Phylogeography and Taxonomic Revision of the Pen Shell Atrina pectinata Species Complex in the South China Sea

Phylogeographic studies contribute to addressing questions regarding the geographic patterns and evolutionary scenarios within and among species and also shed light on the taxonomic status of widely distributed species complexes. The pen shell Atrina pectinata species complex is a widely distributed and economically important bivalve in the northwestern Pacific. Previous phylogeographic studies have identified four genetically distinct cryptic species within the A. pectinata species complex along the coast of China, of which three cryptic species were distributed in the South China Sea. However, less attention has been given to their identification and delimitation. Herein, we report the phylogeography and taxonomic revision of the A. pectinata species complex in the South China Sea using DNA sequence data from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA), and nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) gene markers. Using a combination of phylogenetic and DNA-based species delimitation analysis methods, we found strong support for four genetically valid species in the A. pectinata species complex and defined them as A. japonica, A. lischkeana, Atrina sp., and A. pectinata based on our results as well as on previous morphological and genetic studies. A demographic historical analysis showed that all three species in the South China Sea had populations that were relatively stable over time and then subjected to sudden expansion during the late Pleistocene (60,000–90,000 years ago). These results provide new insights into the systematics and evolution of the A. pectinata species complex and have important conservation and management implications.

Amino Acid Profiles and Biopotentiality of Hydrolysates Obtained from Comb Penshell (Atrina pectinata) Viscera Using Subcritical Water Hydrolysis

The recovery of amino acids and other important bioactive compounds from the comb penshell (Atrina pectinata) using subcritical water hydrolysis was performed. A wide range of extraction temperatures from 140 to 290 °C was used to evaluate the release of proteins and amino acids. The amount of crude protein was the highest (36.14 ± 1.39 mg bovine serum albumin/g) at 200 °C, whereas a further increase in temperature showed the degradation of the crude protein content. The highest amount of amino acids (74.80 mg/g) was at 230 °C, indicating that the temperature range of 170–230 °C is suitable for the extraction of protein-rich compounds using subcritical water hydrolysis. Molecular weights of the peptides obtained from comb penshell viscera decreased with the increasing temperature. SDS-PAGE revealed that the molecular weight of peptides present in the hydrolysates above the 200 °C extraction temperature was ≤ 1000 Da. Radical scavenging activities were analyzed to evaluate the antioxidant activities of the hydrolysates. A. pectinata hydrolysates also showed a particularly good antihypertensive activity, proving that this raw material can be an effective source of amino acids and marine bioactive peptides.

Impact of Organic Micropollutants Causing Mass Mortality of the Clams (Mactra aequisulcata) Due to Charactersitic Distribution at Karachi Coast, Pakistan

Mass mortality of bivalve clams along with some other marine fauna was observed during the month of May 2016, mainly consisting of the clams (Mactra aequisulcata) of family Veneridae surfaced over the Clifton coast. The occurrence of mass mortality of the venerid clams Mactra aequisulcata and other marine life has been studied due to the toxicity of chlorinated hydrocarbons (DDTs, HCHs, hexa chloro benzene (HCB), chlordane, dieldrin (4-chlorophenyl), methanol (TCPMOH) and heptachlor epoxide and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Significant compositional characteristics of PCBs and DDTs were found in all dead clams and other fauna including fish (Johnius carutta), crabs (Portunus pelagicus), gastropods (Babylonia spirata), bivalves (Anadara antiquata), (Mactra aequisulcata) and the pen shell (Atrina pectinata) from Karachi coast, Pakistan. Mean concentrations (ranges) of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in crab (Portunus pelagicus) and fish samples were 1.1 (<0.01-1.5), 0.22 (<0.01-1.1) and 0.14 (<0.01-1.3) /µg/g. Those in, bivalves (Anadara antiquata) and pen shell (Atrina pectinata), clams (Mactra aequisulcata) were 0.09 (<0.02-1.2), 0.22 (<0.02-1.3) /µg and 0.13 (<0.01-0.27), respectively. The heptachlor epoxide was found in highest concentration in clam samples (25.00 ± 30.92) µg/g, (wet weight) however, in bivalves, (2.30 µg/g, (wet weight), which were higher than those in other gastropods. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) concentrations were also measured in the same samples of gastropods (Babylonia spirata), fish (Johnius carutta), crab (Portunus pelagicus), clams (Mactra aequisulcata), bivalves (Anadara antiquata) and the pen shell (Atrina pectinata) to determine the possible cause of mass mortality. The DDT to metabolites (DDD & DDE) concentration ratios exceeded upto 1.0 in the sessile fauna that is clams (Mactra aequisulcata) and the pen shell (Atrina pectinata) from Karachi coast. These organisms also exhibited dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) inputs, whereas dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDD) was found to be in degraded component and PCBs were generally in low concentrations. The concentrations of DDTs were higher than the ERL guidelines in the coastal areas of Karachi, suggesting that there is potential of ecological risk present in the prevailing environment.

Parameter that observed in this research was ldl , hdl , cholesterol .This study using methods descriptive against the difference levels of low density lipopprotein ( ldl ) and high-density lipoproteins ( hdl ) and cholesterol in any bivalve hatchets the results of catch fishermen in kenjeran surabaya. Average levels of ldl on pen shells (A. pictinata) In the meat is 30,990 mg/100g, in the muscle is 28,329 mg/100g and in the Digestive organs is 25,225 mg/100g ; The average levels of hdl on pen shells (A. pictinata) in the meat is 96,772 mg/100g, in the muscle is 87,139 mg/100g and in the Digestive organs is 67,516 mg/100g ; average levels of cholesterol on pen shells (A. pictinata) in the meat is 165,609 mg/100g, in the muscle is 147,382 mg/100g and in the Digestive organs is 114,551 mg/100g. Levels of LDL, HDL and cholesterol Lead to results same that is the most number are located on the meat, then muscle and at least there are on an disgestive organ.

KOMPOSISI DAN KELIMPAHAN BIVALVIA DI EKOSISTEM LAMUN PERAIRAN JUANGA KABUPATEN PULAU MOROTAI PROVINSI MALUKU UTARA

Secara ekologi bivalvia berperan dalam menjaga poduktifitas lingkungan. Kurangnya informasi mengenai keberadaan dan komposisi spesies dari Bivalvia tersebut, mendorong untuk dilakukan penelitian ini. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menganalisis komposisi dan kelimpahan spesies Bivalvia di ekosistem Lamun Desa Juanga Kecamatan Morotai Selatan, Kabupaten Pulau Morotai. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan metode kuadrant ukuran 1 x 1 meter untuk Bivalvia Epifauna, dan pipa paralon dengan diameter 10 cm untuk Bivalvia yang terdapat dalam dasar perairan (infauna). Analisis data menggunakan rumus komposisi, dan kelimpahan menggunakan rumus kelimmpahan dengan menggunakan pendekatan Excel. Hasil penelitian didapatkan sebanyak 7 spesies bivalvia yang tersebar di empat stasiun penelitian yaitu Anadara gubernculum, Donax trunculus, Dosinia dilecta, Frogum unedo, Latona cuenata, Atrina pectinata dan Ostrea lurida dengan jumlah total sebanyak 112 individu. Jumlah individu spesies bivalvia berkisar 47- 96 dengan nilai tertinggi pada adalah Anadara gubernculum pada stasiun II (96%), dan terendah di stasiun I (47%). Kesimpulan diperoleh (1) Komposisi spesies Bivalvia memiliki presentasi (absolut) yaitu Anadara gubernculum 0,74 sedangkan untuk spesies lain secara keseluruhan memiliki komposisi kategori (rendah) dengan nilai dibawah 0,23. (2) Kelimpahan individu dan kelimpahan relatif di semua stasiun yang memiliki nilai tertinggi yaitu jenis Anadara gubernculum.
