<p>Hughes et al. (1977) hypothesized of a pan-Arctic Ice Sheet that behaved as a single dynamic system during the Last Glacial Maximum. Moreover, the authors suggested a nearly grounded ice shelf in Davis Strait implying that little or no exchange between Baffin Island and the Labrador Sea. Here we present data at 1-cm (<100 years) resolution between ~12 ka and 45 ka that shed light on the discharge from Hudson Strait and Lancaster Sound ice streams of the Late Pleistocene Laurentide Ice Sheet. A reference sediment core at 938 m water depth on the SE Baffin Slope was investigated with new oxygen isotope stratigraphy, X-ray fluorescence geochemistry, and 18 14C-AMS dates and correlated to 14 regional deep-water cores. Detrital carbonate-rich sediment layers H0-H4 were derived principally from Hudson Strait. Shortly after H2 and H3, the shelf-crossing Cumberland Sound ice stream supplied dark brown ice-proximal stratified sediments but no glacigenic debris-flow deposits. The counterparts of H3, H4, and (?)H5 events in the deep Labrador basin are 4–10 m thick units of thin-bedded carbonate-rich mud turbidites from glacigenic debris flows on the Hudson Strait slope. The behavior of the Hudson Strait ice stream changed through the last glacial cycle. The Hudson Strait ice stream remained at the shelf break in H3-H5 but retreated rapidly across the shelf in H0-H2 and did not deglaciate Hudson Bay. During this time, Cumberland Sound ice twice reached the shelf edge. In H3–H5, it remained at the shelf break long enough to supply thick turbidites. Minor supply of carbonate-rich sediment from Baffin Bay allows chronologic integration of the Baffin Bay and Labrador Sea detrital carbonate records, which is diachronous with respect to Heinrich events. The asynchrony of the carbonate events implies an open seaway through Davis Strait. Our data suggest that the maximum extent of ice streams in Hudson Strait, Cumberland Sound, and Lancaster Sound was neither synchronous.</p>

ABSTRACT Dolomite is a common and volumetrically important mineral in many siliciclastic sandstones, including Permian Rotliegend sandstones (the Slochteren Formation). These sandstones form extensive gas reservoirs in the Southern Permian Basin in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and the UK. The reservoir quality of these sandstones is negatively influenced by the content and distribution of dolomite. The origin and the stratigraphic distribution of the dolomite is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study is to identify the origin of carbonate. The main methods used to achieve those aims are a combination of thin-section petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM and EDX), and XRD analyses. The present study shows that the typical dispersed occurrence of the dolomite is a consequence of dispersed detrital carbonate grains that served both as nuclei and source for authigenic dolomite cement. The dolomite cement formed syntaxial outgrowths and overgrowths around detrital carbonate grains. The study also shows that dolomite cement, often in combination with ankerite and siderite, precipitated during burial after mechanical compaction. Most of the carbonate grains consisted of dolomite before deposition. The carbonate grains were affected by compaction and pressure dissolution, and commonly have no well-defined outlines anymore. The distribution of dolomite cement in the Rotliegend sandstones was controlled by the presence of stable carbonate grains. Due to the restricted and variable content of carbonate grains and their dispersed occurrence, the cement is also dispersed and the degree of cementation heterogeneous. Our findings have important implications on diagenesis modeling. The presence of detrital carbonate excludes the need for external supply by any large-scale advective flow of diagenetic fluids. By knowing that the carbonate source is local and related to detrital grains instead of being externally derived from an unknown source, the presence of carbonate cement can be linked to a paleogeographic and sedimentological model.

Few records in the alpine landscape of western North America document the geomorphic and glaciologic response to climate change during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. While moraines can provide snapshots of glacier extent, high-resolution records of environmental response to the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, Younger Dryas cooling, and subsequent warming into the stable Holocene are rare. We describe the transition from the late Pleistocene to the Holocene using a ~ 17,000-yr sediment record from Swiftcurrent Lake in eastern Glacier National Park, MT, with a focus on the period from ~ 17 to 11 ka. Total organic and inorganic carbon, grain size, and carbon/nitrogen data provide evidence for glacial retreat from the late Pleistocene into the Holocene, with the exception of a well-constrained advance during the Younger Dryas from 12.75 to 11.5 ka. Increased detrital carbonate concentration in Swiftcurrent Lake sediment reflects enhanced glacial erosion and sediment transport, likely a result of a more proximal ice terminus position and a reduction in the number of alpine lakes acting as sediment sinks in the valley.

This paper describes a method for effective separation of the pure binder fraction of lime mortars for reliable radiocarbon dating. The methodology allows removal of the detrital carbonate fraction and the unburnt limestone particles, obtaining particles of under 1 μm. The extracted fraction ensured that all carbonate has been generated by slaked lime carbonation. Consequently, the measured carbon corresponds to atmospheric carbon. The proposed method allows to obtain pure datable binder, simplifying considerably the performance of radiometric measurements because dating other grain-size fraction is unnecessary. In order to prove the effectiveness of binder refining, the extraction method has been applied to 5 lime mortars of different archaeological periods from the perimeter walls of Santa María la Real parish church (Zarautz, northern Spain).
