A Co-morbid Condition of Warts and Vitiligo Treated with Individualized Homeopathy: An Evidence-Based Case Report

Background Whilst warts and vitiligo are both common skin diseases, their co-morbidity is rare. Here we present a clinical case of warts with vitiligo to illustrate the utility of individualized homeopathic treatment. Method The homeopathic medicine Sepia officinalis was prescribed, based on individualization. During follow-up, changes were documented by photographs. The non-invasive methods ORIDL (Outcome Related to Impact on Daily Living), VASI (Vitiligo Area and Scoring Index), and VETF (Vitiligo European Task Force) were used to assess treatment progress. Possible causal attribution of outcome with treatment was evaluated using the Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homeopathy (MONARCH). Result There was a marked improvement of vitiligo, along with the disappearance of warts, as evidenced photographically. VASI and VETF scores were significantly reduced. Main complaints, as well as overall well-being, improved on the ORIDL scale (+3). The MONARCH score (+9) suggested that the clinical improvement was attributable to the homeopathic intervention. Conclusion The study suggests a significant role for individualized homeopathic treatment in the co-morbidity of warts and vitiligo.

MODELLING DOMINANT LANGUAGE PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES TO IMMERSE ARABIC LEARNERS

The achievements of language pedagogical models have been studied through the use of input-output models. While teaching and learning programmes are the input, learners’ achievements are the output. However, some specific models have been found to be more effective and evaluated more than others. It is noted that of all the components of language pedagogical models, the specific language learning strategies employed have received less attention. This study evaluates four dominant language pedagogical models namely the Alliance Francaise Model (for French), the Goethe Institut Model (for German), Instituto Cervantes Model (for Spanish), and the model the European-funded Pan-European Task-based Activities in Language Learning (PETALL) project which is co-funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union. Consequently, the strengths identified are reformulated as principles guiding best language pedagogical practices and translated into curriculum conceptual and design framework for a proposed and tentatively tagged, “The Arabic World”. The ultimate purpose wass to replicate some of such successful outcome-based dominant language pedagogical practices in the context of Modern Standard Arabic.

Efficacy and safety of oral simvastatin in the treatment of patients with vitiligo

Vitiligo, an autoimmune disease, is a depigmentation skin disorder characterized by hypopigmentation spots and patches that are difficult to treat. The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical efficacy of simvastatin in the treatment of vitiligo. From December 2016 to October 2019, five vitiligo patients from Peking Union Medical College Hospital were treated with simvastatin and tacrolimus. For simvastatin, the first three patients (patient 1, patient 2, and patient 3) began to take 40 mg/day, and the latter two patients began to take 20 mg/day. From week 5, patients 1 and 2 received 20 mg simvastatin once a day. And the 0.1% tacrolimus ointment was used topically. The response was measured using the Vitiligo European Task Force (VETF) scoring system at baseline and at the fourth and eighth weeks of treatment. The results of the VETF score showed that three of the patients achieved significant clinical efficacy. There was no significant improvement in the other two cases. No serious acute or chronic side effects were observed. In conclusion, our results suggest that conventional oral simvastatin is safe, although it may not be effective in the treatment of vitiligo.

Soluble CD27 and MIF as possible serum biomarkers of vitiligo activity in Egyptian patients in Sharkia Governorate

Contrary to other inflammatory skin disorders like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, vitiligo does not present with distinct inflammatory symptoms that can be easily evaluated by clinical examination. Identification of a putative biomarker to inform early and accurate treatment responses could be of considerable value. This study aims to validate levels of serum soluble CD27 (sCD27) and macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) as biomarkers of vitiligo to improve the quality of disease management. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 32 vitiligo patients, stratified into two subgroups of 22 active and 10 stable vitiligo patients; the stable group containing 1 segmental and 9 non-segmental presentations, and 32 matched healthy individuals as the control group. Of the 32 patients in the study, 21 were female and 11 were male with a median age of 30 years. The measurements of the study parameters of sCD27 and MIF in the serum were carried out through blood sampling and followed up for three months at one-month intervals for stable vitiligo cases. Mean serum levels of sCD27 and MIF were significantly higher in vitiligo patients than in the control group. A positive correlation was observed in active vitiligo cases between both serum MIF and sCD27 levels and the spreading item of Vitiligo European Task Force (VETF) score as an indicator of disease activity. Serum sCD27 and MIF levels in vitiligo patients were observed to be higher than that of controls with greater correlation found for sCD27 with disease activity.
