On completeness and generalized symmetries in quantum field theory

We review a notion of completeness in QFT arising from the analysis of basic properties of the set of operator algebras attached to regions. In words, this completeness asserts that the physical observable algebras produced by local degrees of freedom are the maximal ones compatible with causality. We elaborate on equivalent statements to this completeness principle such as the non-existence of generalized symmetries and the uniqueness of the net of algebras. We clarify that for non-complete theories, the existence of generalized symmetries is unavoidable and further that they always come in dual pairs with precisely the same “size”. Moreover, the dual symmetries are always broken together, be it explicitly or effectively. Finally, we comment on several issues raised in recent literature, such as the relationship between completeness and modular invariance, dense sets of charges, and absence of generalized symmetries in the bulk of holographic theories.

Investigating Translation Technique: A Result of the Students’ Work on Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The modern era, especially in the global pandemic Covid – 19, the need of information, knowledge and entertainment becomes a crucial part since the activities must go online. The government rule stated that the information shall be accessible for anyone, the deaf and hearing impaired, for instance. This descriptive qualitative study aims to investigate the translation technique done by the students in working for subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) in Audiovisual translation class. The finding of 208 data revealed that there are 12 of 18 techniques applied proposed by Molina and Albir. The most dominant technique is literal translation, besides it showed that the students as a subtitlers may apply one or more techniques during doing the subtitling. As a pedagogical implication to this study, the results can be considerations in designing the curriculum for Audio visual translation subject with complete theories and practices, especially in terms of building the emotion and characterization

Modelling and Simulation on Penetration into Stone Concrete

Penetration into stone concrete is an important research area of concrete penetration, and related experiments and simulation tests have been carried out. However, complete theories have not been formed yet. This paper develops a differential facet resistance model for penetration into stone concrete target. Firstly, the plastic damage model is used to analyze the penetration of concrete target, and the reliability of the numerical model is verified by comparing with the classical experimental results. Besides, the numerical model of stone concrete is established based on 3D Voronoi diagram according to the random characteristics of the shape and spatial distribution of stones in concrete. Then, simulation tests are carried out with the validated numerical model, a differential facet resistance model suitable for the penetration of stone concrete target is then proposed referring to the resistance formula of Forrestal and Rosenberg. At last, a method for fast calculation of penetration into stone concrete is introduced.

The anomalous case of axion EFTs and massive chiral gauge fields

We study axion effective field theories (EFTs), with a focus on axion couplings to massive chiral gauge fields. We investigate the EFT interactions that participate in processes with an axion and two gauge bosons, and we show that, when massive chiral gauge fields are present, such interactions do not entirely originate from the usual anomalous EFT terms. We illustrate this both at the EFT level and by matching to UV-complete theories. In order to assess the consistency of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) anomaly matching, it is useful to introduce an auxiliary, non-dynamical gauge field associated to the PQ symmetry. When applied to the case of the Standard Model (SM) electroweak sector, our results imply that anomaly-based sum rules between EFT interactions are violated when chiral matter is integrated out, which constitutes a smoking gun of the latter. As an illustration, we study a UV-complete chiral extension of the SM, containing an axion arising from an extended Higgs sector and heavy fermionic matter that obtains most of its mass by coupling to the Higgs doublets. We assess the viability of such a SM extension through electroweak precision tests, bounds on Higgs rates and direct searches for heavy charged matter. At energies below the mass of the new chiral fermions, the model matches onto an EFT where the electroweak gauge symmetry is non-linearly realised.

Method of the rheostat for studying properties of fragments of theoretical sets

In this article discusses the model-theoretical properties of fragments of theoretical sets and the rheostat method. These two concepts: theoretical set and rheostat are new. The study of this topic in the framework of the study of Jonsson theories, the Jonsson spectrum, classes of existentially closed models of such fragments is a new promising class of problems and their solution is closely related to many problems that once defined the classical problems of model theory. The purpose of this article is to determine the rheostat of the transition from complete theory to Jonsson theory, which will be consistent with the corresponding concepts for any α and any α-Jonsson theory. For this we define a theoretical set. On the basis of research by the author formulated a model-theoretical definition of the concept of a rheostat in the transition from complete theories to ϕ(x)-theoretically convex Jonsson sets. Also was formulated an application of h-syntactic similarity to α-Jonsson theories.

Shotgun Wedding: Fiscal and Monetary Policy

This review describes interactions between monetary and fiscal policies that affect equilibrium price levels and interest rates by critically surveying theories about ( a) optimal anticipated inflation, ( b) optimal unanticipated inflation, and ( c) conditions that secure a nominal anchor in the sense of a unique price level path. We contrast incomplete theories whose inputs are budget-feasible sequences of government-issued bonds and money with complete theories whose inputs are bond/money strategies described as sequences of functions that map time t histories into time t government actions. We cite historical episodes that confirm the theoretical insight that lines of authority between a Treasury and a central bank can be ambiguous, obscure, and fragile.

On the Probabilistic Nature of Observable Phenomena

This paper proposes a Gadenkan experiment named “Observer’s Dilemma”, to investigate the probabilistic nature of observable phenomena. It has been reasoned that probabilistic nature in, otherwise uniquely deterministic phenomena can be introduced due to lack of information of underlying governing laws. Through theoretical consequences of the experiment, concepts of ‘Absolute Complete’ and ‘Observably Complete” theories have been introduced. Furthermore, nature of reality being ‘absolute’ and ‘observable’ have been discussed along with the possibility of multiple realities being true for observer. In addition, certain aspects of quantum mechanics have been interpreted. It has been argued that quantum mechanics is an ‘observably complete’ theory and its nature is to give probabilistic predictions. Lastly, it has been argued that “Everettian - Many world” interpretation of quantum mechanics is very real and true in the framework of ‘observable nature of reality’, for humans.

Future Directions in Human Behavioral Endocrinology

Research within behavioral endocrinology has produced substantial advances over the past few decades. Knowledge of the biological mechanisms involved in human behavior informs evolutionary perspectives on selection pressures in our ancestral past, which encourages the development of more complete theories and more refined research questions. Yet, despite these advances, many unanswered questions remain. This chapter outlines broad suggestions for future hormone research within the topics of development and survival, reproductive behavior, and social and affective behavior. It concludes with several general suggestions for the field, including more research using hormonal assays, longitudinal and experimental designs, exogenous hormone administration, and cross-cultural work. It also suggests that researchers continue to consider the function of other endocrine traits (e.g., carrier proteins) and measure or manipulate hormones in combination with assessing hormone receptor genes. Behavioral endocrinology is a field replete with important future research directions that will contribute important insights into the evolution of our own and other species.
