Effects of Salt on Root Aeration, Nitrification, and Nitrogen Uptake in Mangroves

The potential effects of salt on the growth, root anatomy, radial oxygen loss (ROL), and nitrogen (N) dynamics in mangroves were investigated using the seedlings of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. The results showed that a moderate salinity (200 mM NaCl) appeared to have little negative effect on the growth of A. marina. However, higher salt stresses (400 and 600 mM NaCl) significantly inhibited the biomass yield. Concentrations of N in the roots and leaves decreased sharply with increasing salinity. Nevertheless, the presence of salt directly altered root anatomy (e.g., reduced root porosity and promoted suberization within the exodermis and endodermis), leading to a significant reduction in ROL. The results further showed that reduced ROL induced by salt could restrain soil nitrification, resulting in less ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria (AOA and AOB) gene copies and lower concentrations of NO3− in the soils. While increased root suberization induced by salt inhibited NH4+ and NO3− uptake and influx into the roots. In summary, this study indicated that inhibited root aeration may be a defense response to salt, however these root symptoms were not advantageous for rhizosphere nitrification and N uptake by A. marina.

Evaluation of root porosity and radial oxygen loss of disomic addition lines of Hordeum marinum in wheat

Hordeum marinum Huds. is a waterlogging-tolerant wild relative of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Greater root porosity (gas volume per root volume) and formation of a barrier to reduce root radial O2 loss (ROL) contribute to the waterlogging tolerance of H. marinum and these traits are evident in some H. marinum–wheat amphiploids. We evaluated root porosity, ROL patterns and tolerance to hypoxic stagnant conditions for 10 various H. marinum (two accessions) disomic chromosome addition (DA) lines in wheat (two varieties), produced from two H. marinum–wheat amphiploids and their recurrent wheat parents. None of the DA lines had a barrier to ROL or higher root porosity than the wheat parents. Lack of a root ROL barrier in the six DA lines for H. marinum accession H21 in Chinese Spring (CS) wheat indicates that the gene(s) for this trait do not reside on one of these six chromosomes; unfortunately, chromosome 3 of H. marinum has not been isolated in CS. Unlike the H21–CS amphiploid, which formed a partial ROL barrier in roots, the H90–Westonia amphiploid and the four derived DA lines available did not. The unaltered root aeration traits in the available DA lines challenge the strategy of using H. marinum as a donor of these traits to wheat.

Effect of root aeration and form of nitrogen on photosynthetic productivity of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.)

The response of 1-year old pine seedlings, grown in sand and water culture, to nutrition with nitrate or ammonium form of nitrogen, as well as to various aeration of the cultures was studied. Measurements of photosynthesis and respiration were carried out. Production of organic matter and its distribution to particular organs were determined. Seedlings supplied with NH₄Cl were characterized by smaller contribution of root dry weight to the total weight of the plant. Poor aeration (heavy watering) of seedlings supplied with ammonium chloride caused a decrease in the rate of photosynthesis. Plants supplied with NH₄C1 did not show the typical decrease of photosynthetic rate at the end of the growing season.
