The Bombycoidea and Mimallonoidea (Lepidoptera) of a research station in the grasslands of Southern Brazil

We report the Bombycoidea and Mimallonoidea (Lepidoptera) observed at the the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul’s (UFRGS) Agronomic Research Station in Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil from September 7th to November 6th, 2018. This research station is situated in the Campos Sulinos (southern Brazilian grasslands) environment. As part of our inventory, we report the following Bombycoidea: 29 species of Sphingidae, 26 species of Saturniidae, at least seven species of Apatelodidae, and at least four species of Bombycidae. Within Mimallonidae we recorded eight species. New state records include the following Sphingidae: Xylophanes alineae, X. crenulata, and Perigonia stulta; and Mimallonidae: Mimallo grisea and the genus Menevia. Our study represents the first inventory of moths from this location and one of the few from the Campos Sulinos more broadly.

SISTEMAS AGROFLORESTAIS NO BIOMA CAMPOS SULINOS: UMA BREVE REVISÃO DE LITERATURA

Os sistemas agroflorestais podem ser uma alternativa para os problemas relacionados à agricultura e pecuária, aliando benefícios econômicos e sociais em prol da conservação dos biomas brasileiros. O objetivo do presente estudo é explorar as diferentes técnicas agroflorestais realizadas no bioma dos Campos Sulinos (Pampa), por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, a partir do sítio de pesquisa Google Scholar sem período de publicação pré-definido, delineando as principais metodologias e seus resultados e enfatizando o uso das espécies nativas para a recuperação do bioma. Os estudos apresentados na região sul do Brasil evidenciam uma série de benefícios nas áreas onde houve a implantação de sistemas agroflorestais, como um ganho significante nas propriedades biológicas do solo através do aumento da matéria orgânica, da ciclagem de nutrientes e cobertura do mesmo. Além disso, os sistemas agroflorestais proporcionaram novos meios de subsistência e lucro para os produtores, mostrando que o caminho da produção sustentável utilizando as espécies nativas do bioma é possível.

A ludicidade ambiental no jogo probio: dimensões educativas nos portfólios do bioma campos sulinos como potencialidades reflexivas para a educação ambiental

O Probio ou Jogo da Biodiversidade foi lançado em 2006 pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente, produto de um subprojeto que tinha como finalidade a elaboração de materiais educativos de educação ambiental sobre temas prioritários elencados pelo Projeto de Conservação e Utilização Sustentável da Biodiversidade Biológica Brasileira. O jogo contempla 45 pares de portfólios que retratam situações verídicas de conflito socioambiental em biomas brasileiros e as ações positivas realizadas para a resolução dos problemas exemplificados, levando em consideração a perspectiva dialógico-problematizadora. Em vista disso, o objetivo deste artigo é explorar a ludicidade ambiental como ramo reflexivo emergente do campo da educação ambiental, a fim de situar as dimensões educativas de conflito e ação presentes nos portfólios do bioma Campos Sulinos do jogo Probio. O trabalho é de natureza qualitativa e caráter exploratório, e utiliza a pesquisa documental para investigar os portfólios, os quais são aprofundados à luz da Análise de Conteúdo. A partir da análise, identificamos a emergência de cinco dimensões educativas presentes nos portfólios conflito e ação: econômica, política, social, cultural e ambiental. Essas dimensões revelam a natureza geradora dos conflitos e a compreensão sistêmica necessária para a resolução das situações-problema.

Valores, Estratégias de Pesquisa e Aplicação do Conhecimento: Os Campos Sulinos em Questão

Science is not value free. The philosopher Hugh Lacey developed a model of the interactions between values and scientific activity. The main objective of this paper is to present the model of Lacey and apply it to the context of the possibilities for productive use of Campos Sulinos, grasslands ecosystems of high biodiversity in southern Brazil, Uruguay and eastern part of Argentina, which are strongly threatened. The conversion of Campos Sulinos into large areas of agricultural and silvicultural monocultures is largely based on scientific knowledge acquired through decontextualizing strategies (ED). The conservation of Campos Sulinos is also informed by scientific knowledge, but primarily acquired through context-sensitive strategies (EC ). As the choice of strategy limits possible applications, the almost exclusive adoption of ED in modern science contradicts the ideal of neutrality of science. For enabling greater neutrality and comprehensiveness for the scientific activity, a plurality of strategies is necessary. Furthermore, when different strategies engage in conflict of values, decisions for the establishment of priorities and resource allocation need to be taken in democratic debates.

Diet and body shape among populations of Bryconamericus iheringii (Otophysi: Characidae) across the Campos Sulinos ecosystem

ABSTRACT Alterations in natural landscapes, mainly caused by anthropic pressures, have been threatening the world’s biomes, including aquatic environments and its biota. This study describes the diet of Bryconamericus iheringii, and how its body shape relates to environmental variables in populations of 22 streams. A wide array of food items were found, mainly composed of allochthonous plants (50.5%) and autochthonous invertebrates (25.2%). Even though food items remained almost the same, the predominant food group significantly differed among streams, mainly in relation to environmental characteristics. There was variation in body shape primarily associated with body depth and length of the pre-dorsal region; however, these differences did not correspond with streams. PLS-CA analyses indicated that environmental characteristics, such as substrate type, percentage of marginal vegetation have some influence over food items availability but not on body shape. This may be because B. iheringii is a non-specialist species capable of prey switching based on availability due to an intermediate body shape suited for generalist feeding habits.

Mudanças na cobertura do solo sobre os campos do sul do Brasil: modelagem dos impactos sobre os fluxos mudanças na cobertura do solo

In this work, we investigated the impacts of land cover changes on the surface energy balance, on the Campos Sulinos of Southern Brazilian. For this, we used the INLAND model to simulate the multiple processes that occur in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system, considering three experiments, called control (ctrl), agriculture (agr) and bare soil (bar). The results showed that the model was able to satisfactorily represent the surface energy flux considering the natural vegetation in the Pampa biome. The changes in the physiological parameters showed the great influence that the vegetation cover exerts on the components of the surface energy balance, especially in relation to the reduction of the net radiation (approximately 20% in the conversion 1 and 40% in the conversion 2), caused largely by the increase in surface albedo (around 10% in the conversion 1 and 17% in the conversion 2). Consequently, latent and sensitive heat fluxes also show a significant reduction.

Cytisus scoparius (Fam. Fabaceae) in southern Brazil - first step of an invasion process?

The occurrence of Scotch broom Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link (Fabaceae), is reported for the first time in Brazil. The species has been registered in the species-rich Campos Sulinos grasslands, in the Campos de Cima da Serra, and in the Serra do Sudeste. Naturalizing populations were frequently formed in natural habitats near to human settlements, where prevailing land uses and disturbances facilitate dispersal and establishment. The plant is an invasive species that has globally caused significant damage to biodiversity and economic losses. In Brazil, the species has a strong potential for spreading into a wide range of ecosystems. The Atlantic Forest biome and part of the Pampa biome, together known as the Campos Sulinos, represent optimal areas for the species. Features of the observed populations and recommendations for management are presented.

Relação entre as variáveis Geomorfométricas e a Vegetação Florestal na Bacia Hidrográfica do Arroio Caverá - Oeste do RS

A vegetação na região oeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul apresenta como principal característica fisionômica a predominância da formação campestre com relação à vegetação florestal, porém alguns autores esclarecem que os campos sulinos devem ser interpretados como “formações relictuais” em relação às florestas no atual clima ombrófilo. O “avanço” da vegetação florestal sobre a original predominância campestre no oeste do Estado pode ser associado também às variações topográficas do terreno e à dinâmica da água no solo. Entretanto, são raros os estudos detalhados que fazem a relação entre estes elementos da paisagem, com a utilização de informações espacializadas. Este trabalho busca demonstrar a relação existente entre a distribuição das tipologias de vegetação florestal e as formas componentes das encostas na bacia hidrográfica do arroio Caverá (BHAC), utilizando para tal, variáveis geomorfométricas extraídas de dados SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) e mapa de vegetação gerado através do SIG ArcGIS 10.1 (ESRI, 2013), com o uso de imagens Landsat 8 Sensor OLI (Operational Land Imager). A partir dos parâmetros altitude, declividade, perfil e plano de curvatura, foram identificadas e descritas 12 unidades geomorfométricas para a bacia. A vegetação florestal na BHAC apresenta-se em duas tipologias: matas ciliares e capões-de-mato/ matas de encosta.
