It is shown that the quartic Fermat equation x4 + y4 = 1 has nontrivial integral solutions in the Hilbert class field Σ of any quadratic field [Formula: see text] whose discriminant satisfies -d ≡ 1 (mod 8). A corollary is that the quartic Fermat equation has no nontrivial solution in [Formula: see text], for p (> 7) a prime congruent to 7 (mod 8), but does have a nontrivial solution in the odd degree extension Σ of K. These solutions arise from explicit formulas for the points of order 4 on elliptic curves in Tate normal form. The solutions are studied in detail and the results are applied to prove several properties of the Weber singular moduli introduced by Yui and Zagier.

AbstractUntil recently, the ‘plus part’ of the class numbers of cyclotomic fields had only been determined for fields of root discriminant small enough to be treated by Odlyzko’s discriminant bounds. However, by finding lower bounds for sums over prime ideals of the Hilbert class field, we can now establish upper bounds for class numbers of fields of larger discriminant. This new analytic upper bound, together with algebraic arguments concerning the divisibility properties of class numbers, allows us to unconditionally determine the class numbers of many cyclotomic fields that had previously been untreatable by any known method. In this paper, we study in particular the cyclotomic fields of composite conductor.

We give a construction of genus fields for Kummer cyclic l-extensions of rational congruence function fields, l a prime number. First we find this genus field for a field contained in a cyclotomic function field using Leopoldt's construction by means of Dirichlet characters and the Hilbert class field defined by Rosen. The general case follows from this. This generalizes the result obtained by Peng for a cyclic extension of degree l.

We investigate class field towers of number fields obtained as fixed fields of modular representations of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers. First, for each k ∈ {12, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26}, we give explicit rational primes ℓ such that the fixed field of the mod-ℓ representation attached to the unique normalized cusp eigenform of weight k on SL2(ℤ) has an infinite class field tower. Further, under a conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood, we prove the existence of infinitely many cyclotomic fields of prime conductor, providing infinitely many such primes ℓ for each k in the list. Finally, given a non-CM curve E/ℚ, we show that there exists an integer ME such that the fixed field of the representation attached to the n-division points of E has an infinite class field tower for a set of integers n of density one among integers coprime to ME.

AbstractWe compute the minimal polynomials of the Ramanujan values tn, where n ≡ 11 mod 24, using the Shimura reciprocity law. These polynomials can be used for defining the Hilbert class field of the imaginary quadratic field and have much smaller coefficients than the Hilbert polynomials.
