Microencapsulation of a Pseudomonas Strain (VUPF506) in Alginate–Whey Protein–Carbon Nanotubes and Next-Generation Sequencing Identification of This Strain

Alginate is a common agent used for microencapsulation; however, the formed capsule is easily damaged. Therefore, alginate requires blending with other biopolymers to reduce capsule vulnerability. Whey protein is one polymer that can be incorporated with alginate to improve microcapsule structure. In this study, three different encapsulation methods (extrusion, emulsification, and spray drying) were tested for their ability to stabilize microencapsulated Pseudomonas strain VUPF506. Extrusion and emulsification methods enhanced encapsulation efficiency by up to 80% and gave the best release patterns over two months. A greenhouse experiment using potato plants treated with alginate–whey protein microcapsules showed a decrease in Rhizoctonia disease intensity of up to 70%. This is because whey protein is rich in amino acids and can serve as a resistance induction agent for the plant. In this study, the use of CNT in the ALG–WP system increased the rooting and proliferation and reduced physiological complication. The results of this study showed that the technique used in encapsulation could have a significant effect on the efficiency and persistence of probiotic bacteria. Whole genome sequence analysis of strain VUPF506 identified it as Pseudomonas chlororaphis and revealed some genes that control pathogens.

Tissue Regeneration with Hydrogel Encapsulation: A Review of Developments in Plants and Animals

Hydrogel encapsulation has been widely utilized in the study of fundamental cellular mechanisms and has been shown to provide a better representation of the complex in vivo microenvironment in natural biological conditions of mammalian cells. In this review, we provide a background into the adoption of hydrogel encapsulation methods in the study of mammalian cells, highlight some key findings that may aid with the adoption of similar methods for the study of plant cells, including the potential challenges and considerations, and discuss key findings of studies that have utilized these methods in plant sciences.

Trans-ε-Viniferin Encapsulation in Multi-Lamellar Liposomes: Consequences on Pharmacological Parameters, Biodistribution and Glucuronide Formation in Rats

Trans-ε-viniferin (εVin) is a resveratrol dimer exhibiting promising biological activities for human health. Its bioavailability being low, the development of encapsulation methods would be used to overcome this issue. The aim of this study was to measure the consequences of the encapsulation of εVin in multilamellar liposomes on its pharmacokinetic parameters, metabolism and tissue distribution in rats. After oral administration of εVin (20 mg/kg body weight), either as free or encapsulated forms, plasmas were sequentially collected (from 0 to 4 h) as well as liver, kidneys and adipose tissues (4 h after administration) and analyzed by LC-HRMS. The glucuronide metabolites (εVG) were also produced by hemisynthesis for their quantification in plasma and tissues. The encapsulation process did not significantly modify the pharmacokinetic parameters of εVin itself. However, a significant increase of the T1/2 was noticed for εVG after administration of the encapsulated form as compared to the free form. An accumulation of εVin and εVG in adipose tissues was noticed, and interestingly a significant increase of the latter in the mesenteric one after administration of the encapsulated form was highlighted. Since adipose tissues could represent storage depots, and encapsulation allows for prolonging the exposure time of glucuronide metabolites in the organism, this could be of interest to promote their potential biological activities.

Advances in the Application of Nanomaterials as Treatments for Bacterial Infectious Diseases

Bacteria-targeting nanomaterials have been widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. These nanomaterials show great potential as antimicrobial agents due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial capacity and relatively low toxicity. Recently, nanomaterials have improved the accurate detection of pathogens, provided therapeutic strategies against nosocomial infections and facilitated the delivery of antigenic protein vaccines that induce humoral and cellular immunity. Biomaterial implants, which have traditionally been hindered by bacterial colonization, benefit from their ability to prevent bacteria from forming biofilms and spreading into adjacent tissues. Wound repair is improving in terms of both the function and prevention of bacterial infection, as we tailor nanomaterials to their needs, select encapsulation methods and materials, incorporate activation systems and add immune-activating adjuvants. Recent years have produced numerous advances in their antibacterial applications, but even further expansion in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases is expected in the future.

The Development of Graphene/Silica Hybrid Composites: A Review for Their Applications and Challenges

Graphene and silica are two materials that have wide uses and applications because of their unique properties. Graphene/silica hybrid composite, which is a combination of the two, has the good properties of a combination of graphene and silica while reducing the detrimental properties of both, so that it has promising future prospects in various fields. It is very important to design a synthesis method for graphene/silica composite hybrid materials to adapt to its practical application. In this review, the synthesis strategies of graphene, silica, and hybrid graphene/silica composites such as hydrothermal, sol-gel, hydrolysis, and encapsulation methods along with their results are studied. The application of this composite is also discussed, which includes applications such as adsorbents, energy storage, biomedical fields, and catalysts. Furthermore, future research challenges and futures need to be developed so that hybrid graphene/silica composites can be obtained with promising new application prospects.

Comparative Efficiency of Physical and Physicochemical Microencapsulation of some Medicinal Substances

Microencapsulation of drugs is used for a long time to improve their properties. It was carried out a comparative assessment of the physical and physicochemical methods of microencapsulation on the example of some drugs. The spray drying method was selected from the physical methods. Physicochemical method based on simple coacervation was implemented by changing the solvent. A study and comparison of the properties of the products were obtained by UV and IR spectroscopy, liquid chromatography, electron microscopy. It was carried out a comparative assessment of the release profile of the active substance from microcapsules obtained by various methods. Using the example of furacilin microcapsules has been shown an increase in the biological activity of substances encapsulated in water-soluble polymers. The particle size distribution was determined by analyzing their trajectories. The main advantages and disadvantages of the two investigated encapsulation methods are outlined.

Microencapsulation of Bioactive Ingredients for Their Delivery into Fermented Milk Products: A Review

The popularity and consumption of fermented milk products are growing. On the other hand, consumers are interested in health-promoting and functional foods. Fermented milk products are an excellent matrix for the incorporation of bioactive ingredients, making them functional foods. To overcome the instability or low solubility of many bioactive ingredients under various environmental conditions, the encapsulation approach was developed. This review analyzes the fortification of three fermented milk products, i.e., yogurt, cheese, and kefir with bioactive ingredients. The encapsulation methods and techniques alongside the encapsulant materials for carotenoids, phenolic compounds, omega-3, probiotics, and other micronutrients are discussed. The effect of encapsulation on the properties of bioactive ingredients themselves and on textural and sensory properties of fermented milk products is also presented.

Polymeric Carriers Designed for Encapsulation of Essential Oils with Biological Activity

The article reviews the possibilities of encapsulating essential oils EOs, due to their multiple benefits, controlled release, and in order to protect them from environmental conditions. Thus, we present the natural polymers and the synthetic macromolecular chains that are commonly used as networks for embedding EOs, owing to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, interdependent encapsulation methods, and potential applicability of bioactive blend structures. The possibilities of using artificial intelligence to evaluate the bioactivity of EOs—in direct correlation with their chemical constitutions and structures, in order to avoid complex laboratory analyses, to save money and time, and to enhance the final consistency of the products—are also presented.
