Three water-soluble quaternized metal-free tetra-(3-pyridyl)bacteriochlorins were synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, MCD, and NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. DFT calculations are indicative of the [Formula: see text]HOMO [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]LUMO relationship, which correlates well with the experimentally observed by MCD spectroscopy for all bacteriochlorins “reversed” sign sequence in the Vis-NIR region. TDDFT calculations also correctly predict large splitting between the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] bands as well as splitting of the Soret band observed experimentally in all bacteriochlorins.

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and TD-DFT calculations are used to analyze the electronic structure and optical properties of low-symmetry acenaphthoporphyrins with AAAB, ABAB and AABB structures. Evidence for dual fluorescence caused by tautomerism has been identified in the emission spectra of the AAAB and ABAB compounds. The sign sequences observed for the Q and B bands in the MCD spectra have been used to validate the results of the TD-DFT calculations. An anomalous +/- sign sequence is observed in the B band region with ascending energy similar to that reported previously for metal tetraphenyltetraacenaphthoporphyrin complexes.

In our original system, we used hidden Markov models (HMMs) to model rough gesture patterns. We later utilized temporal difference (TD) learning to adjust the action model of the tracker for its behavior in the tracking task. We integrated the above two methods into an algorithm by assigning state transition probability in HMMs as a reward in TD learning. Identification of the sign gesture context through wavelet analysis autonomously provides a reward value for optimizing the attentive visual attentive tracker's AVAT's action patterns. A bound of state value functions as a constraint factor for the updating procedure in TD models has been determined to recognize whether predictive models need to be updated according with action models. Experimental results of extracting an operator's hand sign sequence during natural walking demonstrates AVAT development in the perceptual organization framework.

This experiment tested the hypothesis that syntactic constituents in American Sign Language (ASL) serve as perceptual units. We adapted the strategy first employed by Fodor and Bever in 1965 in a study of the psychological reality of linguistic speech segments. Four deaf subjects were shown ASL sign sequences constructed to contain a single constituent break. The dependent measure was the subjective location of a light flash occurring during the sign sequence. The prediction that the flashes would be attracted to the constituent boundary was supported for two of the subjects, while the other two showed random placement of the flash location on either side of the constituent boundary. The two subjects not performing in the predicted direction were more proficient in English (written) than the two giving the effect. It was suggested that this relatively greater proficiency may have interfered in some way with the ASL syntax to produce the results obtained.
