El Niño as a predictor of round sardinella distribution along the northwest African coast

<p>The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) produces global marine environment conditions that can cause changes in abundance and distribution of distant fish populations worldwide. Understanding mechanisms acting locally on fish population dynamics is crucial to develop forecast skill useful for fisheries management. The present work addresses the role played by ENSO on the round sardinella population biomass and distribution in the central-southern portion of the Canary Current Upwelling System (CCUS). A combined physical-biogeochemical framework is used to understand the climate influence on the hydrodynamical conditions in the study area. Then, an evolutionary individual-based model is used to simulate the round sardinella spatio-temporal biomass variability. According to model experiments, anomalous oceanographic conditions forced by El Niño along the African coast cause anomalies in the latitudinal migration pattern of the species. A robust anomalous increase and decrease of the simulated round sardinella biomass is identified in winter off the Cape Blanc and the Saharan coast region, respectively, in response to El Niño variations. The resultant anomalous pattern is an alteration of the normal migration between the Saharan and the Mauritanian waters. It is primarily explained by the mod- ulating role that El Niño exerts on the currents off Cape Blanc, modifying therefore the normal migration of round sardinella in the search of acceptable temperature conditions. This climate signature can be potentially predicted up to six months in advance based on El Niño conditions in the Pacific.</p>

Detecting Pattern Anomalies in Hydrological Time Series with Weighted Probabilistic Suffix Trees

Anomalous patterns are common phenomena in time series datasets. The presence of anomalous patterns in hydrological data may represent some anomalous hydrometeorological events that are significantly different from others and induce a bias in the decision-making process related to design, operation and management of water resources. Hence, it is necessary to extract those “anomalous” knowledge that can provide valuable and useful information for future hydrological analysis and forecasting from hydrological data. This paper focuses on the problem of detecting anomalous patterns from hydrological time series data, and proposes an effective and accurate anomalous pattern detection approach, TFSAX_wPST, which combines the advantages of the Trend Feature Symbolic Aggregate approximation (TFSAX) and weighted Probabilistic Suffix Tree (wPST). Experiments with different hydrological real-world time series are reported, and the results indicate that the proposed methods are fast and can correctly detect anomalous patterns for hydrological time series analysis, and thus promote the deep analysis and continuous utilization of hydrological time series data.

Modeling the climatic implications and indicative senses of the Guliya δ¹⁸O-temperature proxy record to the ocean–atmosphere system during the past 130 ka

Using an intermediate-complexity UVic Earth System Climate Model (UVic Model), the geographical and seasonal implications and indicative senses of the Guliya temperature proxy found in the Guliya δ18O ice core record (hereinafter, the Guliya δ18O-temperature proxy record) are investigated under time-dependent orbital and CO2 forcings with an acceleration factor of 50 over the past 130 ka. The results reveal that the simulated August–September Guliya surface air temperature (SAT) reproduces the 21-ka precession and 43-ka obliquity cycles of the Guliya δ18O-temperature proxy record, showing an in-phase variation with the latter. Moreover, the Guliya δ18O-temperature proxy record may be also an indicator of the August–September Northern Hemispheric (NH) SAT. Corresponding to the difference between the extreme warm and cold phases of the precession cycle in the Guliya August–September SAT, there are two anomalous patterns in SAT and sea surface temperature (SST). The first anomalous pattern shows increases of SAT and SST toward the Arctic, which is possibly associated with an increase of the NH incoming solar radiation that is caused by the in-phase superposition between the precession and obliquity cycles. The second anomalous pattern shows increases of SAT and SST toward the equator, which is possibly due to a decrease of incoming solar radiation over the NH polar that results from the anti-phase counteraction between the precession and obliquity cycles. The summer (winter) Guliya and NH temperatures are higher (lower) in the warm phases of the August–September Guliya than in their cold phases. Moreover, in August–September, the Guliya SAT is closely related to the North Atlantic SST, in which the Guliya precipitation might act as a "bridge" linking the Guliya SAT and the North Atlantic SST.
