32 male Ss were either attacked by a peer or treated in a neutral manner. All Ss were then allowed to give electric shocks in varying number and intensity to the peer and also to rate the peer on a number of scales. Both number and intensity of shocks varied as a function of attack, with number showing the greatest degree of variance. Shock number was correlated with expressed anger only among control Ss. Neither shock measure correlated with anger in the attack Ss. Verbal ratings of hostility correlated highly with anger in attacked Ss. The results were discussed in terms of general methodology in the study of aggression.
