Respect is one of the central concepts in contemporary moral thought. It plays a prominent role in everyday, pre-philosophical moral thinking, as well as in recent moral theory and applied ethics. Yet basic questions about the concept and role of respect have received less attention than might be expected. This volume takes up some of these basic questions. The book is not meant to be a comprehensive handbook that covers all aspects of the topic of respect, nor is the focus of the book mainly historical. Rather, the aim is to give leading experts in the field a chance to present their latest ideas and point the research on respect in new directions. Following an introductory historical essay, Part I addresses questions of what respect is, its nature and basis. Part II examines questions in moral theory, for example what exactly ought to be respected, what role respect plays in morality, and which different types of respect are appropriate and morally significant. Part III deals with the practical application of requirements of respect. The essays in this volume will be of interest both to scholars and students working on issues of respect and to anyone interested in this central moral notion.

The article examines the expediency of introducing spiritual and moral and ethical values as an object of protection by the National Security Service of Ukraine in accordance with the draft Law on Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On the Security Service of Ukraine" to improve organizational and legal principles. activities of the Security Service of Ukraine. It is established that as an object of national security, public morality can be interpreted in a narrow and broad sense. In a broad sense, such an object of public morality can be interpreted as a system of state values, such as sovereignty, language, territorial integrity, health, honour, dignity, inviolability of the person and so on. In the narrow sense, the object of social morality is the spiritual state of each individual, because a person according to the Basic Law of Ukraine is the highest value. It is clear that public morality cannot be "programmed" even by interpreting the practice of past world experience, and thus moral values are more appropriate to lay in the legal field to be protected. In our opinion, public morality as an object of protection by the security service of Ukraine should include in its structure values and ideas related to the life of society, as well as requirements and practices corresponding to these values. The current legislation of Ukraine, which is designed to protect human rights and freedoms, unfortunately, does not contain an interpretation of the concept of "morality" and "public morality". Even though everyone can understand good and evil, useful and harmful, he is also subject to his own ideas of good and bad. Under the law, a basic amount of responsibilities is created, the standard of moral behaviour necessary for the proper functioning of society. Thus, although the law cannot express the will of everyone and cannot correspond to the moral idea of justice of everyone, it is in democratic, legal states that the law creates a personal space of man, in which he harmoniously coexists with his own considerations of morality. Morality as a specific object of the national security service of Ukraine should form a kind of code of appropriate and positive for society, regulate behaviour, have a special spiritual dimension and perform in society several socially significant functions that will promote harmonization of person and society. Although the law cannot express the will of everyone and cannot correspond to the moral notion of justice of everyone, it is in democratic, legal states that the law creates a person's personal space in which he harmoniously coexists with his own considerations of morality. Morality as a specific object of the national security service of Ukraine should form a kind of code of appropriate and positive for society, regulate behaviour, have a special spiritual dimension and perform in society a number of socially significant functions that will promote harmonization of person and society. Public political debate about migration has become increasingly important and increasingly heated; substantive engagement with the morality of migration, however, is more uncommon. This book defends a moderate account of the right to exclude, on which the state may exclude some unwanted would-be migrants—but on which there are significant constraints on how and when that right can be exercised. The book grounds this in a particular vision of how exclusion might be justified, on which states are possessed of a presumptive right to avoid unwanted forms of political relationship. This account of the right to exclude is then applied in more specific questions of justice in migration, such as the permissibility of travel bans and carrier sanctions. The book also offers a particular vision about how to go beyond questions of right and liberal justice, toward a declaration of the sort of community we wish to be. The book identifies the moral notion of mercy as a central one for the moral analysis of migration; we ought to show mercy and justice in the construction of migration policy, and each of these moral norms has a role to play in public discourse.

This chapter examines what John Locke means by consciousness in relation to his account of personal identity. It begins with the statement that the only things of which one can be Conscious are: [M] human material body, [I] immaterial soul (if any), and [A] one's actions and experiences (including one's thoughts in the narrower cognitive sense). In other words, these, presumably, are what wholly constitute one as a person, in Locke's view, at any given time: [P] = [M] ± [I] + [A]. If the notion of a person were a wholly or merely moral notion, one would expect the being or extent of oneself as person to be identical to the being or extent of one's field of responsibility. In fact, the notion of oneself as person also includes one's substantial makeup, material and/or immaterial. The chapter also considers the link between memory and consciousness.

With a focus on the role of integrity in relation to business ethics versus economic strategy, this chapter contains following sections: 1) the concept of organizational integrity as a moral notion as it is described in the work of Lynn-Sharp Paine on organizational integrity, 2) the concept of integrity as an economic notion as it is described in the recent work of Michael Jensen—this section discusses recent efforts in the business economics literature to consider integrity as an important notion of strategy—, 3) Paine contra Jensen: a virtue or a workability concept of integrity—here, the authors discuss the basic dilemmas and problems of integrating integrity, economic performance, and strategy in the perspective of the two theories about integrity of Paine and Jensen.

The article revisits Inferno 26-27 from the perspective of the medieval pastoral debate on peccata linguae and focuses on the controversial phrase consiglio frodolente (Inf. 27.116). I begin my analysis by examining the notion of pravum consilium ‘evil counsel’ in two tracts on verbal sins: William Peraldus’ “De peccato linguae” (c. 1236) and Domenico Cavalca’s Il Pungilingua (1330-1342). In the second part of my essay, I analyze the figure of Ulysses in relationship to that of Guido da Montefeltro and argue that consiglio frodolente is not a misnomer for the sin of bolgia eight, as some commentators have contended. In the above-mentioned ethical tracts, the most salient feature of pravum consilium is its connection with fraud. In coining the phrase consiglio frodolente, Dante highlights this connection and renders this verbal sin perfectly consonant with the system of Malebolge. Cantos 26 and 27 of the Inferno mark a significant stage in the history of pravum consilium as a moral notion that situates itself at the intersection of speech, ethics, and politics.
