Oxidative Stress and Motion Sickness during Offshore Sailing

Purpose: Offshore Ocean Sailing is a highly demanding activity in which subjects are exposed to psychophysical stressors for a long time. To better define the physiological adaptations, we investigated the stress response of subjects exposed to 3-days long ocean navigation with disruption of circadian rhythms.Methods: 6 male subjects were involved in the study and provided urine and saliva samples before setting sail, during a single day of inshore sailing, during 3-days long ocean navigation, and at the arrival, to measure oxidative stress, cortisol, nitric oxide metabolites (NOx) and metabolic response. Motion Sickness questionnaires were also administered.Results: The crew suffered a mean weight loss of 1.58 Kg. After the long navigation, a significant increase in ROS production and decreased antioxidant capacity and uric acid levels were observed. Lipid peroxidation, NOx, ketones, creatinine, and neopterin levels were also increased. A significant increase in cortisol levels was recorded, but no correlation was found with motion sickness questionnaires that were instead correlated with the rise of NOx.Conclusions: physical and psychological stress response derived from offshore sailing resulted in increased oxidative stress, nitric oxide metabolites, and cortisol levels, unbalanced redox status, transient renal function impairment, and ketosis. A direct correlation between motion sickness symptoms evaluated through questionnaires and NOx levels was also found.

The Dream and the Reality of Blue Spaces: The Search for Freedom in Offshore Sailing

Escaping to sea by sailing boat conjures up images of idyllic anchorages and cocktails at sunset. In this paper, the authors reflected on the reality of extended voyaging to highlight how freedom and escape are relative and constantly negotiated. The authors utilize dialogue in the analysis of the data and draw on lived experience informed by immersion in the cruising community. The authors highlight how living at sea requires adherence to an “alternative” set of obligations to land-based life. They argue that blue spaces are important as a setting for a range of experiences that allow the exploration of what is possible and how one might live well. This paper contributes to the research on human–water relationships, that is, reshaping how we conceptualize blue space(s).

The traditionally established divisions of law are currently subject to modification occurring in line with the phenomenon of regulating more and more human activities. While the division between public and private law, as well as the catalog of legal branches is still quite stable, more specific areas of law are visible, indicated mostly according to their subject. Sailing law (also called boating law) is the case. The collectivity of norms regulating offshore sailing is most often referred to as maritime law (lex generalis), and it covers norms regulating sailing, i.e. sailing law (lex specialis). however, sailing is subject to very complex and heterogenous regulations. The article lists the most significant legal provisions in practice. more aspects of sailing can be included and specified as indicated in the article. each aspect mentioned above may require going beyond the legal system due to the general clause referring to the best maritime practices. This helps us to realize that sailing law can be divided into sets of theoretical aspects pertaining to the creation of the theory of sailing law. It all reflects the complexity and beauty of sailing law. It is not a branch of law. however, due to the subject of its applicability and the specificity of sailors, it is an area of law ensuring safety on the water. This precaution has the nature of a legal principle justifying and being the basis for most of the regulations applicable to maritime transport, therefore, also sailing.

A Proposal Of Simulation Model Of A Wind-Steering System For Sailing Yachts, Based On Single-Stage Servo-Pendulum Coupled With Main Rudder

The aim of this study was to investigate possible application of fast design prototyping methods for wind-steering systems used in offshore sailing yachts. The development of such methods would help to speed up the construction work and reduce the scope of necessary experimental research, prior to implementation of the system. In the present work, based on an analysis of existing designs of windvane systems, a preliminary selection of the system configuration has been undertaken, in terms of a compromise between efficiency, performance, and design complexity. Construction design of a single-stage, servo – pendulum system, has been developed by using the Autodesk Inventor design package. Next, based on the design data, a simulation model of the system, has been produced by using Matlab - Simulink software and SimMechanics library. The model was further verified in terms of kinematics mapping with the use of Matlab visualization tools.

Student Research Projects for the New Navy 44 Sail Training Craft

Offshore-capable sail training craft (STC) specifically designed and built for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) have been a cornerstone of its seamanship training program since 1939. Currently the fourth generation of these craft is under development and this paper summarizes research projects performed by eight midshipmen in the areas of parametric design criteria, structures, appendage development and analytical tool evaluation. While the results are oriented toward the new sail training craft, they are general enough to apply to any medium-sized offshore sailing vessel.

An Experimental Investigation of Slamming on Ocean Racing Yachts

Groupe Finot Naval Architects and the School of Engineering Sciences, Ship Science of the University of Southampton have started a joint research project to carry out an experimental investigation concerning the effects of slamming on offshore sailing yachts. A reliable autonomous data acquisition system was designed that allowed measurements to be taken during long offshore races. The details of the design and implementation of this system are presented together with some sample results from the first measurement campaigns.
