Age and growth are key elements on the fish population dynamics, allowing the age structure identification, age of first maturity, mortality rates and longevity calculations, among others. There are also age-based fisheries and ecological models that depends on these studies. It is a challenger field due to the intrinsic variability of growth process at individual and population levels, influenced by endogen and exogen factors. For freshwater fishes, the modal progression analysis, and the analysis of growth rings on scales are widespread applied for age and growth. Like all methods, premises and limitations exist and they must be observed. Otolith analysis is more accurate, unless difficult to stream fishes due to sample size requirements, small otolith size and rings record, specially at the Neotropical region. In this study, sample techniques, material and data acquirement and analyses are presented, focusing stream fishes. Limitations were identified in the results available in the scientific literature due to no consideration of methods premises allied to the mechanic use of software and manuals. For further studies, length frequency analysis, otolith daily rings and experiments are recommended to estimate age and growth of fishes from brooks and streams.

Biological reference points (BRPs) derived from per-recruit analyses are commonly used in inferring stock status and serve as the target or threshold in fisheries management. However, the estimation of BRPs may be impacted by the variability in life history processes, and particularly, individual growth rates often display substantial seasonal oscillations but are seldomly considered in per-recruit analyses. Using four commercial fish species Lophius litulon, Saurida elongata, Hexagrammos otakii, and Larimichthys polyactis in coastal China Seas as examples, this study examined the effects of seasonal growth variability on per-recruit analyses and on the estimation of BRPs. We developed an individual-based modeling framework to simulate growth patterns with and without variations at the seasonal and the individual levels and adopted two common assessment methods, age-based analysis and length-frequency analysis, to estimate growth parameters regarding data availability in data-rich or data-poor fisheries, respectively. We found that ignoring seasonality could lead to substantial errors in the estimation of BRPs for the small-size species H. otakii and L. polyactis in our evaluation; when seasonal growth was considered, the estimation could be largely improved. Length-frequency analysis might yield considerably less reliable estimations than age-based method. The time of year when fast growth occurs determines positive or negative bias in estimation, and the amplitude of seasonal growth determines the degree of biases. In general, ignoring the seasonality of growth when there is can lead to underestimated growth parameter K and trigger biases that propagate in stock assessment and management, whereas incorporating seasonality falsely in assessment when there is no seasonal variation will have little influences on the estimation of BRPs. This study contributes to demonstrate the risk of ignoring seasonality in stock assessment and the approaches accounting for seasonal variability in fishery management.

Abstract Counting bands via the gastric mill is a potential direct approach for ageing crayfish; however, the validity of ageing crustaceans using the gastric mill is unknown. Our study objectives were to 1) compare gastric mill age estimates to a traditional aging technique, 2) compare ageing precision among the ossicles, and 3) examine the effects of temperature on gastric mill band formation. From 2017–2018, we collected 681 ringed crayfish Faxonius neglectus neglectus (Faxon) from ten Ozark Highland streams. Our length-frequency analysis reflected seven age classes, whereas gastric mill age estimates indicated individuals were up to 10 yr of age. The length-frequency analysis age estimates showed good congruence (± 1 yr) with age estimates from the gastric mill 78% of the time. The coefficient of variation (CV) of age estimates from gastric mill bands between our readers was 29.7%. Ageing precision was highest when using the zygocardiac ossicles (CV = 12.4%). Gastric mill age estimates for known age-1 crayfish from a thermally stable laboratory were not significantly different from one, whereas age estimates from a thermally varying laboratory were greater than one. Our results indicate molting frequency does not control gastric mill band formation, and temperature plays a role in band formation.

Tiger shark is one of the important catch for small scale fisheries in West Nusa Tenggara. It is considered nearly threatened according the IUCN, thus information regarding to its estimated population is needed for conservative efforts. This study aimed to estimate the biological and population parameters of the tiger shark in Indonesia. Length data were collected from March to December 2018 in Tanjung Luar Port, West Nusa Tenggara. The length-weight relationship was calculated using equation W=aLb. Electronic length-frequency analysis (ELEFAN) in R Statistics with package “TropFishR” was used to estimate the population parameter. Length converted catch curve (LCCC) analysis was used to estimate the total mortality of the species. The results showed the length-weight relationship for combined sex, male and female was similar to the equation W=0.000001L3.15. The growth pattern for this species was positive allometric which means that the growth of weight is faster than its length. Total mortality was estimated at 0.33/yr, with natural and fishing mortality of 0.16/yr and 0.17/yr, respectively. The results from this study should be able to provide the basic information to support fisheries management of tiger sharks in Indonesia.

Dinamika populasi merupakan aspek penting sebagai dasar pengelolaan perikanan dan informasi tentang aspek tersebut pada lobster pasir masih minim di perairan Palabuhanratu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengkaji aspek pertumbuhan, pola rekrutmen, mortalitas dan laju eksploitasi lobster pasir (Panulirus homarus) di perairan Palabuhanratu. Penelitian ini dilakukan periode Juni 2015-Mei 2016 dengan metode sensus. Lobster pasir hasil tangkapan jaring insang dasar dengan jumlah total sampel 483 ekor mempunyai panjang karapas antara 28-100 mm. Pola pertumbuhan berdasarkan hasil regresi linear memperlihatkan allometrik negatif. Hasil analisis menggunakan metode ELEFAN I (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) menunjukan koefisien pertumbuhan lobster pasir jantan (K = 0,29 per tahun), lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan betina (K = 0,40 per tahun). Rekrutmen terindikasi dua puncak dalam setahun: yaitu pada Februari-Mei dan September-Oktober). Laju mortalitaskarena penangkapan (F) mencapai 1,9-2,2 kali laju mortalitas alami (M). Nilai Lc<Lrmemperlihatkan lobster pasir sudah tertangkap sebelum mencapaiukuran rata-rata mengerami telur atau ukuran kematangan reproduktif. Laju eksploitasi lobster pasir mencapai 32-38% di atas laju eksploitasi optimum, sehingga lobster pasir sudah mengalamieksploitasi yang berlebih.Population dynamics is an important aspect as basic of fisheries management and little information of this aspect for spiny lobster fishery in Pelabuhanratu waters. This research aims to evaluate of growth aspects, recruitment pattern, mortality, and exploitation rate of scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) in Palabuhanratu waters. This research was conducted in June 2015 until May 2016 using census method. The size of P. homarus captured using bottom gill-net with total sample 483 specimen was between 28-100 mm carapace lengths (CL). Linear regression showed that growth pattern was negative allometric. The growth coefficient of male (K = 0.29 per year) was found smaller than female (K = 0.40 per year) based on ELEFAN I (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) method. Recruitment seems to be accrued twice peaks a year (February to May and September to October) and the highest was at February to May. Fishing mortality (F) reached 1.9 to 2.2 times of natural mortality (M). The LcÂLr value showed that female has been caught before reached the average size of bearing eggs or reproductive maturity size. The exploitation rate of spiny lobsters reaches 32-38% above optimum level. This study suggests that the spiny lobster fishery in Palabuhanratu in the state of overexploitation.

Perikanan neritik tuna di perairan Barat Sumatera berkembang pesat beberapa dekade terakhir ini. Sementara belum banyak diperoleh hasil penelitian tentang populasi ikan tongkol lisong (Auxis rochei). Penelitian tentang parameter populasi dan pola rekruitmen ikan tongkol lisong dilakukan pada bulan Februari-Desember 2013 di beberapa lokasi pendaratan ikan di Barat Sumatera. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh laju pertumbuhan, panjang asimptotik, laju kematian, laju eksploitasi, dan pola rekruitmen ikan tongkol lisong (Auxis rochei). Estimasi parameter populasi menggunakan model analitik berdasarkan program “Electronic Length Frequency Analysis (ELEFAN 1)”. Data frekuensi panjang dikumpulkan berkesinambungan di beberapa tempat pendaratan utama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan panjang cagak ikan tongkol lisong yang tertangkap berada pada kisaran 11-42 cmFL. Parameter pertumbuhan Von Bertalanffy diperoleh nilai laju pertumbuhan (K) sebesar 0,54/tahun, panjang asimptotik (L ) sebesar 43,5 cm FL, dan umur ikan pada saat panjang ke-0 (-t0) sebesar -0,076/tahun. Laju mortalitas total (Z) sebesar 1,96/tahun. Laju kematian karena penangkapan (F) sebesar ,07/tahun, dan laju kematian alami (M) 0,89/tahun. Laju eksploitasi (E) tongkol lisong di Barat Sumatera adalah 0,49/tahun atau berada pada tingkat eksploitasi moderat. Estimation of population parameters using an analytical model based on the program “Electronic Length Frequency Analysis (ELEFAN 1)”. Length frequency data collected continuously in themain landing places The results showed the fork length of bullet tuna was caught in the range 11-42 cm FL. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters obtained the growth rate value (K) of 0,54/year, asymptotic length (L ) of 43,5 cm FL, and fish age when the length to the-0 (-t0) of -0,076/year. Total mortality was 1,96/year. Fishing mortality rate (F) was 1,07/year and natural mortality rate (M) 0,89/year. The exploitation rate (E) of bullet tiuna in West Sumatra was 0,49 / year or are at a moderate level of exploitation. Recruitment patterns of bullet tuna happen twice in a year, which reached a peak in March and June.
