous optical potential of 16O+12C is used as the input to give the coupling potentials. A very refractive feature is found and two evident Airy minima are predicted at large angles. The one-channel calculation is also performed and gives nearly the same result. In the OM calculations, this optical potential of 16O+12C is used again and adjusted to reproduce the angular distribution of 17F+12C. The Airy oscillation appears again in the calculated angular distribution. These results indicate that the elastic scattering of 17F+12C at 170 MeV has the possibility of the nuclear rainbow phenomenon, which is probably due to the contribution from the 16O core.

Using the six-parameter [Formula: see text]-matrix model, we have obtained a simultaneous correct description of the [Formula: see text]Mg elastic and inelastic scattering differential cross-sections over the energy region [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] MeV, where typical nuclear rainbow and prerainbow patterns are observed. The Airy minima of the first-order have been unambiguously identified in the cross-sections for elastic scattering and inelastic scattering to the first 2[Formula: see text] state of [Formula: see text]Mg at [Formula: see text]–145[Formula: see text]MeV. Their angular positions obey an inverse dependence on energy, which is in line with the “rainbow” interpretation of the data. Within this interpretation, the scattering matrix and the deflection function for the system [Formula: see text]Mg at [Formula: see text]–240[Formula: see text]MeV show physically justified smooth variations with the projectile energy.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of [Formula: see text]-particles at 48.1[Formula: see text]MeV and 3He at 60[Formula: see text]MeV on [Formula: see text]O nuclei has been measured with excitation of states at 6.05 (0[Formula: see text])–6.13 (3[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]MeV, 6.92 (2[Formula: see text])–7.12 (1[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]MeV and 8.87 (2[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]MeV. The center-of-mass beam momenta are the same for these two strongly absorbed particles. Analysis of angular distributions was performed in the frameworks of the optical model, the coupled channels method and the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). A good description of experimental data was obtained over the full angular range without taking into account the spin-orbit interaction and the cluster transfer mechanism with real potentials that have volume integrals of about 400[Formula: see text]MeV fm3. Collective and microscopic models were used in the analysis of the inelastic scattering. The values of the octupole deformation lengths were extracted. It is shown that nuclear rainbow effects appear not only in the elastic, but also in the inelastic scattering with excitation of the 3[Formula: see text] state of [Formula: see text]O.
