AbstractThe chiropractic profession is 125 years old and has evolved a culture beset with internal conflict. The internal ructions have been particularly noticeable during the last 20 years. The recent resignation of the entire World Federation of Chiropractic Research Committee has again focussed the conflicting views and goals of the “wellness” and “evidence” factions within the profession. These polarising viewpoints are worsening to the degree that there are calls for the profession to break into two separate entities. Key to the recognition of the differences within the profession is the recognition of title for particular sub populations of patients presenting to chiropractors. For many of the sub populations such as sport or paediatrics there has grown appropriate post professional specialist educational training sometimes leading to a protected title. However, this is not occurring in that group of practitioners that choose to focus on wellness care. A recommendation is made that wellness chiropractic be viewed as a post professional specialty program within chiropractic, as it is in medicine and elsewhere, and that recognition follow after appropriate post professional educational programs have been completed, as is customary in the other special interest groups. In order to do so, consensus will be required from all stakeholders within the profession on the level, scope and depth of such programs. Furthermore, it is possible that different jurisdictions around the world may require different post graduate educational levels based on local competitive, legal and professional circumstances. In such cases, transitioning to the higher level over a period of time may be undertaken. Recognition of the wellness specialty by the profession would allow for vertical integration with other healthcare providers as well as help bridge a gap between the entrepreneur and academic groups that would be responsible for creating these programs at tertiary education institutions. Finally, should these programs acquire evidence to underpin them, a process that would be taught within the programs, it is likely that recognition of an extended scope of practice would occur increasing the appeal of chiropractic to the public.

Concern about the risks of radiation and the quality of the radiographic image has led many researchers and public agencies to carry out studies on the subject, which have found the existence of a series of problems in the practice of dental radiology. Based on the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of dental surgeons regarding biosafety and the use of devices and materials used throughout the radiographic process in dental offices. 200 Dentists were interviewed with offices in some cities in the Baixada Santista region in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, variables such as age, gender, time since graduation, professional specialty, were only identified at the time of the interview. During the visit, the researcher assessed, by means of a questionnaire, components related to the radiological practice in the offices and about the attitudes during the radiological practice and, consequently, about the radiological protection rules adopted, either for the patients or professionals involved. When the questionnaire was applied, a statistically significant difference was observed in relation to the concept of biosafety 98% of the interviewees answered yes, that they know what biosafety is. If there are notices in the office warning about the x-ray equipment, 89% responded that they do not. The viewing of radiographs taken previously by the patients was indicated by 97.5% of the interviewed dentists, and 95% use breast and thyroid protection with a lead apron. More than half of the dentists, 52%, discard the substances used in the revelation process in the office sink. The results observed in our study are not encouraging, either due to the ignorance of the current legislation, the use of the devices inappropriately and the processing carried out with real chances of contamination of the environment, we believe that an increase in teaching and control of biosafety in dental radiology is necessary.

The article discusses the pedagogical understanding of the concept of profession as extremely important for the pedagogical community in the conditions of the modern state of education. The authors believe that the current situation in pedagogy is characterized by the confusion of the concepts profession, specialty, qualification, position, imprecise identification of subjects of education (teacher, educator, tutor, pedagogical worker, etc.), which makes it difficult to develop professional and educational standards, ensure their continuity, define labor actions and competencies clearly. For this reason, it would seem, a private matter acquires social, theoretical and practical significance. The logic and content of the article determine the authors’ position in the consideration of the stated topic – they believe that analyzing the specifics of the teaching profession and related concepts requires taking into account the achievements and recommendations of sociology and psychology of professions, studying the possibilities of the pedagogical professiology. Consideration of the problem only from within the pedagogy itself limits the possibilities of disciplinary analysis, the activity of scientific reflection, the creation of holistic ideas on the teaching profession as a significant humanitarian activity in society, which initially carries humanitarianism as a leading quality. The authors critically consider the Professional standard of a teacher, in which they find contradictory positions, and come to a conclusion about the need for the clear scientific and pedagogical understanding of the concepts of profession, professionalism, professional, specialty, qualification, activity, labor functions, competencies.

The critical and polemic receptions of the work of Loïc Wacquant has been extensive, but to a large extent focused on specific works and colored by professional specialty, that is, in a word: fragmented. In counteracting that fragmented response, the article sheds light on the undercurrents in Wacquant’s works by stressing four prominent and consistent features: his heritage from (and updating of) Bourdieu; his emphasis on and constant practice of theory (implicit as well as explicit); the distinct ethos with which he addresses political sociology (in the dual form of a sociology analyzing the effects of the political productions of populations categories and a so-called ‘civic sociology’); and finally, the persistent and ubiquitous critique of everything in existence – a thematic indicator permeating each and every one of his works. Thus the article proposes a unifying reading of Wacquant as an interpretation advocating revitalization of a critical social science.

The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a difference in the perception of aesthetics, by dental specialty, using computer assisted asymmetric alteration of the papilla length in the aesthetic zone with an apical alteration of the contact point of the clinical crowns. Standardized photographs were presented to sixty-five randomly selected dentists from New York University College of Dentistry on a computer screen for evaluation. Then, the dental professionals were asked to rate the smile in each picture. Control and experiment photographs were used. Data was analyzed using the statistical package SPSS version 21 and one-way ANOVA. The perception of esthetics depends on the dental professional specialty; results provide evidence that asymmetric deficiency in papilla length of 2 mm or more is perceived as “unattractive” by the dental specialists.
